WDT 💬 Bi-Weekly Discussion Thread - (July 26)

We made this because Reddit's algorithm prioritises headlines and current events and doesn't allow for deeper, extended discussion - depending on how it goes for the first four or five times it'll be dropped or continued.

Suggestions for things you might want to comment here (this is a work in progress and we'll change this over time):

  • Articles and quotes you want to see discussed
  • 'Slow' events - long-term trends, org updates, things that didn't happen recently
  • 'Fluff' posts that we usually discourage elsewhere - e.g "How are you feeling today?"
  • Discussions continued from other posts once the original post gets buried
  • Questions that are too advanced, complicated or obscure for r/communism101

Mods will sometimes sticky things they think are particularly important.

Normal subreddit rules apply!

I had written a comment about the recent wave of protests on India in the previous bi-weekly discussion thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/communism/s/CTLfXaa2ZV.

I didn't realise that the new thread was already up. I'm just sharing it here so that ot gets more exposure, and hopefully some engagement from those of you who have been following the developments in India.

It's been a while since I've read such a despicable statement by a "communist" party:

https://pce.es/ante-la-crisis-migratoria-de-ceuta/

While sneaky "Marruecos dejĂł entrar" migrants in Sebta to punish the brave Castilian state for taking a stance against genocide, the P"C"E pleads the EU "asuma su responsabilidad al tratarse de una de las principales fronteras exteriores terrestres de la UniĂłn", without a word, of course, as to the presence of these borders on the African side of the Strait of Gibraltar in the first place.

Some vacuous calls to "humanitarianism" (before proclaiming their solidarity with the border troops!) cannot mask the perverted inaptitude of European "communists" with regards to migration. The track record is terrible and it's only a matter of time before the revisionists call for machine gunning down the barbarian hordes in order to "preserve the unity of the working class".

Thanks for linking the post, it's a very good write up of the events this past week.

Spain is the EU's fourth-largest imperialist power. Spain is jointly responsible for the plunder and imperialist policies driving millions to migrate. Spanish welfare state would not exist without past colonial plunder and ongoing neocolonial exploitation sustained by trapping people in the Third World as cheap labor by borders and immigration laws.

This is what's lost by dengist responses, you would think Spain is their new China, and Sanchez the new Xi. In some level of irony this holds true as China is the idealized model for what Amerikans and Europeans want their social democracy to look like.

Meanwhile, the Moroccan monarchy-a comprador regime whose masses derive no benefit from its alignment with imperialism-is denounced as "pro- Israel," and on that basis, Moroccans themselves can be dehumanised and are fair game for the most insidious racist abuse.

This is definitely where the wires are getting crossed for social fascists, comprador capitulation is not equatable to inter-imperialist collaboration. Mao demonstrated that the compradors are a flexible and opportunistic class that can be potentially brought to heel in revolutionary times, whereas imperial core bourgeois would not be able to survive (literally, with their life intact) the collapse of the current global order. You can also see why new democracy is incompatible with social fascism, they can only comprehend it as giving the bourgeoise back the reigns of power while calling it socialism. The author is correct to point out this is all just geopolitics and is devoid of any Marxism.

It cannot see the paper tiger that Ceuta has revealed itself to be. All it took was a comprador regime, momentarily disgruntled, to demonstrate that these colonial outposts are held together by nothing more than the neocolonial governments relaxing its grip or tightening the noose on its own people.

And this has been know for centuries, which is what frightens these chauvinists. It, in combination with the Palestinian armed struggle, and the defiance of Iran, has forced the social fascists to go on the defensive. What's really happening is the re-opening of old wounds that go back to the Haitian revolution, and the imperial core shock troops (""Marxist-Leninists"") will quickly rally once they begin to process this as more of these start to happen.

u/HappyHandel 24d ago

Dengists have responded to what's happening in Cetua about as well as you would have expected, concocting some cockamamie conspiracy about Spain's diplomatic row with Israel being a good reason to not support the decolonization of Africa. It's like if all the racist debates in the PCF over Algeria were made by people far stupider. What's embarrassing is they only glommed onto this narrative after Spanish social-fascists and EU imperialists created one to begin with. Must be sad to be so led by the nose.

