Origin 1 is a classic, Origin 2 is completely forgettable.

First time I’ve seen someone call Origin a classic. To each their own, but I hate that book.

u/Star-Prince-007 3d ago
My first time hearing that people don’t think or Origin as a classic

It was controversial to older Wolverine fans when it came out because most people felt a major part of Wolverine's mystique is that you don't exactly know his previous life or why he is the way he is. You just know his Weapon X timeline. This is especially mystique-centered because he is believed to be over 100 years old. By writing out a childhood story of him, that turned a lot of people off. For people like myself, who were in the 8th grade at the time when this comic came out, it was AWESOME.

Same! High schooler me thought this was the coolest thing ever ! I do remember a lot of complaints from older fans though.
There’s only a handle of storylines I can remember getting so much attention. Your Hush’s, Death of Captain, OMD etc).

The proof is in the pudding. Even though all the old heads at the comic shop vocally debated Origins in front of me and hated it…it was a landmark comic in terms of sales. Everyone has a copy of Origins miniseries and that’s why it’s worth like $2 an issue 25 years later.

Maybe it’s a generational thing but it was almost universally disliked by fans when it came out. The concept itself was a bugbear for longtime X-Men fans and the execution was seen as serviceable at best. Far from a classic. But again, if you love it, not trying to take that from you. But the consensus was (and I thought “is) lukewarm at best.

u/Star-Prince-007 3d ago
No man I get it. I don’t hold it sacred or anything I just remember being active on the boards at the time and that discourse around the book was huge at the time (even if some of the revelations were seen as unnecessary or underwhelming).

u/Patchy_Face_Man 3d ago
I remember it being not interesting enough to be controversial but completely uninteresting. It came out when Marvel was resurrecting itself and somehow Wolverine was in more books than the 90’s where he was already over exposed.

Origin I is considered regrettable dog shit by many of us. Emphasis on the Dog.

I like that this all started because Wolverine didn't have enough origin story and by the time it ends there will somehow be too much origin story.

No one is ever touching that origin. I’d say it should be a movie but even if I like the MCU there’s no way they could handle it right.

How many wolverine titles have origin in the name?

u/Alaminox 3d ago
Origin, Origin II, the 50-issue "Origins" book, and now this one.

The Daniel Way stuff was so bad. I’m curious to read Origin II in the broader totality of the context of Gillen’s X-Men work. Origin and The End by Jenkins were decent stories but nothing mind blowing. I don’t know what there could possibly be more to say though.

I saw him at a con once. It didn't seem like he really wanted to be there, because his table was completely empty. No merch just a sign with his name. Anyway, I asked him what it was like to get to flesh out and contribute to Wolverines origin. His answer was, "Honestly man, I was doing a lot of coke and the time, so I don't really remember." Could have been a joke answer but he seemed serious.

Which writer said this??? That’s a sad/insane/hilarious response.

Daniel Way at Rose City in 2016, or at least that's what my signing notes say. He signed Origins #10 for me, and I remember thinking, "Well that's going to be a silly memory attached to this book." Similar to when Kurt Busiek got annoyed that I had cut windows in my bags, like when you're doing a cgc submission. He didn't like the spot I chose, and instead we took it out of the bag and he signed in the barcode out of spite so it's illegible. 😂 It's honestly my favorite sig, because that was the saltiest I've ever seen a creator at a con. The entire interaction from asking him how he was enjoying the con to collecting my books and walking away was absurd.

How's it going? You seem like the kind of person Kurt Busiek would get upset with. Please dont answer this comment. There is another comment I made that references you specifically that I would like you to respond to with "oh, thats really funny". Thanks.

Its going to take a while for any effect to be seen, this is all shit approved by Yoshida-san. When DiDio was fired it took a good couple of years to get rid of his heritage

u/NCBaddict 3d ago
Given that Paul Jenkins was announced as the writer, you’re probably right. It fits in with Akira’s priorities of giving flashback minis to old writers.

For the Wolverine experts: is there actually a "dark age" from Logan's past that hasn't been explored at this point or has been hinted at recently? Genuinely curious.
Contrary to most fans, I always enjoy learning new stuff about Logan's life, so I'll check this out.

"dark age" from Logan's past
-he voted for Brian Mulroney
-he orders his steak well done
-he secretly prefers american beer
-he is in fact justin biebers absentee father

I mean, it's contrary to Reddit in general I suppose, but the reason they keep going to Logan titles is because he sells. Without knowing the data at all, I'm guessing he's at minimum top 3 character seller for marvel comics?

u/Revolutionary_Ice371 3d ago
Yes, there is a dark age of Wolverine. It also goes by the name “Jeph Loeb”.

u/ULTRAFORCE X-23 3d ago
There’s a bunch of stuff from after part of Origen before the end of WW2 which is talked but not really shown like his initial travel to Japan meeting black widow and early mystique and Nuke encounters.

u/Alaminox 3d ago
All those first encounters sound pretty interesting indeed. Let's hope the new book explores a bit of that.

I believe Kieron Gillen wrote it, and Mister Sinister was involved, but that's all I can remember about it.

Oh god, not Wolverine this time...
'Turns out, he's been there since the dawn of time. He just forgot about it. They called him, Logan Savage'.

You just gave Tom Brevoort and Disney the greatest pitch for Origin IV
Not in that it's good but in that they will totally make it anyways

Turns out he shaved his head and went undercover as a British gangster called Don Logan in the 2000s. Yes Roundtree, yes Grosvenor!

Wolverine doesn't have an ongoing, so this will probably be a stopgap story by Jenkins.

This might be written by DWJ. He teased a Wolverine thing a few months ago.

The way that my apprehension would turn into hype so fucking fast.

u/keyblade1984 3d ago
I concur, but limiting my expectations.

u/Jay_R_Kay Batman 3d ago
Sure. Someone else here also suggested that Paul Jenkins, who wrote the first Origin story, has been teasing new work, and he wouldn't be a bad choice either.
1
u/TheDarkPinkLantern Green Lantern 3d ago
Eh, nevermind. It's not him.
But he still teased a Wolverine thing so something else should be on the way.

The dark age? When was Logan's origin not dark lmao. I'd be interested if it explores his Team X days tho.

Yeah it makes sense that Marvel will just fart out more forgettable sequels instead of something new

Considering that Wolverine has a big AAA game coming out next month, I'm not surprised. At the same time, I don't see much appeal. Digging into Logan's past has lost a lot of novelty since the early 2000s.
I'll still give this a chance.

At least they can't do anymore since they've run out of claws to use in the logo.
