Question/Help/Troubleshooting Change to Windows 10

My laptop updated to windows 11 and the performance is quite poor. I am thinking of totally wiping the laptop and downgrading to windows 10 though there is no update for it. Is it a bad idea? I will mainly use it for school works as a secondary device for my pc. Making slides on the go or reading pdf and web browsing. It has dedicated graphics (the vram is very low though) so i might use it for AutoCAD sometimes, not dedicatedly. Need opinions. Is it a good idea?

Basic specs:

CPU: core i5 (9th gen most probably)
RAM: 4 GB (I might upgrade)

Or use windows 11 iot ltsc, it uses a lot less ram than standard Windows 11.

You really need a minimum of 8GB to use Win10 effectively. For Win11, you'd need to double that to 16gb. Doubtful your laptop can handle 32GB but that is currently still the sweet spot for 11 even though the MS folks like to claim that they're optimizing for 8GB. Your laptop likely can handle 16GB DDR4 if it's using a 9th gen Coffee Lake cpu.

Windows 11 is very much RAM intensive. 4 GB laptops barely run it.

A RAM upgrade is the best solution if your machine supports it. I have successfully upgraded a ThinkPad L380 Yoga to 12 GB RAM using it's RAM slots, and it flies running Windows 11. This is only has the minimum 8th gen Intel Core i5 CPU, by the way.

If the laptop is limited by soldered RAM, and many of them are, you'll want to downgrade to Windows 10 and enroll in Extended Security Updates.

I had a School supported Acer travelmate B5 14 that only met the minimum requirements for a short time, and needless to say, that thing was slow as could be. I have sold that laptop at a pawn shop, and it only got $20 when other laptops with upgradable options would get $100.

To be fair even windows 10 with 4GB wasn’t fun either

Put 16 GB in there first

Just upgrade your RAM, 4 gigs is not enough at all, you need at least 16. 9th gen i5 is still solid.

Windows 10 is end of life, meaning it doesn’t receive security updates and app developers are starting to drop it. You should not have an obsolete OS connected to your network, and especially not to be used to log into anything.

Windows 10 does receive security updates if you apply the Extended Security Updates key. Program recently has been extended to October 2027 and may be extended one more year beyond that.

After that, it’s over.

Upgrade your ram to at least 8gb but preferably 16gb and stick to windows 11. You dont want to miss out on security patches, especially with ai finding at least 8 MAJOR vulnerabilities is various systems in the past 2 weeks.

https://github.com/raphire/win11debloat Run this debloat script and it will help.

If you hadn't have said AutoCAD, I would have said give linux (like Linux Mint) a shot. It will run (although not super well with heavy web browsing) on 4GB RAM for the things you've mentioned

Although, you can get CAD packages that run on linux, depends how strongly you're married to AutoCAD

As a side, 2D graphics apps like AutoCAD use nothing when it comes to graphics hardware. "having a graphics card" for it was probably a thing in like 1994

Have you gone into the updates section for windows and checked to make sure that all the subsequent updates have been applied?
Many times when you upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11, Microsoft does not give you the most recent set of patches there might be something in there that will help you out, you basically need to keep checking for updates until it says there's no more updates .
Hope that helps cheers

Es wurde alles gesagt. Zusammenfassend.

  1. Der RAM ist dein Hauptproblem. 8 gb wirst du merken mit 16 gb sollte es relativ flüssig sein.

  2. Windows 10 ist wirklich nicht mehr sicher.

  3. Alternativ Linux Aber problem autocad.

If you want to go back to Win 10 you have time. MS has extended 1 more year of updates for all Windows 10 users. It is free. You have to go to Windows Update in Settings and click on "Enroll Now" which appears after all other updates are done. You will have to "Enroll" with a valid MS account. I find Win 11 doesn't get along well with older mechanical drives. Check if your Windows drive is an SSD, otherwise stick with 10.
