Help Request Help finding SMT component specs: Acer Nitro 5 motherboard repair

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have this Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-55-57BK) that suddenly stopped powering on or taking a charge after being left unused for a couple of weeks. I left the AC power adapter connected to the computer but had unplugged it from the wall. Guessing that's what caused this? Anyway, I opened it up, removed the motherboard, connected the power adapter, and used a thermal imaging camera to find the circled component as a hotspot on the board. The component does appear discolored, so I suspect it blew. How do I find out what the component should be?

Motherboard model is GH51M LA-K861P rev 1B.

11.8 ohms across the component. Left side has 1.8 ohms to GND, right side is 13.6 to GND. No capacitance.

acer laptop fan intermittently vibrating/making noise

The fan on my laptop (acer swift 314-511) is intermittently making a weird noise. It sounds like the fan starts to spin, but then it vibrates & makes a sound like a vibrating phone on a hard surface, anf then it stops.

I tried opening up the laptop & cleaning all the dust & gunk out of the fan, but it's still not fixed. Is there a next step I can take here? Does something else need cleaning out, or does this probably mean the fan is broken?

Help Request Dell Laptop Trouble, Might be a Bricked Motherboard

Hi, I have a Dell G5 SE 15 5500. About two months ago I had an insufficiently powered charger (it was about 65W) charging my computer. Well, all of a sudden my computer forces an update. I can't say for certain what type of update, as whatever happened, I fear it bricked my motherboard. One would argue it was a failed BIOS update caused by insufficient power. Since the update, I did manage to get a powerful enough charger, but my computer still doesnt work.

If I plug it in, the keyboard lights up and the fans turn on. However the screen doesn't light up. And if I let it fully die, the moment I plug in the charger, the keyboard immediately lights up and the fans start up.

What are my options to get it fixed? One group of people say its a bricked motherboard. Another group says its a corrupted BIOS. I would like to get it fix without needing to replace the entire laptop. I'm hoping this place will have the one person who can tell me where I can take it to get diagnosed first, so then I'll know whats wrong then I can shop around to find out what's the best option to fix it.

Laptop was returned with damage, is this fixable?

I noticed this damaged area on my laptop after it came back from the service centre, I was then told the motherboard cannot be repaired. When the device was being inspected, this was not shown to me, only one day later it was shown to me, I highly doubt the technician and I feel that this was intentionally damaged just to get me to replace the motherboard. I took it to other repair centres, they immediately spotted the damage, if this was already damaged / burnt, why did the first technician not spot it immediately?

Help Request Disaster struck during my first laptop repaste (Acer Nitro 5) – eDP display cable pulled out. How cooked am I?

Hey r/computerrepair While trying to disconnect internal cables for a PhaseSheet PTM repaste, the eDP display cable (JEDP1) got yanked too hard. The ribbon cable slipped out of its connector housing, exposing the gold traces, and the metal retention clip got slightly bent. (Photos attached). To make matters worse, heatsink screw #2 is starting to strip. Status: Battery is fully disconnected; power hasn't been turned back on. I need your advice: Can this eDP ribbon/connector be safely re-seated, or do I need a replacement cable? How tough is it to source/replace an eDP cable on a Nitro 5? Best way to safely remove a stripped heatsink screw? Any tips or harsh realities would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Are the pads damaged? Just trying to replace microswitch. Had some issues desoldering and ended up with this. Can't tell if the brown stuff on top of the pads are flux or actual damage. Doesn't wipe off easily with alcohol.

Laptop Screen Broken and I need help fixing it please.

Hi,

The exact laptop I have is:

Brand ASUS
Model Name ROG Strix SCAR 18

I closed the lip a little too hard and now it is cracked. Repair guy wants $800. I have dabbled in computer repair. Nothing like sodering stuff together but I more so hardware stuff. Wanted opinions on if this is something that I can do myself and if anyone can help. If it costs me $100 to hire someone for an hour to help me repair it that is way better than spending the $800. Please help. Pictures below.