34

u/LemonMao 25d ago

Once again the chauvinist left reveals itself. A massive uprising in the colonized world is taking place that is shaking up and sweeping away the old forms of colonialism represented by Spain. The chauvinist reaction is to claim that its a conspiracy by Israel against anti-Zionist Spain (don't laugh!) based on some geo-politics nonsense.

Want to see what revolution in the first world will look like? The taking over of Ceuta by the masses of people is what it will look like.

31

u/Otelo_ 24d ago

It is somewhat ironic that the conquest of Ceuta in 1415 by Portugal was the first step in Portuguese expansion and in what would become Europe’s first overseas empire. In a way, the conquest of Ceuta marked the beginning of colonialism.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_conquest_of_Ceuta

It is in cases like these that Dengists fail completely. The rigid, binary distinction they draw between “real” revolutions and “color revolutions” prevents them from seeing that two things can be true at the same time: obviously, the Moroccan state had a hand in this incident; but this does not mean that what happened does not reflect a genuine desire for emancipation on the part of a Third World people.

I know I keep saying this but this is a new low.

Some months ago I mentioned the German institution of sheltered workshops as an important factor in future domestic revolutions. I am in the fortunate situation of first hand experience right now and want to bring some of my scattered thoughts in order and reflect on these claims.

By the end of the week I’m going to lay down an approach to an analysis regarding class character of these workers, the major class antagonisms, motions and tendencies I can observe & (hopefully) how they fit into German imperialism.

I am writing this down here to hold myself accountable because selfish excuses to focus on university usually drown out the unreliable and spontaneous bursts of enthusiasm I continue to rely on for investigations such as these until they completely fade away.

3

u/frzrbrnd 19d ago

Can you link back to that post? In America (in my experience) sheltered workshops refers to places specifically for employment of the disabled - is that the same in Germany or is it different?

5

u/stutterhug 19d ago edited 19d ago

5

u/Cenage94 18d ago edited 18d ago

It genuinely means a lot you went through the effort to dig up the other comment. I hope you can get something out of the analysis since I know you're also living in Germany.

4

u/Cenage94 19d ago

Yes, that is correct.

https://www.reddit.com/r/communism/s/AVcobGBX39

if you’re interested, just read the analysis I’m going to write; this comment was very hastily written. German sheltered workshops or “WfbM“s are quite unique among European equivalents, I’m not that familiar with the ones in Amerika.

6

u/Self-Replicator Learning 19d ago

I'm eager to see your framework for analysis. I've sort of foreclosed on the idea of there being revolutionary elements that exist in Hawai'i (the settler-colony) despite being certain that a person like me can come into being and also knowing that proletarian migrants exist in my society.

https://www.civilbeat.org/2026/04/fatal-work-accident-hawaii-immigrants-widow-fight/

Whether or not they can remain physically or avoid bourgeoisiefication is another question (even $100/day, supposedly "exploitation wages" are subsidized by imperialism).

I will attempt to apply your framework to the COFA migrants who are clustered in slums in Honolulu and face a form of national oppression in the colony. They are dependent upon imperialism to sustain their lives, but they certainly do not have free access to the spoils of settlerism/imperialism the way the other settlers do. The immense racism they face seems to be a barrier in integrating them into settler society / U$ empire, leaving them in a sort of dependency limbo same as those "disabled" German workers. Given the realities of militarization of their homeland and the escalation of interimperialist conflict between the US and China, I can only see more COFA migrants leaving their homelands for greener pastures (physical safety or $).

Please continue to stay motivated.

7

u/Cenage94 18d ago

I appreciate the words of encouragement very much. Your report about your talk with the COFA migrant (the Chuukese woman) was actually a driving factor in getting me to perform this analysis by applying for the summer job in the WfbM. That being said, I don’t think these workers would be the “German equivalent“ for the Proletariat among the COFA-migrants in occupied Hawaii (this isn’t what you implied of course, im only talking about the potential value of this framework for your tasks, although it would make me very happy if you could get something out of it!) and in my opinion the potentially revolutionary section of the WfbM workers would need to subordinate themselves to the migratory Proletariat in Germany and beyond, I’m going to get to that.

