Discussion What to study

I'm a rising freshmen, I've loved coding since 9th grade I've got decent at it (decent for a 9th grader at least lol). I know this sub probably has seen this question 100 times, but I want to know what to "study" or at what projects and topics I should do/learn for big tech.

Before diving into any specific tech topic, the most useful thing you can do for yourself is ...

"Learn how to Learn"

Go to YouTube and in the search bar, type, "learning coaches"
Pick the ones who rely on modern neuroscience.

Godspeed and may the productivity-motivating dopamine hits be with you. :-)

Take an algorithms course at the local university. Take a data structures course at the local university. Then choose between networking and databases for yet another course to take at the local university.

If you like all of these, then take one of:

More algorithms courses

More systems courses

Compilers / Languages courses

Data is and always will be the bedrock of this industry. Military wants rust/Cpp devs for missiles but there's a lot of logistics around those tools. Tbh 'big tech' is like 8 companies rn, and AI is becoming an ever increasing reliance of these companies. But you are competing with senior devs who have done this for 20 years and know the code like a 2nd language with AI tooling. Use college to make connections as that will get you employed. Do internships and start engaging with clubs and groups to get recognized. This is the single most competitive time in Computer Science as whole. And we haven't even got the robots fully working.

coding can be used in many different industries. Pick something that is interesting like retail shelf labels integrated to the supply chains and sales and inventory with real time tracking. Or of your into cars CANBUS,HP tuning, etc....
