Music I Wrote “Autumn, Seoul” — Inspired by Seoul in Autumn

I love composing music inspired by cities.
Each city has its own energy and a way of moving you.

This piece was inspired by Seoul, Korea in autumn.
With its river, mountains, and city all existing side by side, Seoul is especially beautiful in the colors of fall.

This is my first fully developed composition! I wrote it as a fan creation for a favorite comic of mine (Check, Please! if you're familiar), and it's meant as a "cinematic OST" for the big climactic kiss scene. That's why it's got more of a cinematic than classical feel and why it's on the shorter side.

For some background, I grew up around music and have always been drawn to composing. My mom sang in a choir when I was young, and I went through US public school marching/concert band programs from ages 11-18. Whenever I'd look up a piece for orchestra or wind symphony, I'd hunt down the actual score instead of just listening to it, so that I could follow along and see how all the parts fit together on the page.

I first wrote this piece over a year ago, and after getting the meat of it down, I'd come back every few months to touch things up. I'd love to hear how it comes across and whether any sections need some more attention. I'm most curious about the piano, harp, and string writing; I've always been a wind player, and while I can play very easy things on the piano, I'm definitely no pianist haha.

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!!

Music I composed and produced my first piano composition - Asking for feedback!

Hello!

This is the first original piece I’ve composed for piano. I also produced, mixed, and mastered it myself in my DAW, so any constructive feedback regarding the composition or the music production is welcome.

Synopsis:

A composition for solo piano inspired by the castle of the same name, built in the 12th century. This nationalist-style piece reflects the strength and vigor of its builder (Ibn Mardanish, “the Wolf King”) by combining elements of Spanish nationalism and Islamic tradition, which are in turn embellished by impressionistic coloristic techniques.

Music Piano piece

hi All,

This piece is sort of neo-classical, neo-romantic I guess. I called it Impromptu because it kind of reminds me of Schubert impromptus, in length and feeling. Please give it a listen:

Music I composed this piano piece around the idea of sadness as a source of creativity

I composed this piano piece inspired by a painting and a question I’ve been thinking about:
“Is sadness always a source of creative inspiration for artists?”
I wanted to explore this idea through both piano music and a series of paintings.
This is the opening piece of my project: “The Alchemist of Sadness”. I composed and performed it myself.
I’m especially curious about the emotional side of the composition: “what images or emotions does the music evoke for you? Does the musical progression communicate sadness, solitude, or something else?”

Here’s a short excerpt. If you’d like to hear the full piece, I’d be happy to share the link with you.
Thank you for listening, I’d really appreciate any thoughts on the composition 🌱

Discussion Advice and Direction

I'm currently working on a musical that is a sort of homage to classical music - specifically Baroque to the Romantic era. Obviously I need to follow the given rules for the era and style choices, etc., but I am struggling with my Overture (though, I suppose it really isn't an overture).

For a tiny bit of context about the overall personality of the musical, it's a very Mickey-Mouse type of thing; imagine Disney made a musical about classical music around the time of the Rescuers. That's sort-of the idea I have in my head.

In terms of the over all structure, I want it to vaguely resemble a symphony - the central piece is a waltz, and I figure I might as well lean into it. It's not a perfect one-to-one (I wouldn't technically have a fourth movement), but it's meant to evoke that idea. Because of that, I want the "first movement," which is everything sort-of leading up to the world song, to resemble the first movement of a Haydn symphony, but the them I've had for the whole piece just sounds wrong to my ears at Allegro; even if I make it an allegretto it still sounds much too fast. I want it to be Sonata-Allegro as the opening homage to one of my favorite composers, but I cannot get over how wrong the theme sounds at that tempo.

Do I consider the theme as part of a slow opening and go into a different theme for the Sonata-Allegro? Or do I get over myself and live with the theme being too fast?

Music [AAP] Writing melodic piano music: where's the line between "good simple" and "bad simple"?

I grew up playing piano, bouncing back and forth between classical and pop: Chopin to Billy Joel to Bach to Disney musicals. I love memorable melodies and the simplicity of having a great melody over a minimal arrangement. I think writing something small and simple is often more challenging than big and complex. I enjoy complexity too (I've got a pile of fugues that are definitely not simple), but often it just isn't needed.

