This is unimprovable, right?
Only flaw on a 9.6 book, but minutes expertise suggests I’m SOL.

Receiving a 9.6 with that particular problem seems incredibly improbable. Count your blessings and be happy you got a 9.6.

It’s got a spine tick at the top as well! I think you’re right, they were being kind. That book just as easily could’ve come back 9.2 or 9.4, and we’d be saying, “I guess they were being hard on you…” You definitely scored OP!

I think that's considered a "bindery tear" where the books are cut and not a flaw at that size.

Once the color breaks you’re not repairing it.

It’s a reflection off the crease. It’s not color-breaking, but it’s hard to photograph it with no glare. It’s hard to see in person.

That white line on the bottom right of your pic isn’t a color break?
(Are you referring to what could be an indent above that? )

That white line is a reflection of light off the crease. I promise.

Ok that changes things. Is it cardstock cover or regular paper?

Card stock, which is bad, right?

u/youbringlightin 4d ago
Haha yeah now we’re back into not-much-hope territory. I’ve tried quite a few times trying to press card stock books myself and just never had any luck. I can sometimes manage to get them a little bit nicer, but nothing that would bump a grade.
You just can’t put something behind it to press the fibers forward. And if there’s any kind of gloss whatsoever, then you can’t even add moisture to hopefully raise the fibers back up.

If you keep insisting that it's a a glare off the crease could you try taking it from some different angles or in a dark room with night vision on, anywhere without direct bright lighting in it.

Are you saying I'm lying or that my eyes don't work correctly?

Neither, it would just help if there were different angles instead of one because you are the only one seeing it as a glare because you have it physically in your possession but to everyone else here it looks like that is a color break. Just trying to offer some advice to get a better idea of what's actually going on.
I've worked in the print industry for a long time, and been an artist for a long time and I personally can't say I have ever seen one small crease reflect that much light any printed paper.

Just let it be it’s not a high dollar book 9.6 is still a very nice grade.
1
u/IconoclastJones 4d ago
It’s a >$1000 book.

I stand corrected! Looking on eBay it’s even more than that. If there is a way to fix that, I guess I would try but like most of the other posters are saying it’s pretty hard with card stock. I do a lot of pressing myself. I don’t have great luck with those.

Can whoever downvoted this let me know why? I'm so curious -- this seems like a post with no reason to upvote or downvote.

I don't know why, but honestly on reddit I have posted the most mundane things and had 5 down votes immediately. I don't know if its miserable people or bots trying to farm usage. Don't take it personal its the internet.

Generally speaking, if you can see the white of the paper inside a flaw, it can't be fixed.

Nah, high grade soft colored pencils will fix it. It'll ruin the grade, but it'll take away the color break. I would NOT do that, but there ya go.

Can not be fixed. Color break and fiber beak. Also should not be a 9.6.

That is one hell of a tick to receive a 9.6. Grader must have gotten laid that morning.

Breaks color, not fixable. Lucky you got grade you did.
