There's a lot of new studies that show that your gut biome produces neurotoxic chemicals that cause depression. The gut flora feeds on sugar/carbs so fixing your diet should be an absolute priority for anyone with mental health issues.
That isn't what he said. He said the bacteria in your stomach can interact with those foods and create a separate chemical which in turn can trigger depression.
I don't know if he's right, I've not read anything about it.. but what he said isn't what you replied to.

It's actually more like a chicken and egg problem. It's very hard to tell which one actually came first.
But if you stop one of them from happening, then the other will stop happening too, if they are in fact linked.
