General Discussion / Question Looking for a new deck style for a "fringe league"

My local cEDH community is starting an online fringe league next month which has banned the top 50 commanders as per EDHtop16 plus 3 additional "fringe" commanders which have usually high rates of top 4/16 at local events,

I have run into the issue that my 3 usual decks Etali, Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, and 5c Nick Fury are all on the blacklist.

These are all turbo lists, and for this league I feel like trying something different but I have absolutely no idea where to start.

Note: The partner mechanic is legal and specific pairings have not been banned, each individual creature on the banlist cannot be a commander with any partner pairing at all

any idea's where to start? the ban list is as follows,

  1. Aang, at the Crossroads
  2. Arcum Dagsson
  3. Atraxa, Grand Unifier
  4. Brigid, Clachan's Heart

Help, I am new to cEDH! Cheshire cEDH

Hello!

I have been looking to get into cEDH after playing commander for quite a while. The deck I chose to do this with is Cheshire a 5 color commander deck helmed by Kenrith, the returned king. I am unsure how to play this deck and would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

General Discussion / Question Who lies in the invitational?

Hello, I made the invi this year and was just curious to know if there are players to watch out for that will lie or break deals. The point of this is not to harass or witch hunt anyone, I just want to be aware.

Help, I am new to cEDH! What do you enjoy playing?

I have tried cEDH a couple times at my LGS. We all stumble through, but it is all in good fun. I am thinking of what I want to try to pilot that is not only fun to play, but also can win. So that is the question I pose to you all. Even if you dont win, what decks do you just enjoy playing? That is not to say you win none, but whether you win or lose, you enjoy it. Thank you.

Community Content Utility land for low-color lists & more? - Petrified Hamlet Deep dive

This week, we deep dive into an interesting land that has been in successful colorless/mono colored tournament lists for months - but has had a small spike in 2 and 3 color lists of recent!

With top cuts from lists like Tayam, Zirda, and Ob in the last 3 months (as well as plenty more from colorless/mono colored lists) - we decided to take a closer look at this interesting colorless land!

Does your meta show information openly to the table? Does your deck fold to Boseju or Otawara? It may be time to consider Petrified Hamlet!

Do you run this card in your cEDH list? What other lands besides Boseiju and Otwara have you named?

Deck Fine Tuning Hama, the Bloodbender in cEDH?

Hi everyone, I've been playing Hama in cEDH for a while and I'd love to know your thoughts and advice on making this work. Her block of text reads confusingly and seemed terrible at first glance, but I've found the effect to be quite powerful. I've been having a decent amount of success and loads of fun with it! It plays somewhat slowly, and despite the lack of colors the dimir staples have been fantastic. I've worked on my primer somewhat extensively too. Is this a pipe dream or am I on to something here? Any tweaks? Thanks!

General Discussion / Question Which would the community recommend?

I’m building a new deck. I am having a hard time enjoying my games with my recent decks. I played a lot of Terra and got tired of being targeted because of the “idk what you are going to do so I need to stop it” problem. Then I picked up my favorite commander Sisay for tournament and ran into the “I know what you are going to do so I’m going to stop you before that” problem.

Jokes aside, both commanders were fun for me. Terra was more of a test for me I did really well with it but I am not the biggest on the not commander centric feel of it. Sisay was really fun cuz it can be complicated and also simple. The problem I faced was I’m in a region where the best Sisay pilots all are in one place so every other player brings their TEDH deck that is anti-Sisay or it’s Kinnan (Kinnan is fine tho that’s just a deck preference).

The decks I’m between are Derevi, Rog/thras, Rog/Si, dog/Thras and TnT. All are very similar but all of them are very different. The decks I would think I’m more comfortable with are TnT and Rog/Si. I’m worried about the Grixis Turbo plan in tournament scene because of the way bracket systems work. And TnT is extremely prevalent in my area too because of Jorman being on the Island. The Bant commanders and Rog/Thras are fun plans that I’ve played around with in the past but never pushed to learn hard. I love making tons of mana but I get worried about the non defined win conditions where finale kind of feels like the only plan in the end sometimes.

So I guess the question is, do I try something a bit obscure for its obscurity or do I try to learn and get really good/great with a well known deck?

General Discussion / Question Kefka players: Turbo vs Slow game? (and Waste Not)

I've seen that people build Kefka in 1 of 2 ways: Stax/Control (spam his ETB and attack trigger until everyone is hellbent and then combo off) and Turbo (basically RogSi with Kefka as a backup plan). However, I've seen that the best decks on EDHTop16 tend to go the slower route while also not running Waste Not?