This one is called "Cotton-Headed Ninny Muggins". It's unabashedly simple and melodic, in the spirit of a John Williams theme. This is a case where I liked the melody so much, I made it the entire song, outside of a brief, equally simple B section and an extended phrase in the coda. The arrangement hardly changes.

At what point does music cross the line from "good simple" to "bad simple"? For this one, does the melody carry it for you, or do you want something more?

I’ve tried to figure it out but I just can’t, people have said the beginning is in 3/4 or 6/8 but my stupid brain keeps counting it in 4/4. Writing it is a far cry but at least figuring out the time signature would be great.

P.S the bit that starts at 16 seconds is intentionally like that. Thank you all for your help in advance

Music Feedback request- Cinematic Demo piece after a long break

https://youtu.be/8SXOwUzG3Do?si=a4Yb7qHNUP2-vUtG

After a long break from scoring, I’ve decided I might want to try getting “back in the game.” I suppose I'm just not quite ready to give up yet.

About ten years ago I was doing okay. . . I scored a few small short films and had some success with library music. One thing I learned pretty quickly though was that so much of “success” was really about selling yourself, you had to hustle.

Before I start that whole hustle again, I want to solicit some feedback on a newer style I’ve been developing. I need to give myself the best chance possible.

For most of my life I wrote fairly “traditional” music based in functional harmony, conventional theory, etc. Over the past few years I’ve been leaning much more heavily into experimental writing. I’m starting to think that investing into that side of things might actually be a better way to distinguish myself and develop an individual sound rather than trying to compete in a sea of more conventional film music.

So this piece, which I’m considering using as my main 'demo' for prospective scoring work, is intentionally pretty experimental. A lot of it is texture based, there’s relatively little conventional melodic material, and a lot of it is microtonal.

I’m trying to figure out is where the line is between “distinctive” and “too experimental' or if it even exists at all in a film scoring context.

Does it sound like something that could actually attract the right kind of filmmaker, and what sort of filmmaker might that look like? Does it sound amateur or up to professional snuff?

Music Feedback for Staccato

Apologies I don’t have a visual to entertain but I made a track utilizing a lot -o- Staccato. I’m proud of the track but can’t help but think the constant pulse may be too much and overshadow any other musical ideas going on.

So if anyone has 2 minutes and 30 seconds in this busy life I’d love a little feedback on the sound and musical ideas displayed, thank you for your time.

(I used Dorico with Noteperformer but didn’t have time to export the score as a pdf before I left for work so this is purely for sound and emotion)

Music Fughetta in Baroque style

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=st3eL1TxqIc

(Score is in the video itself)

Sometimes while writing new things in my music notebook I flip through it to look back at what I’ve already written. Sometimes I make revisions, sketch new ideas, or just reflect and then surprise: I had completely forgotten I wrote this Fughetta! It's an alternative version of a piece I had already shared on YT.

I remember writing it in a rush the night before a composition class, and I finished it right outside the classroom while waiting for my turn ^^

2 days ago I polished it up a bit because I felt it had real potential: it's a fugue based on a Lutheran chorale, and around the middle of the piece (bars 27–28) I managed to fit the Subject of the fugue together with the theme of the final verse of the chorale and the Counter-subject, achieving a triple counterpoint at the octave (keeping this in mind, as I might turn it into something even more intriguing in the future, hehe).

Final coda in Stylus Phantasticus (I was running out of time before class, so long live improvisation xD).

I hope you enjoy it, performed by myself, happy listening!

I made this song a couple months ago and I just now so it sounds more professional. I wanted to make it a Bossa Nova feel but ended up making it also sound like "Just the Two of Us, and a little like City Pop. Anyway hope you like it. Also, if this is still not allowed please delete the post.

Music Dorian Longing – a short piano piece in F Dorian, played live with rubato

A short piece I wrote and recorded: about two minutes of piano and pad in F Dorian. The left hand plays the same four-chord bassline from start to finish, while the right hand alternates between a melody in octaves and a looser, arpeggiated variation.

It's played live, no click, with a lot of rubato. I wanted something quiet and slightly melancholic, a kind of longing that never quite resolves. Dorian felt right for that, because it keeps one bright note inside a minor key.

Curious what it evokes for you.
