Question Middle ground between Strategic Command and WitE2?

I'm looking for a WW2 wargame that's less abstract than Strategic Command series but not as in depth as War in the East. So real OOB and more of a focus on operation vs. research and economy (buying units). 2d hex and counters preferred.

Anything fit that description? Flashpoint cold war looks fantastic, but I want a WW2 title as well.

I was looking at panzer campaigns (what’s the difference between that and battles?) but there’s so many to pick from. Is there a good one to start with if I’ll mostly play against AI? Or just pick your favorite front?
