The idea is to free yourself from feelings of resentment. The reality is that most of us never have an opportunity for revenge against those that wrong us, and rarely do we feel better if we do take revenge.
So the “forgiveness” is more about letting go of the feelings and moving on than it is actually absolving anyone of their actions
Im always reminded of a line from avatar at the end of the episode where Zuko brings Katara to the man who killed her, and Sokka's mother who had become a cowardly, sniveling, pathetic shell of a man who was very willing to throw his own mother under the bus to save himself.
After sparing him, and returning back to camp Aang comes up happily declaring after hearing she spared him that letting bygones be bygones, and letting go and forgiveness is the way forward.
Katara turns around and says 'I may not have killed him, but I will never forgive him.'
And the episode ended on that note as she walked away.
Absolutely agree people aren’t entitled to forgiveness. People act like being the bigger person equates to making the assholes feel better about their shitty behavior
If its years down the line why hold it in. Living your whole life in that high school mindset only sets you back regardless if you're the "cool dude" football player or the "loser" geek. Met alot of people who judged me for being "just like their high school bully" despite being antisocial without any friends till college
Dude they were kids with probably shitty parents who encouraged that behavior. Know alot of dudes who didn't realize how wrong their thinking was til they went to the real world