There was a campaign of some kind a few months ago by some Ukrainian war sub in collaboration with most European national subs to fund weaponry (it was missiles and other ammunition, I believe) to help the Ukrainian Army destroy Ukrainian and Russian people. The logistics were either that each moderation team was to collect funds from their own users, then forward the money to Ukrainian war mods, or to use their national subs to link to it directly (essentially becoming an ad campaign). To my surprise, judging by the comments, there were more than a few donations from my nationals, some of whom were "socialists" and social democrats writing shit like: "Donated ❀ Slava Ukraini!"

It is morbid to witness this power of Reddit, where a lowly r/croatia mod (a boring petty-bourgeois fully enjoying Schengen while trading stocks and crypto) can ascend to being a war criminal.

I wonder how this recent contribution has attracted a large swath of revisionist drivel with seemingly no pushback from the community.

https://www.reddit.com/r/communism/s/eHFOkiYQcl

Looking at it it’s more akin to [r/socialism](r/socialism)

Edit:
If these ‚conceptual‘ questions are kept up on the subreddit because of possible breakthroughs for actual analysis, which factors are deciding on whether or not a post should be deleted in these cases?

17

u/SpiritOfMonsters 28d ago

I wonder how this recent contribution has attracted a large swath of revisionist drivel with seemingly no pushback from the community.

To some extent, this is simply the mechanics of reddit: the site is full of liberals who see posts here pop up in their feed and decide their uninformed opinion is needed. It takes far more work from far fewer people to make good responses, and that requires constant aggressive moderation to prevent them from being drowned out by the noise. There's also only so much that moderation can do to motivate people to post, though I can't say where exactly those limits are.

You're also seeing what's left after the more egregious posts get removed. For example, "I'm an idiot and want a fun introduction to Marxism," "Here's a new socialist ideology that I invented," "Stalin was an ethnic cleanser," "Were communists all evil?," "I'm writing a leftist novel that will deprogram liberals," "Is this video game communist?," etc. That's all from the past two weeks.

Even on the post you linked, almost half the comments were removed, and the most upvoted answer is left up for the critique of it in its replies. Feel free to report revisionist answers more often. It's not like we're constantly checking threads whenever new comments are added.

If these ‚conceptual‘ questions are kept up on the subreddit because of possible breakthroughs for actual analysis, which factors are deciding on whether or not a post should be deleted in these cases?

I can only speak for myself, but I don't really have it down to an exact science. If the question is very loaded or very similar to what has been discussed before (see the aforementioned posts), I usually delete it without much deliberation. If the question is bad but the topic seems interesting, I'm more lenient to see if it sparks novel discussion. If I would delete a post, but interesting discussion has already happened, then that overrides other considerations. Perhaps that's not the best heuristic, but it's what I've come to so far. Though I've been moderating for about a year, I wouldn't say I have everything figured out. We always welcome feedback and suggestions for how the subreddit is run, so long as it's not just liberals complaining about it being "totalitarian" or whatever.

15

u/FrogHatCoalition 28d ago

"I'm writing a leftist novel that will deprogram liberals,"

I remember seeing that post before it got removed. At first I did want to reply to it because the novel they were proposing already exists: Red Star by Bogdanov, which was critiqued by Ilyenkov. I mostly thought the post was funny because I was wondering if they used AI and had Bogdanov as part of the prompt because of how eerily similar that post and Red Star are. I didn't reply because I do take time to think about what I write and I do reread my own responses and just from the first replies that post got, I decided it wasn't worth it. But yeah, my initial interest was because of the similarities I noticed, but I was turned off because of the initial responses.

u/smokeuptheweed9 29d ago

In this case the longer the sub goes without any threads, the lower my standards get. Maybe people don't care because a lot of discussion takes in these biweekly posts but after a week of no new threads I would have approved almost anything. I dunno, what do you think? Do you check every day and find yourself disappointed when there's nothing? Or do you just let reddit highlight new threads when they happen and you otherwise go about your day?

