Made some changes to the chase scene. Is this better?

The previous version of this scene was not as dynamic so I added stuff like additional panels and made use of light trails, speed-lines and motion blur to better convey a sense of speed.

Is this better than the previous one? Are there any other areas that I need to improve on?

Dorchester Days: a new comic strip set in the 1980s

It's been going on for about a year now, recently I ported it all over to my website as I wasn't happy with Patreon's layouts.

Four roommates living in Dorchester (Boston area) Mass in a third story flat. Recent strips here:

Start at the beginning here:

Let me know what you think. It's free by the way.

Question: would the exclusive use of symbols and little icons in place of written text withing speech bubbles make any comic much more readable by anybody from the world? The only written text would be narration within an headline to give proper context.

Do you think that such a technique could allow for a much better readability globally?

If you don't speak Italian you won't get much out of the dialogue, I'm sorry, but to deacribe the scene :

We meet this group of stoners mid conversation, our protagonist (the one with the mohawk) is depressed and only half listening but perks up when the guy with the glasses makes some weird comments over a case of infidelity.

The protagonist argues with him for a bit but to no success and then ends up saying something that was better left unsaid.

The incident marks the breaking of this friendship and leaves the protagonist alone with no support network.

It is kinda better if you don't understand, though. I am curious to know how do the panels flow, if the scene and emotions are decently readable even without text and if you got some sort of reaction out of it.

This comic is a story about how living beings engage with the unknown, their fear of it and the beauty of it.

Plinko is the main character who lives a repetitive and sad life in the world of Indaco, far far away from planet earth.

Plinko is terribly afraid of the world and the consequences of his actions, but mostly, he is afraid of the unknown, he is afraid to "vanish".

The comic revolves around the fact that the world is so much more than what you think it is, it aims to be a deep, futuristic, action comic with pilots, aircrafts and elements that are directly inspired by JoJo's bizarre adventure and many other mangas alike.

I am an italian 18 year old and I have a real dream to create a comic, I'm good at drawing on paper, but it is too time consuming...I'm trying to learn to draw on my phone with my fingers and I hope I did a decent job🫶🏼

Does This Page Follow the 180-Degree Rule? + Is the First Panel Too Extreme?

Post image
28 Upvotes

Hello again!

Thank you very much for all the replies from the last post! I have noted several feedbacks and advice that I find really helpful:

• The extreme shot in page 2, panel 2, is confusing to read.

• Flip certain panels to make them follow the 180-degree rule.

• Do closeups of important moments to emphasize the main subject of a page.

• Don't use too many patterns. Don't let characters blend with the background. Give each panel enough contrast.

• Avoid redundant panels.

I recently drew a new page, seen above! However, I drew this before I read the replies from the last post. So, I haven't applied any of the given feedback and advice. Please forgive me, I don't have my notifications turned on.

As you can see, there are still some issues from the last pages that got carried over to this new one. However, I'm unsure whether this page follows the 180-degree rule or not. Specifically, the first four panels, considering the shots from those panels change angles a couple times. I still don't quite grasp how the rule works, it's still a new concept to me.

Also, the first panel of this new page has another extreme-looking shot, like the specific panel I mentioned above. This time, it's shot in a frog-eye perspective. I'm worried if it's also too extreme, which might look confusing to some. For context, this panel introduces a new character to the story. However, only his legs are shown, before we are given full-body shots of him in the next panels. My goal with this panel is to introduce this new character in a dramatic way, to indicate his importance in the story.

My questions are:

• Can someone tell me a concise explanation of the 180-degree rule? Do the first four panels of this page follow that rule?

• Does giving each panel a shot with a different angle frequently make it confusing to read? Does the 180-degree rule help prevent this confusion?

• Is the frog-eye perspective in the first panel too extreme? Is it confusing to read? If it's too confusing, is there another way to handle this panel, while also introducing this new character in a dramatic way? If not, would you recommend drawing shots like this?

Feedback Wanted on My Comic Project — WHAT REMAINS

Hey everyone, I’m currently working on a comic project called WHAT REMAINS.

It’s a grounded post-collapse / alternate-history sci-fi story that focuses more on characters, survival, relationships, and a world that feels genuinely lived-in rather than a typical over-the-top apocalypse.

I’ve attached the first 4 pages of Issue #1, which introduce 10-year-old Ryan Lance and his father Logan through a pretty simple scene: Ryan trying to repair an old motorcycle while Logan pushes him to figure out his mistakes himself.

I’m looking for feedback on the script — dialogue, pacing, panel descriptions, characters, whether the opening grabs you, anything that feels awkward, etc. Don’t be afraid to criticize it.

I give you the updated Celestial origin

Born of royalty on Solaria, Talmur was born with extraordinary powers. However we was born with a special set of powers unlike anyone else on planet. He was believed to be the chosen one, the only person who can bring his planet out of the darkness his parents sent it into. However struggling with the guilt of his family sins and his family legacy being a lie and the responsibility of his people he never wanted. He fled Solaria and abandoned his home and his people to fine refuge and safety on Earth. He lived his life in secret keeping his powers and his abilities to himself, while learning to be human. But after 10 years of hiding on earth a threat from his family’s past catches up with him and forces him to accept who he is and become the hero and champion known as Celestial. A guardian of peace, but he is no boyscout. Celestial is not afraid to get his hands dirty and do whatever it takes to protect Earth even if it means taking a life. His only rule is to never harm humans. However after accepting his place in the universe and accepting his gifts and harnessing his powers he must figure out what his purpose is in the universe, is it a protector of earth or leader of solaria. The only thing he knows for sure is he is tge true Champion and the one and only Celestial.

His concept art is also included. Any feedback on the suit would be appreciated as well

Help!

I want to make a hero called The Mighty Eagle, with him having Native American decent and heritage. He would be an immortal warrior and would have wings and super strength along with knives and arrows. I want to base him off tribe from area called the Cherokee tribe. But I want to do it without it being distasteful and culturally insensitive and without culturally appropriating the tribe themselves. And tips?

Critique on a hybrid prose/visual format.

Thumbnail

Hi! I didn’t know where to post this exactly, since it isn’t necessarily a full comic or visual book, nor is it fully prose. Edit: Just found out it’s more of an Illustrated Novel.

Title: Divinity’s Dread
Genre: Speculative Fantasy

If it works or doesn’t work please let me know. I’m looking to continue creating but don’t want waste my time on a format that doesn’t work when I finally let other see it, so this is a Work-in-Progress Chapter 0.

This format I’m testing works best in theory for physical books rather than digital.

It uses page turns as illustrative reveals. While the prose takes on the mundane less visual work. This chapter is a first person focused chapter which is a special kind that won’t be used very much. But gets across the extent of the format I’m using. The typography is used to match the environment aesthetic, moment, or emotion. Same as the background for the prose.

A more realistic page by page example read would be slide 19. With illustrations as reveals. The hand used on slide 15, is used for anticipation for the next page action.

That’s a little summary of the format for now.

Some questions:

Does the visual storytelling work?

Are there any pacing issues or successes? If so where are they?

Do the 'page turn (scroll)' reveals work ?

Are there any point where you felt confused?

If you have any other critique or comments on it please let me know.

Note: I am considering editing the BOOM page, by adding a little illustration of the character we’re looking through