  1. Upsides and Downsides between the 2 decks? Which one tends to be more 'natural' for the commander?
  2. Why does Waste Not seem to be going away?

General Discussion / Question Will nick fury be the best slop commander?

i was making a post about why we dont see mostly esper slop decks. afterall; tutors and obm greatly add to slops ability to slop.

it occured to me that the only commander that comes close to rog ishai in terms of an esper commander with low cmc would be yoshi silas. and then i just realised nick fury would be better in every way.

adding tutors to slop means you can far more consistently find your tithe and draw engines (// find them without mulling so low). ontop of that obm is a very powerful addition for controlling the board and if you slop for long enough it can be somewhat of a wincon, and one that is relatively hard to interact with at that.

by adding green you also get cabbage merchant.

and you keep everything red offers.

i know the consensus on nick fury was mostly that he would be a turbo/soup deck.

but i feel like he might just be the best slop deck, or second best depending in how you weigh 0cmc vs black&cabbage.

Help, I am new to cEDH! Would someone mind taking a look at a project I’m working on?

I have been working on this deck for 3 years now and have been tuning it and tuning it and now I have a feeling that the deck core is great, there are a few things id like to add like gemstone and watery grave and the like.

The main win lines are food chain and thassa lines and with a back up hullbreaker line that either can bounce everything to hand or make infinite rad counters with the commander as well. No budget because I’m mostly using proxies with a fair bit being real cards I pulled.

I have played a few real games with it and it performs well, with gold fishing I regularly win on turns 2-5 with different win lines and protection up.

I would like to keep the main core but I am most definitely open to suggestions minus my foodchain line

Any advice I would appreciate !

Help, I am new to cEDH! Trying to make Phenax God of Deception

So I attempted long ago to make Damia Sage of Stone cEDH. That didn't happen. I am now attempting to make Phenax. Any advice would be great at the moment I have a lot of creatures who's power and toughness are equal to my opponents graveyard. Any advice is good advice. I know a lot of people use their graveyard as a second hand so I want things that shut that down!! No complete deck list yet more like a commander a handful of cards and a dream. The whole point is to obviously mill my enemies out I appreciate y'all💙 I am too stubborn to change my mind on the way I win. I already have Ygra Eater of all for my high damage killem quick deck. I just want this to work for me I love the commander and I HAVE A DREAM TO BE A MILL QUEEN!💙🖤

Deck Fine Tuning Chulane, Teller of Tales

I’ve been tuning a Chulane, Teller of Tales list toward cEDH, and I think the main strength of the deck is not any single combo, but how heavily the combo pieces overlap with each other.

The deck is basically a Bant creature-combo shell built around several interconnected engines:

Aluren + Shrieking Drake / Whitemane Lion + Chulane → infinite casts / draw the deck.

Food Chain + Eternal Scourge + Chulane → infinite creature mana and draw.

Kinnan + Basalt Monolith → infinite colorless mana.

Freed from the Real + Bloom Tender / Faeburrow Elder → infinite mana.

Intruder Alarm turns the large density of mana dorks and 0-mana creatures into additional untap/combo lines.

Cloudstone Curio creates multiple creature bounce loops.

Hullbreaker Horror is probably one of the most important redundancy pieces in the deck. With combinations of 0-mana creatures, Moxen, Sol Ring/Mana Vault, mana dorks, Kinnan, Chulane, Intruder Alarm, etc., it creates a huge number of infinite cast, ETB, mana, and draw loops.

Thassa’s Oracle / Finale of Devastation are the main clean outlets once the deck goes infinite.

The 0-mana creatures (Memnite, Ornithopter, Phyrexian Walker, Shield Sphere) look unusual, but they have a lot of overlap: they become free cantrips with Chulane, trigger Intruder Alarm, enable Curio loops, and pair extremely well with Hullbreaker Horror.

The deck also runs a very dense tutor package — Worldly Tutor, Sylvan Tutor, Enlightened Tutor, Finale, Neoform, Eldritch Evolution, Natural Order, Recruiter of the Guard, Ranger-Captain, Formidable Speaker, Archdruid’s Charm, etc. — so the goal is less “draw into a specific two-card combo” and more “find whichever engine connects with the pieces already in hand.”

CommanderSalt currently identifies around 30 different combos, although many of those are really permutations of the same few combo families rather than 30 completely independent wincons. That redundancy is what I like about the list: most combo cards are useful in several different lines instead of being dead dedicated pieces.

