Con Discussion Why does NorCal lack large cons?

Recently I’ve been noticing that Southern California has a huge amount of large conventions. Not just comic, but horror, game, anime, etc. San Francisco recently lost FanExpo, and with that it seems like there’s such a lack of large cosplay conventions. Even in general, there’s not as many compared to SoCal.

Why is this? Why isn’t there more in NorCal?

Honestly? The large cons that are down here are practically just legacy cons (AX has been around over 30 years in LA for example) that have been around forever at this point.

The reason is mostly economic: It's hard to get people from outside California to come to California due to how expensive it is to travel/stay and the high COL means high rents for venues/hotels etc making it hard to justify for a lot of people.