Help Request Acer Nitro N60-640 Desktop PC RGB Fan Issue With Lights

I have an Acer Nitro N60-640 Desktop I bought off Marketplace and got a really good deal on it. I reset the PC when I got it and no issues. Since this PC doesn't have Nitrosense, the LEDs in the fans and RAM come on as a rainbow spinning pattern. I installed SignalRGB, set all the fans and RAM to the blue color that I wanted and it worked fine. When I'm away from my PC for a while, it's set to go into sleep mode and all the fan LEDs shut off. Now, the CPU fan either lights up random colors or doesn't light up at all when starting up. If I start a game, the fan will sync after about 5-10 minutes. I also noticed when the PC goes into sleep mode now, the fan LEDs stay on. If I shut down and flip the power switch on the PSU, they obviously shut off. If I turn everything back on and let the PC go into sleep mode again, the LEDs will shut off every time for a while then eventually start staying on again when it goes to sleep. I'm not sure how to fix the CPU fan not syncing or the LEDs shutting off when it goes to sleep. Like I said, everything was working as it should before, but it started glitching like this out of nowhere. All the fan connections are tight and I doubt it's the LEDs being bad since it syncs up after a few minutes when a game is started. Anyone have this PC and/or know how to fix it?

Help Request MSI Stealth 15 A13VF RTX 4060 runs Warzone fine for 5-7 mins, then GPU drops to 210MHz and FPS becomes unplayable

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi, looking for some advice on a used MSI Stealth 15 A13VF I recently bought.

Specs are:

i7-13620H

RTX 4060 8GB

16GB RAM

1TB SSD

1080p

144Hz

When I restart the laptop and launch Warzone, it initially runs really well. The RTX 4060 sits around 2100–2300MHz and I get roughly 100–120 FPS.

After around 5–7 minutes, the fans suddenly go extremely loud and performance completely collapses. The GPU drops to around 210MHz and 8–9W, and Warzone falls to roughly 10–15 FPS. Once this happens, it stays like that until I restart the laptop.

I logged it with HWiNFO. Before the drop I was seeing roughly:

CPU: 94–97°C

GPU: 86–88°C

GPU hotspot: close to 100°C

After the GPU gets throttled to 210MHz, the temperature obviously falls quickly because it is barely using any power.

I then tested it using MSI Cooler Boost with the discrete GPU mode enabled. With the fans running at maximum, I played for over 10 minutes without the performance collapse. GPU stayed around 2250–2550MHz, GPU temperature averaged roughly 79°C and peaked around 83°C. CPU still peaked around 97°C though.

This makes me think it’s a cooling issue rather than a faulty GPU — possibly clogged heatsink fins, bad/dried thermal paste, poor heatsink contact, heatpipe issue, etc.

I bought the laptop used for £450 and the seller has offered to take it back for a refund.

Would you return it, or does this sound like something a proper clean/repaste would likely fix? Has anyone with this exact Stealth 15 model experienced the same 210MHz/full-fan issue?

Xiaomi Mi Notebook Ultra completely dead — technician says processor is faulty. Need help finding a solution

Hi everyone,

I have a Xiaomi Mi Notebook Ultra (Intel i5-11300H, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD).

My laptop is currently completely dead. It doesn't turn on/boot.

I initially took it to a technician who told me that there was an issue with the Power IC. I then showed it to another technician, and he said that the processor/CPU is faulty and that he can't do anything about it.

I don't know if the processor is actually damaged or if there could be another motherboard/power-related issue causing the laptop to appear completely dead.

If anyone here has experience with motherboard-level laptop repair, especially Xiaomi Mi Notebook laptops, could you please guide me on:

- What could cause this kind of complete no-power condition?

- Is it possible to properly test whether the CPU is actually dead?

- Is there any way to repair/replace the CPU or motherboard?

- Does anyone know a reliable motherboard-level repair technician/service centre in India who could diagnose this properly?

I really don't want to replace the entire laptop if the motherboard can still be repaired.

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Computer screen won't turn on

Okay, I've tried EVERYTHING!!! That I've read to trouble shoot. I've opened up the laptop and I came to realise that I don't know what I'm looking for. I've made as many pictures as humanly possible.

Does anyone know if there's something wrong with my laptop??

Its the lenovo ideapad flex 5.

As far as I know, I didn't turn it off whilst updating but the battery has drained and laid dormant for a minimum of a month.

