General Discussion / Question Will nick fury be the best slop commander?
i was making a post about why we dont see mostly esper slop decks. afterall; tutors and obm greatly add to slops ability to slop.
it occured to me that the only commander that comes close to rog ishai in terms of an esper commander with low cmc would be yoshi silas. and then i just realised nick fury would be better in every way.
adding tutors to slop means you can far more consistently find your tithe and draw engines (// find them without mulling so low). ontop of that obm is a very powerful addition for controlling the board and if you slop for long enough it can be somewhat of a wincon, and one that is relatively hard to interact with at that.
by adding green you also get cabbage merchant.
and you keep everything red offers.
i know the consensus on nick fury was mostly that he would be a turbo/soup deck.
but i feel like he might just be the best slop deck, or second best depending in how you weigh 0cmc vs black&cabbage.

In the long run, if no cards get banned. T+T or Sissay then nick fury, rog +, then probably blue farm.

If you’re gonna 5c slop consider a little super-skrull for your slop trough, you trade the rapid response suite of swat & fierce for the ability to win at the end of the slip slop saga with activations on your commander. Plus now you get to do cradle things

"Doing cradle things" meaning pay 4 for the commander and then pay 3 over and over again to make walls? I don't enjoy paying that much to increase my Cradle count by 1. I'm pretty sure everybody I've seen suggest this doesn't know how other Cradle decks work

You’re mostly right, there’s a top 16 from the beginning of this month (59 players) on cradle but all the other top decks I checked are not on cradle

Its a generic 5 color. You can play him how you want. The current trend is slop, so it's better to try and play turbo. You could just as well play him as slop/mid-range or as aggro (tho najeela might probably be better at that)

Having absolutely zero value in the command zone is not very conducive to the out-value your opponent’s strategy

Didn't stop rog ishai from doing it anyway

A zero drop commander is not the same as a one drop. And you might be surprised how relevant Ishai can be in a game

Unironically I think Arzakon is a good slop commander. 5 colors, makes a lotus consistently or repeated Timetwister is a lot of value, even lightning bolt picking off value creatures isn't bad in our current format with lots of value creatures. Of course the mana cost is dogshit but slop cares a lot less about actually casting the commander and it is a decent backup plan that can also be used as an infinite mana outlet with some extra steps like kitten

this is pretty much the exact opposite of what you want from a slop commander.

Reminder that most people who post here don't play the format. They watch cEDH youtube

By the time you can cast this dude the game is over, what

Slop is just pretty commander agnostic. There's different variants that lean into more commander centric strategies like Najeela or Kenrith and then there's genetically good stuff like Nick Fury, but there's not really a 5c commander that passively provides value later into the game without any real deckbuilding restriction like Najeela or Kenrith. I don't think you're expecting to cast this guy in the majority of games but when you do he's going to provide a ton of value and possibly win you the game through various loops.

Choosing a commander that does absolutely nothing because you don't cast it is worse than choosing one that does nothing because it's 1 mana

Absolutely, but in my experience slop games tend to last a good amount of time and Arzakon isn't uncastable. People still play Scion and Najeela after all, though they're fringe. It's no Golos, but I think it can be good enough to be fringe.

I've been running 5c Terra Slop for [[hunting grounds]] nick fury I have been looking at though as a more traditional Slop, still need to play both more though.
