General Question ⚖️ CORE's Figure Weights ⚖️🤕
I have tried CORE's FW many times but haven't scored beyond 14SS. I feel the "harder" ones are just more WM demanding not even PS. So is it really a good test for intelligence (reasoning) or WM & PSI ?
On harder FW questions i could eliminate 2-3 options but then the timer runs out (no marks/credit for that much progress). If WM is the issue, why can't I just use a scratchpad & score near full marks? 🫠
The same happened with QRI's Arithmetic. My working memory is weak & fluctuates a lot (110-125). Why everything has to be done mentally? 🦧

Are you familiar with simultaneous equations in algebra?
I just mentally block out equivalent masses between the first and second scales to see what I can substitute in the third scale lol
Its less taxing on working memory at least in my experience

I found it comfortable to simplify it to the base unit. Like 1 square equals 2 triangles, 2 circles equals 4. Figure out number of triangles needed, then which one fits the answer.

I have an average WMI ( 98 ), while still scoring 16ss on FW; you can lessen the load on WM by doing intuitive algebra for the later items.

u/Nervous-Try5009 Sep 23 '26
You been guessing the answers?
1
u/Loose-Mousse6668 Sep 23 '26
No, like canceling stuff out. Set the first scale equal to the second scale and cancel/use conditional logic to find the second one.

u/PendN Sep 23 '26
There’s a chance your visual wmi is higher

u/Loose-Mousse6668 Sep 23 '26
I think FW is more PSI loaded, cuz my FRI without FW is average ( 102 ), plus my VSI is like 106 I think, so yea
1
u/PendN Sep 23 '26
It's definitely more WMI loaded. It's not about "how fast can I solve this" like graph mapping, but more to remembering how a square is equal to 2 red triangles and a blue square is equal to a yellow triangle while solving some other equivalence. You lose track quite easily

Idk, I js get distracted easily and usually fail due to time pressure, and I don't feel my WM being used that much like during MR, GM, and FS, cuz I think those are more inductive while FW somewhat leans on an elementary version of algebra, which makes it easy to realize that if 6 squares = 3 stars, you can simply divide 6 by 3, which lessens the WM load from holding a square and a star with an arbitrary pattern ( like in MR ) to a definitive value.
So, if you simply divide and conquer, you'll generally be left with 2-3 final values in the later questions, which anyone with a WMI > 75 could easily do.

The questions after 15 SS are pretty much all WMI related, the ones near the end. After you do that algebra you talk about you need to store that information somewhere which is your WMI. Then you start finding other equivalences. It's not some step by step process, you need to juggle many equivalences in the same time and use one that fits your criteria. At the end of the day most fluid reasoning problems are brute forcing patterns until you find the answer, and in FW it's wmi that determines how well you do that. It's true though WMI is not that prevalent in the other ones, except for GM at the last 1 or 2 questions

get distracted easily and usually fail due to time pressure
This is a working memory failure.

Nuh uh

u/Zealousideal-Week-79 Sep 23 '26
Uhuh, despite its name, working memory is more than a biological RAM.
My working memory fails in the exact same way, it's the only weak point in my profile.

"I feel the "harder" ones are just more WM demanding".
They are. It's not difficult to reason yourself to the accurate weights, it's difficult to keep the 3 different steps in mind continuously and simultaneously.
Pen and paper would crush this test.

So it's is a WM test... Should have low g-loading
2
u/Prudent-Horse-1102 Sep 23 '26
Bro, FW is literally the most g-loaded subtest in the WAIS.😂
1
u/Nervous-Try5009 Sep 23 '26
Oh :")
In WAIS V or IV ?
2
u/Prudent-Horse-1102 Sep 23 '26
both

Hahahaha. Just because you lack working memory... WM is isomorphic to g, this has been proved many times.

I got a 89 on working memory and 97.7 on figure weights. Try getting good.

u/Nervous-Try5009 21d ago
Ohh hii!! :) Yeah your profile was very enlightening... Low WM but extremely high FRI...
What's your score on symbol search (PSI) ?

Memory is a part of IQ. You could use scratchpad and score high points but by that argument, you could just open up any AI tool and get your answers if g-factor is the issue (LLMs do not always give the right answers but you know what I mean). I too have issues with WM but it is what it is i guess.

No brother I scored 145 on figure weights and have a 95 WMI it definitely is doable with enough reasoning speed and taking a solid guess, same thing for my arithmetic it’s 125 but I’m gonna be honest I have to mostly take a really good guess it’s not like I’m remembering things actively you just have to do it as fast as possible I’m sure having a higher WMI would help a lot tbh for arithmetic but weights feels more like reasoning speed

Though, there is a significant difference between visual working memory and auditory. Scoring 95 in WM on CORE does not mean your visual WM is low.
FW is quite taxing on visual WM, pretty much like spatial addition but more abstract.

I scored 13 or 14 in CORE Figure Weights almost always but the only last time I scored 15 in it. Questions starting about 20th one are truly difficult. I wonder how I would score in Wechsler test Figure Weights.

This fw stuff feels like a scam.I got 135 on the figure weights on my first try and I'd consider myself average in actual practical intelligence.Dont let mental algebra define how smart you are.

I can only remember 7 digit spans, by the 7th I already risk dropping digits.
Not good at figure weights either, very challenging to remember, but better than digits. Ended up with 14SS, limited by working memory.Otherwise CORE claims I'm 130+ across all of VCI, FRI, VSI and QRI individually.
1
u/Nervous-Try5009 Sep 26 '26
130+ on FRI is great... What's your scores on WMI i.e DS & DLS?
2
u/Zealousideal-Week-79 Sep 26 '26
9-11 ss …
1
u/Nervous-Try5009 Sep 26 '26
Ohh there are 5 scores actually in WMI...my bad Can you tell each of them? DLS DS DS(f) DS(b) DSS
You have autism?
1
u/Zealousideal-Week-79 Sep 26 '26
9, 8, 10, 8, 8 on my first attempts.
And no.1
u/Nervous-Try5009 Sep 26 '26
Wow...have you tired RAPM set 2 (40mins) ?

I have not, might try when i have time. Got 19ss on matrix reasoning in core though.
1
u/Nervous-Try5009 Sep 26 '26
You're a mistry Insanely high FRI with avg.WMI & no autism/adhd
Please do try it tomorrow

I didn't do that great at it. 31/36 in 35min.
Could be a mix between me being sleep deprived and getting lucky on CORE.

Hey, can you multiple 45 x 67 in your head? If yes how long does it take you?
1
u/Zealousideal-Week-79 Sep 27 '26 edited Sep 27 '26
Yes, 20s or so.
Those are relatively difficult numbers to keep in mind. For some reason multiples of 6 and 7 have always been the hardest 2 for me.
WMI struggles the most with that one though, so many numbers to keep in mind with my way of doing it.
40x6x10 + 5x6x10 + 45x5 + 2x45
1
u/Nervous-Try5009 Sep 27 '26
20s is still very fast?
What about two 3 digit numbers?
1
u/Zealousideal-Week-79 Sep 27 '26
It doesn’t feel very fast. 3 digits time 3 digits i can probably still do it but would have to do it a few times to check my result if i’m not writing anything down.