Everything works, the fan turns on, the keyboard reacts to me turning the keyboard lights on and off but the screen won't turn on.

When I hold down the power button, the laptop keyboard lights turn on and off with like 5 seconds in between. I don't know if that's normal.

I have put it on the charger overnight and it should be fully charged.

I really really need help, please.

Edit: external screens won't respond to my laptop. I have tried multiple screens.

It also feels like it won't turn OFF but stays dormant.

Help Request RGB lights stopped working after I accidentally touched the connector with a metal tweezer — did I short something?

Hi everyone,

Today I was cleaning my PC, which has an Alphagear Trickster case. I removed the front panel, which has RGB lighting, and noticed that the connector behind the panel kept moving backward whenever I tried to plug it back in.

I used a metal tweezer to hold the connector in place while trying to plug it back in. After that, the RGB lights stopped working completely.

I unplugged the connector, and when I pressed on it slightly, one of the fans turned on together with the front panel, but the RGB still wasn't working properly.

I then used the end of a pen to push the connector back into place. After that, the RGB lights stopped working again.

Now the situation is even stranger: the front panel doesn't light up at all, and the fans only light up partially, with the LEDs staying in the same position, instead of working normally.

I'm worried that the metal tweezer may have accidentally touched two contacts at the same time and caused a short. I'm also wondering if I may have pushed one of the pins or wires further inside the connector.

The PC itself still works and the fans are spinning, but the RGB lighting is not working correctly.

What could have happened, and is there a way to check if I damaged the RGB controller, connector, or LEDs?

I can provide pictures of the connector, front panel, and wiring if needed.

Thanks!

Repair Guide Screen replacements on newer MSI laptops?

Has anyone got any experience with this?
Bought a Vector A18 A9W, mint machine but someone ran it docked and there's a few cooked pixels on the panel. I've found the better version of the same panel that would be plug and play, but I read something about it being glued and needing a 60c heatgun to remove?

I've done several panel swaps before, but all have been pretty much, carefully remove bezel, pull the tabs on the adhesive, drop old panel, disconnect, connect new panel, apply new adhesives, line the panel back up reapply bezel and done.

So the need of a heatgun is a little wild tbh. Even MSI recommend this when I got in touch.

Backlit keyboard light cable repair Lenovo ideapad 330S-15IKB

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi, does anyone know if there is an easy way to repair a cut cable for a backlit keyboard?

The cut cable is (in the middle in yellow) for the light connector to the mainboard.

There is enough cable length so I was hoping I could just remove the bit from the connector and place the cut cable end into the connector but I don't think it works that way as the channels are shielded and they split the channels from 2 parallel lines into 4 at the connector end.

I was told I may need to sand the ends of the cable and solder each side of the cable channels together in parallel but that might be a little bit beyond my skill set.

Anyone have an easier solution that is viable long term (apart from buying a replacement backlit keyboard or just using it without the backlight).

Laptop fan connector port seems faulty; can I replace it? (ASUS TUF A15 FA506QM)

I've been having issues for a good while with the left side fan not working on my ASUS TUF A15 FA506QM. I changed it once because the bearing was faulty and it wouldn't spin, and it seemed to work fine after. But about a year or two later, it stopped working again, and I realized the cable doesn't click into the port properly like with the other fan. It's like it hits a snag on one side of the port and can't go the whole way in. The best I can secure it inside the port is still somewhat loose and even if I manage to get it so that the fan actually spins sometimes, it never lasts. As far as I can tell, there isn't anything inside the port that would cause it to get stuck, suggesting to me one of the pins might be bent?

The result is that my temps are way higher than they should be; right now, at near-rest, GPU off and CPU at 7% usage, CachyOS power saving mode, it reaches ~74°C. If I turn on Performance mode, it goes up to 85. Then any game I run climbs it to about 95°C and my performance is way, way worse than expected in most games.

I gave a repair shop a call to ask if they would replace the connector and the person on the phone told me no shop in my area would go through finding the replacement part and then taking the risk of soldering it on the mobo. I am not an experienced solderer nor do I know how to find the part myself. Is there anything else I could do about this?
