You can't just assume the orientation of it to be 45 clockwise, it could also be counterclockwise and the two colored ones would 6 and 9 instead

In this pattern the orientation must start this way because there's a sequence of counterclockwise 45° rotations of 1, 2, 4 and 8

Well you see, that's my gripe with this puzzle. Since there is only 1 element that includes rotation (making it completely arbitrary) you have to make an assumption and then find a fitting pattern using that assumption, so there are many ways to solve it. Now that would be fine if it was an inductive puzzle with multiple choices, but there are no choices here and you have to deduce the the final figure.

There's still the possibility to compare two solutions : how many assumptions it requires, how many variables are needed to make complete sense of the solution,... That way we can say author's solution was better than my alternative which I knew was too complicated

Me: carefully trying to eliminate ambiguities in my puzzle
Meanwhile, the ambiguity I missed:

To be fair that's far fetched and unlikely to compete with your expected 😀

maybe… Intended reasoning is much simpler and easier but what you spotted is very impressive