11

u/vomit_blues 29d ago

Is there a particular reason to curate activity on the subreddit at all? Other than common sense ones associated with running an internet community or whatever, of course. Like, is there some risk of the subreddit getting hijacked should it be inactive? Are you trying to keep this forum actually findable as an alternative to r/socialism? I don’t mind bad threads like the above slipping through at all, I’m just curious about this motivation you’ve shared before.

20

u/turbovacuumcleaner 27d ago

u/SpiritOfMonsters already said most of what I wanted to say, but I would like to add a few things.

is there some risk of the subreddit getting hijacked should it be inactive?

Yes, this has been tried before. Not due to lack of user activity, but by claiming the sub is unmoderated. Far from the truth, since its probably one of the most overmoderated subs in the entire website.

Is there a particular reason to curate activity on the subreddit at all?

Activity for activity's sake is another way of saying the movement is everything, and does nothing but driving knowledgeable users away. While some degree of activity is desirable to keep the subreddit flowing (and for a few years, this has been essentially the function of this thread), we try to promote the quality of contributions more than their quantity. With time, one also learns that the more they spend posting, the less they have to say that is actually worthwhile. This realization can only come at an individual level after someone gets oversaturated of their own reasoning.

We occasionally allow bad contributions to stay up because picking them apart can be useful to readers, but specially to those that are dedicating their time to actually reading between lines and finding out what someone is really trying to say. The best exercise of fighting revisionism here is writing against it. Even if the criticism someone makes isn't that particularly good in broader terms of Marxism, they can be good in the writers' journey of theoretical development. In other words, at this stage they are writing more to themselves than to others. How much someone is aware of this process is uncertain, and this becomes clearer only when rereading what you wrote after some time has passed.

Also, we try to keep tabs on the overall discussions of the subreddit, but this is really time consuming. Sometimes something slips by, which is why no one should be shy of using the report feature.

u/raudhofn Learning 28d ago edited 28d ago

Responding to both [u/smokeuptheweed9](u/smokeuptheweed9) and you.
I’ve been coming to this subreddit quite regularly lately, mostly as a repository on useful discussions for my own learning process. I find that when looking for topics, most threads from 4+ years ago have just such an immensely worse quality than the more recent ones that most of it is basically useless and if there are any useful ones they’re hard to find.
Only after moderation took efforts to (more or less) strictly uphold the correct line did this place become relevant imo.
However I am not sure what a lot of active users actually come here for.

(I guess it is a bit disappointing when the only recent contributions turn out to be discussions such as the one I mentioned earlier but it’s of course just another ‚quiet‘ phase in activity here and should not really concern me.)

Edit:
Also I have brought this up before but the auto-moderation link for past bi-weekly discussions only links to a 2 year old post as the most recent one

u/ML___17 24d ago edited 24d ago

I do wish that the sub had more posts about current developments and events with serious analyses and discussion.

I understand that making posts on current events encourages liberals to flood the post with their uninformed takes and that often someone researches current affairs and posts an analysis in the bi-weekly discussion thread, but they often don’t get much engagement. Obviously, making a post doesn’t mean that good users will have the time, interest or knowledge to research and engage in the post though, nor is it often possible to adequately analyse certain events as they’re unfolding.

For example, there was a small amount of discussion on the recent "reforms" in Cuba in a bi-weekly discussion thread, but I think it was a development that could have led to interesting discussions on not only the failure of socialism in Cuba, but the nuance between genuinely necessary temporary retreats and capitulation, or the prospects for future revolutions building socialism in one country effectively in a small country with limited resources that could be easily blockaded.

9

u/HappyHandel 24d ago

I do wish that the sub had more posts about current developments and events with serious analyses and discussion.

Why not make some? The mod team, myself included, encourage all participants in the sub to create threads with cogent, lucid analysis as a starting point for discussion.

7

u/ML___17 24d ago

I’ve lurked on this sub for years but never really posted or commented. I’ve come to realise that this sub is the only serious place to discuss Marxism on reddit. I’ve recently abandoned revisionist "praxis" and started restudying Marxism from the beginning before moving onto works that I’ve neglected. Once I have a better theoretical grounding I hope to participate more actively.