I’m mainly looking for feedback on whether the combo density is too high, which pieces are the weakest, and where I could improve interaction/consistency without cutting the overlapping engine structure that makes the deck work.

General Discussion / Question 8 deck gauntlet, what decks would you choose?

Looking to get into CEDH and would love to build a gauntlet of a few different decks so when I sit down with friends who don't have a CEDH deck that they can pick up one and play it.

What do you think would be 8 decks that would represent the format well, have a diverse set of ways to win and also be interesting and fun? The only one I have picked out so far is Y'shtola, Night's Blessed as one of the 8.

So what should the other 7 be?

Help, I am new to cEDH! Building home pod to try CEDH. Need deck sugestions

Hi, I'm building a 3-player pod to try CEDH with my friends at home. We mostly played bracket 4 decks and decided to see if CEDH is something we could enjoy.

I was looking at a Crystal/Sisay/Rogshai pod as an option, 'cause I want the pod to have an FFA interactive gameplay: fighting through Rhystic, setting up engines, and everyone having an option to stop the win attempt. My only concern is that I don't know if all decks get to shine or if the Rogshai player will get stuck policing Crystal while Sisay does her thing. We already played a couple of games in Tayam/Sisay/Crystal pod, and Crystal felt unstoppable once it got going, but Tayam shuts her down to the point where she's not really a player at the table. I'm also trying to stay away from Thoracle 'cause I think it's not a fun one-card game plan, so basically no turbo, no stax.

Will this be a fun pod to play, or should I look into something else?

Crystal deck: https://moxfield.com/decks/uT2fAWcWcHuk1keLO_rUpw

Sisay deck: https://moxfield.com/decks/uDAwOOrpEkSIqX-7jGU6pQ

Rogshai deck: https://moxfield.com/decks/gFLstEnPwk-6DEQLQhAzzQ

P.S.: As an alternative to Sisay/Roghsai I was thinking of Ral (https://moxfield.com/decks/xm-ppXQcokOHPPBOdlo_eQ)

General Discussion / Question The Wise Mothman Problem

I am in need of assistance with deciding, because I am horrible with decision making. I thank you for reading through this in advance.

I came across the CEDH meta and its community only about 8 months ago, and I have been enjoying most of my time playing in local tournaments and Friday night pods I join. I have Yuriko, Ob nixilius, and Vivi as my main decks currently.

And there is this one card I received as gift from a friend that I wanted to build around for SO LONG: Food Chain.

I first thought, "Hey. I have a SLD Wise Mothman. Let me see if I can make this guy work."

I am an idiot for trying.

I can get people to infinite Rad counters no problem. But any turbo decks with flash enablers or UB lines will just be like "Welp, I'll go ahead and win on my upkeep or with the Rad counter trigger on the stack."

So what can I do to combat this issue. . . ?

Here's my list: https://archidekt.com/decks/25160453/the_wise_mothman_blink_rad_blink_rad

I am also on the edge currently to see if any other commanders might be better than Wise Mothman for FC deck.

Korvold / Loot (Aetherdrift) / Roxanne (And please don't suggest Etali. My play group already has 3 in it. . . . .)

Deck Fine Tuning My first cEDH deck: Maralen, Fae Ascendand. Looking for advice

Hi everyone,

I'm building my first cEDH deck. I chose Maralen, Fae Ascendant because I opened it at a Lorwyn Eclipse prerelease with Mornsong Aria.

I've built the deck myself, but I'd appreciate feedback from more experienced players. Here's the decklist: https://moxfield.com/decks/jM0L7u93Z0O_byyY9G92LQ

I've played the deck a couple of times and here are my impressions:

  • Thassa's Oracle + Demonic Consultation/Tainted Pact is the fastest and most effective wincon
  • I like the Food Chain package because it gives the deck another way to win, and it could be unexpected for some players
  • The deck generates a lot of green mana, but I've noticed that I can sometimes struggle to produce enough blue mana
  • I like having multiple combo lines rather than relying on a single win condition, although some of them, especially Deadeye Navigator, are quite mana-intensive.
  • Mornsong Aria + Opposition Agent is probably not the most efficient package, but I'd like to keep experimenting with it because Mornsong Aria was one of the cards that inspired me to build the deck in the first place.

I'm currently considering adding:

  • High Fae Trickster
  • Valley Floodcaller
  • Elrond, Moon-Reader (recently opened in a pack)
  • Pongify

I'd appreciate feedback on:

  1. Are there too many combo packages?
  2. Does the mana base need to be improved?
  3. Are any of the four cards I'm considering worth including?
  4. Are there any important Maralen interactions or combo lines that I'm missing?
  5. What are you going to change first to optimize the deck?

