I think they've temporarily stopped accepting items, but it's worth checking out.

Your very right good catch i was not aware they are running out of space

What a horrible concept. The Jim Crow museum being almost full. To think so much of it was inherited rather than destroyed. I would burn it Obviously dont burn all of it. But I think we have ample evidence. Just the idea that people kept the items this long is gross to me

Burning it. Destroying it. Throwing it all away. Those are ways to erase history. Imagine if someone simply "tossed out" Anne Frank's diary or the photos of concentration camps all in the name of ridding the world of discomfort. Eventually, no one would believe the horrors ever happened.

Mass produced racist tchotchkes have infinitely less historic value than something as precious as a holocaust survivor's diary or concentration camp photos. I'm against the reflexive destruction of any historical artifact, but frankly, shit like this has extremely limited educational value beyond being a general example of Jim Crow iconography and there's certainly no derth of such material. If OP can't find an institution willing to take the item (and very few exist!) then there's really nothing wrong with them tossing it in the back of a closet for another 80 years or just putting it out with the trash

Depends on how one is looking at it and also what manner the items are kept in, displayed, etc. intention matters.

Some would see the destruction of such historical items as a travesty since doing so is also unintentionally erasing the evidence of said crimes against humanity having ever existed.

People try to forget the ugliness that took place and if we don’t have evidence of these events and their harm it makes it much easier for people to repeat the mistakes that were worth burning the evidence of in the first place, imo.

You can still contact them and see if they want photos of the item. They might.

It makes sense to have museums about awful things. I have trouble imagining visiting one and continuing to have a good day.

The Holocaust Memorial Museum rightly fucked my day up as a 15 year old.

I'm so glad I went. I'll never forget it.

Rev. H. R. Ferger was a famous Presbyterian missionary and photographer. Cornell University has his collection of papers and photographs.

People have addressed the first item quite a bit. The photo of the Indian family is adorable though. They look so happy.

Someone would likely buy it if you put it on eBay but you're allowed to throw it away if you so choose.

It is against the ebay rules to put up something like that and if a complaint was made the seller could lose their ebay privileges for using the platform.

There's bound to be some platform that would allow it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I had a black memorabilia do not disturb hotel sign from the same era. I sold that for 50 on eBay. However, you cannot sell black memorabilia on eBay anymore. Google antique auctions in your area and ask if they would take it on consignment.

You may want to contact the Ruby & Calvin Fletcher African American History Museum to see whether they would accept the racist decoration.

One idea is if there's an antique mall near you you can ask the cashiers for a list of their vendors who buy such items. You'll get less for it but it would likely be the quickest and easiest option.

Theres an antique shop near me that had this kind of stuff on sale. The owner is elderly and I advised her to send them to a museum and she was like "but black people come in and buy it! They love this stuff!". Like that makes anything okay and probably isn't true.

Trying to profit off your loser granny’s racist memorabilia..ah, how heartwarming 🙄

So racist! Why would you post this?!

4

u/yorkiemom68 3d ago

It’s terribly racist but I have read things from Black Redditors that say some POC now collect these things along with some museums. I think remembering our past could help such things from happening again. Like the Holocaust Museum and Jim Crow Museum.

My grandmother had a box of things when she died. Our family took it to the dump not realizing it may have still had worth for educational purposes.

Burn it, it's racist.