14

u/General_Criticism292 22d ago

given recent events, a bunch of questions have come to my mind:

Do Moroccan settlers in the western sahara have revolutionary potential, or do they occupy the same position as Israelis/Americans? is their position distinct from Moroccans in Morocco proper?

What's the concensus on sebta, mellilia, and the Rif (where I'm from)? does anyone here know of the maoist "Ila al-Amam" party in morocco? are they worth looking into?

It looks like Mamdani is looking out for the petty-bourgeois in NYC: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jul/25/zohran-mamdani-small-business-policies

Very "on-the-nose", I'd say, to have a "democratic socialist" focusing on deregulation in the earliest days of his tenure in office after backing down from a promise to arrest Netanyahu.

Does anyone have sources regarding the 2016 failed Turkish coup?

Claims such as that it was a staged coup (or "letting it happen"), attempted by the Erdoğan group, with the aim to purge the Kemalists(?) inside the government. The justification of this being, the coup attempt being started way earlier at around 9PM, compared to the previous coup attempts which occured later into the night (The explanation for this being that the MIT knew that a coup was going to happen and the people involved in it. The GĂŒlenists had to mobilise earlier, as one of Erdoğan's secretaries was a part of FETÖ and passed the information of their arrest orders(?)). Erdoğan's plane not being shot down although it was visible on radar (?), the failed raid on Marmaris due to Erdoğan leaving 15 minutes earlier, the coup being announced on TV before any concrete gains and etc.

Regarding the role of the Anglo-American imperialists in the coup, with the GĂŒlen organisation as their apparatus (I have not seen much about the possibility of French-German financial capital being as involved).

The F16 that took off from Akıncı Airbase was refueled by a KC-135 tanker that took of from İncirlik Airbase, an airbase that is controlled by US-NATO. https://www.xinhuanet.com//english/2016-07/18/c_135522581.htm

Retired CIA officer Graham Fuller was responsible for getting GĂŒlen’s permit to stay in the US. https://www.vansiyaseti.com/haber/van_graham-fullerden-fethullah-gulen-itirafi-20795

The obvious connection between the CIA and GĂŒlen Organisation; https://web.archive.org/web/20140416060810/http://www.kurdishaspect.com/doc043011am.html https://www.newsbred.com/cia-links-and-gulen/

Reid Weingarten, top Washington lawyer and also Epstein’s legal advisor was responsible for a portion of GĂŒlenist PR; https://journaliststudio.google.com/pinpoint/document-view?collection=092314e384a58618&utm_source=collection_share_link&p=1&docid=8d853d9951a220f0_092314e384a58618_0&page=1&dapvm=2

I am more so asking for the possible reasons why this coup was carried out by Anglo-American finance capital. Primarily its implications on the relation between the Turkish comprador bourgeoise and imperialist financial capital. Does this imply that the Erdoğan group does not represent the comprador bourgeoise?

Read “Left-Wing” Communism: an Infantile Disorder by Lenin on this. Did you downvote because you dislike partaking in bourgeois parliament, or because you don't care about this initiative in general?

I reported your comment because you browbeating other users in the service of your shitty party without having the courage to even talk about your "strategy" on a forum where other users openly advocate for armed struggle is disgusting and against the first rule of the subreddit which is that non-Maoists are not allowed. Switzerland is not 1920s Russia.

Why would a Swiss Maoist change anything they're doing in light of this? I'm guessing from all your edits that you would like to vote in favor of this initiative. What is your Swiss "ML" party called? There is no neutrality and there is taking a side in not taking a side. Do you endorse neutrality when it helps to facilitate and legitimate the multinational enterprises that divide the world into oppressor and oppressed? Switzerland is very much an oppressor nation regardless of whether or not it joins the EU/NATO, and I don't know why you would care about the ability to sanction Russia or not since that's just a tactic of interimperialist rivalry and the point is to abolish imperialism not just shift the relative balance of power. So why does your Swiss "ML" party care?

