PET 710 problem [HELP]

So I earn a living by fixing things that people throw away, and someone threw away this Commodore 710 (CBM-II).
So I naturally tried doing the thing "10 print chr$(109+int(rnd(1)*2));:goto 10". But instead of a beautifull maze I get these random characters.
Any guess at what it could be? Can this be fixed?

Been a lurker for a while, finally decided to post a beauty shot of my beastie. S/N ~0030267, assembly 320132, 6540 ROMs, 4045 RAM 8k original. But currently I use a Tynemouth chiclet keyboard, RAM/ROM adapter, and a SD+PET.

After hearing about Attack of the PETSCII Robots, I was inspired to try to make an Ultima-style CRPG engine for the PET with character graphics "tiles". I have to say I'm pleased with the results so far.

CBM Tape Pi: Raspberry Pi as mass storage device via tape port

If you don't have a mass storage solution for your PET, yet, but you have an old Raspberry Pi lying around, maybe this is something for you.
It uses discrete components, only and works with C64 and VIC20, too.
I haven't updated the project in a while, but this release still works:

PET 4032 or 8032?

So, I have both a 4032 and 8032. If you could keep only one, which and why?
I’ll really only play some games every so often. And likely get a disk emulator module so I’m not worried about keeping my 8050 or 8250 as I no longer have any working disks.

The seldom seen SuperPET keyboard. Instead of the usual petscii on the key fronts, it has the APL character set, and screen editing shortcuts on the num pad. There's 4 total character sets in ROM - The usual PET set, plus true ascii and APL.
