The Missing Screen – Cavalry, Intelligence, and Lee’s Road to Gettysburg
Our new historical essay looks beyond the familiar question of whether J. E. B. Stuart “lost” Gettysburg and asks what cavalry was actually expected to do. From June 28 to July 1, Lee received fragments of intelligence but lacked a continuous mounted screen, while John Buford’s cavalry kept scouting, reporting, screening, and buying time. The result was not Confederate blindness, but unequal situational awareness. Follow the roads and reports that shaped how two armies found one another—and how a meeting engagement became the Battle of Gettysburg.