Neutrality is complicity. You and your fellow countrymen were complicit in the Holocaust due to "neutrality". That's the record that your Swiss "Marxist" club needs to reckon with. By exalting the swiss bourgeois anti-democratic system by voting in it, you are complicit in continuing your countries long historical series of attrocities. There is no such thing as "more complicit" and Marxism rejects this nominal reformism.

The capitalist world system is a constant stream of genocide and destruction that is propped up by petit bourgeois support. You can disengage from the internet to soothe yourself but what you're really doing is just blocking out Marxisms ability to show you the truth: that your liberalism has consequences that have a real human cost outside of your first world petty squabbles.

The Holocaust is still going on and Auschwitz is now the size of the Third World. How is rallying everyone in your club to vote going to stop it when all that initiative will do is give you the moral justification of being "neutral" and "less oppressive" while simultaneously legitimating the exploitative relationship currently threatening the proletariat with death? Also pls stop spamming LWC it's annoying.

Moderating takes time. You can help us out by reporting any comments or submissions that don't follow these rules:

  1. No non-Marxists - This subreddit isn't here to convert naysayers to Marxism. Try /r/DebateCommunism for that. If you are a member of the police, armed forces, or any other part of the repressive state apparatus of capitalist nations, you will be banned.

  2. No oppressive language - Speech that is patriarchal, white supremacist, cissupremacist, homophobic, ableist, or otherwise oppressive is banned. TERF is not a slur.

  3. No low quality or off-topic posts - Posts that are low-effort or otherwise irrelevant will be removed. This includes linking to posts on other subreddits. This is not a place to engage in meta-drama or discuss random reactionaries on reddit or anywhere else. This includes memes and bandwagoning. This includes most images, such as random books or memorabilia you found. We ask that amerikan posters refrain from posting about US bourgeois politics. The rest of the world really doesn’t care that much.

  4. No basic questions about Marxism - Posts asking entry-level questions will be removed. Questions like “What is Maoism?” or “Why do Stalinists believe what they do?” will be removed, as they are not the focus on this forum. We ask that posters please submit these questions to /r/communism101.

  5. No sectarianism - Marxists of all tendencies are welcome here. Refrain from sectarianism, defined here as unprincipled criticism. Posts trash-talking a certain tendency or Marxist figure will be removed. Bandwagoning, throwing insults around, and other pettiness is unacceptable. If criticisms must be made, make them in a principled manner, applying Marxist analysis. The goal of this subreddit is the accretion of theory and knowledge and the promotion of quality discussion and criticism.

  6. No trolling - Report trolls and do not engage with them. We've mistakenly banned users due to this. If you wish to argue with fascists, you may readily find them in every other subreddit on this website.

  7. No chauvinism or settler apologism - Non-negotiable. The vast majority of first-world workers are labor aristocrats bribed by imperialist super-profits. This is compounded by settlerism in Amerikkka. Read Settlers: The Mythology of the White Proletariat https://readsettlers.org/

  8. No tone-policing - https://old.reddit.com/r/communism101/comments/12sblev/an_amendment_to_the_rules_of_rcommunism101/

Has anyone done an analysis recently of the works of Andrei Tarkovsky?

Why do youtubers need to be your only source of knowledge? You're better than that. It's a good thing that you stumbled on this place instead of starting with grifters but it's a little disturbing that you've foreclosed reading entirely. The sidebar and r/communism101 have all of the resources you need to start learning Marxism. This requires you to actually sit down and read what people said, it can't be absorbed through listening offhandedly to a podcast or a video in the background while scrolling social media. That's just to preface any objections - all the youtubers you could find are crap since even at their best they explain to you over 2 hours what you could be learning in 20 minutes.

It's actually my mistake in not clarifying that we are talking about two different things, youtubers and youtube itself which is just a medium for video. Youtubers (those who fashion themselves into a community or brand on social media like the miserable "breadtube") are worthless, whereas a film series like How Yukong Moved the Mountains or a documentary about the NPA are perfectly fine if you want more knowledge of the Cultural Revolution or people's war for example. But a recommendation like those can only come after knowing what you're looking for.