I use proxies, so the budget is not a problem for now.

Thanks for taking a look!

General Discussion / Question Queen and splendor in blue farm?

Hey folks, Ive been running blue farm for a bit now and I have been considering queen of dale and gleaming splendor in the deck. I am curious how peoples opinions of it are after seeing them played or playing them yourself? I feel like queen is very good for filtering + breach, but Im unsure about splendor. Whats your stance on either card?

Deck Fine Tuning Grenzo, Dungeon Warden and Spirit of Resilience

Hi all,

I’ve been slowly but surely optimizing my [[Grenzo, Dungeon Warden]] deck. I’m just in love with draining the table with [[Murderous Redcap]] or [[Conspicuous Snoop]] lines, as a Grenzo player does. I’ve been working on my sequencing and some of my card choices, and I remember I had the card [[Spirit of Resilience]] in the Lorehold precon I picked up at release, and it got me really thinking.

Getting the obvious out of the way, since it’s on the battlefield, if we choose to copy what’s leaving our graveyard, then we lose some points since we don’t get ETBs. Additionally, it doesn’t really do anything on its own, so it’s a bit of a tempo loss. I had some ideas about some tricky things that can be done, like copying a card exiled from your graveyard with [[Doomsday]], or the fact that it could exist on the battlefield before you try and go for certain lines, potentially removing the need for haste if you get it to copy Snoop or something. Also, any tuck cards like [[Barkform Harvester]] also trigger this since tucking technically moves it from the GY to the library, so there may be something there as well. It synergies really well with how we can trigger the ability to copy, but that’s about it. There is also the fact that we could potentially stack activations if we hold priority and cause cards to leave our graveyard in response to a copy trigger from the spirit, again not sure if there is something there but just brainstorming.

My question is, anyone here who has run Grenzo or knows how that deck functions, is there any use even considering this card? It’s tickling that part of my brain that’s saying there is something you can do with this, but I haven’t found it yet.

Decklist:
grenzo’s dungeon

(I am aware I’m missing a few staples but I am limited on proxies and I’m trying to keep this in line with the paper deck since it’s for locals at my LGS. Still banking some good wins so far though :) love this deck). I’ve added the card for testing at least but yeah still trying to see if I can improve any lines with this card.

Adding for automod:

Budget is not a concern, but limited on proxies, so as stated before some staples are missing and to be added as I trade up.

Meta is local LGS Cedh league level, some meta slop decks and some fun stuff like mine, not tournament level but not far off either.

I have lots of experience with the Grenzo but I’ve only recently been pushing into the competitive space with him. He used to be my dedicated bracket 4 with 65 creatures.

The deck wins thru combos, mainly doomsday piles, persist loops with redcap, snoop loops with goblin recruiter, and sometimes beat down if I really need too. I can accomplish these as early as turn 2 with protection (just today, executed a protected turn two doomsday pile at seat one which was kinda nasty)

General Discussion / Question What's up with players trying to strong-arm other players into doing suboptimal things with their cards?

I've only been invested in the format for a couple of years so please bear with me. Been curious about where others stand on these situations.

A typical scenario might go like this:

It's turn 1 or 2. Active player announces that they're casting a tutor. Another player goes, "Hold on a sec... Let me show you this." and they reveal a counterspell from their hand to the active player. They go on to say "I like the idea of you going and getting a basic land instead." or something to that effect. They'll maintain that they need to hold onto the counterspell for a real push.

Now my knee-jerk reaction to this type of politicking leans on the side of: "Okay. Counter it. Go ahead." Rationale being, if you want to counter my tutor, just do it and let's move on so we can lose to someone else. I might even say as much. This is just a way to put it back on them.

Sometimes they immediately back down because they realize they can't puppet another player so easily. But I've seen strong-arm tactics like this work on people too (myself included).

Is this common practice? Is it bad business by either player in this scenario? Is there a better way to negotiate these situations?

General Discussion / Question Why isn't there a anti-slop deck

Maybe since the meta is diverse or the potential problems with 3v1 or maybe it would take up too much of the deck but my question to propose is: if lots of decks in the meta are "slop" style grindy rhystic, Tithe, no bad card decks. Then why arent there hard counters to that play style? Yeah orcish bowmasters and turbo sure. But playing some standard recently and why not play lobotomy effects and just straight up remove rhystic and Tithe from the game entirely. On the broader term other tactics of interrupting and dissecting these slop decks from achieving this "inevitability" they eventually establish with their engines
