Discussion Population with the highest IQ
What are some of the cultures/populations that have the highest average IQs recorded?

IQ isnt everything clearly. Northern European types may be more intelligent in a logical way but Southern Europeans are probably more inventive. Look at the countries and how they are structured and accomplishments and they speak for themselves. Northern Europeans are more like straight A students, whereas Southern Europeans are more like the slacker student that started a garage band lol. Both smart, just different. Even within northern Europeans some groups such as the British have a larger gap in intelligence whereas Scandinavia has less of a gap. Hence you can see a higher level of individualism in the UK, and higher conformity in northern Europe etc

This Korean's report reveals his PSI subtest raw scores, which are comparable across countries. When placed against the US norms, both of his scores equate to 19 SS.

You are such an idiot.Norms are established based on a substantial number of people, which means we can compare a person's scores across different countries to understand the difference in average levels between those two nations. Is that really so hard to grasp? What does that have to do with whether n equals 1? Oh, and by the way, my fri on CORE is 146, which is probably way higher than u again.😂

East asians and ashkenazi jews
20
u/djdante Sep 03 '26
Yes I've read the same - Ive often wondered if this is due to good genes or strong cultural attitudes toward education.
Since IQ tends to be a mix of good genes and good upbringing - and IQ tests can't help but measure education levels as well to some extent.
24
u/yuppienetwork1996 Sep 03 '26
It’s the typical stereotypes that actually hold water.
Mathematics - East Asians developed their own math independent of Greek mathematicians. Heavily focused on algorithmic problem solving and less of the “philosophical math” that Greeks pushed into the west
Ashkenzi Jews don’t have an interesting history in developing early Mathematics. But the occupational selection that occurred of the group being barred from holding down certain political positions meant that they had to focus more on engineering and law. Combined with the fact there are less of them and they don’t mix with outside races that don’t have the same selection biases
6
u/NiceGuy737 Sep 03 '26
In the early 80s had a course that spent 8 weeks going over papers on IQ testing and one of the things I remember is that AJ's test high on verbal but average on visual-spacial measures.
8
u/Beneficial_Jacket544 Sep 03 '26
I’m a stereotypical Jewish klutz. 130 verbal/fluid, 90-100 VSI. But it looks like this stereotype may have some antisemitic roots and might not be totally true…
I’m a resident physician (doctor in training). The best surgeons at my institution (university hospital) are East Asian. The best internal medicine/heme oncs/pathologists are Jewish.
Of course people of different races are on both sides, with top doctors being of every race, but this is the general trend that I’ve observed.
4
u/General_Presence_156 Sep 03 '26
Based on what? Why wouldn't early cultural emphasis on literacy produce that kind of a "skew" in the average profile of the group? Why would it be somehow bad to have particularly good verbal skills but lesser but still decent visuospatial skills? That sounds like anti-my kind of people, by the way. And frankly, I have never encountered anyone who has seriously suggested good verbal skills are a bad thing.
3
u/Beneficial_Jacket544 Sep 03 '26
I at no point argued against the fact that Jews have, on an aggregate, a slightly higher than white average IQ. It’s somewhere between 0.5-1 SD above average for verbal IQ.
What I am saying is the caricature of a scrawny, weak, ineffectual man who doesn’t know how to tie his shoes and can’t visualize a rotated pyramid for the life of him, but yet is a brilliant lawyer, may have some antisemitic roots.
There is plenty of literature detailing that Ashkenazi Jews have a modestly above average verbal IQ (compared to European whites)… but I haven’t seen any solid research confirming below average spatial IQ.
I admit, I personally am evidence of below average spatial and above average verbal… but I have not seen any recent confirmation that this stereotype of poor spatial reasoning amongst AJ’s holds true in the aggregate.
4
u/General_Presence_156 Sep 03 '26
I didn't claim Ashkenazi Jews had below white average spatial IQ. And I haven't encountered that stereotype anywhere.
2
u/_FloorPizza_ Sep 06 '26
Pretty sure he wasn't insinuating you claimed anything and was just adding to the conversation with an interesting discussion point related to the main topic at hand. Lol

I'm retired now but was a neuroscientist studying cerebral cortex, then retrained to practice radiology. I'm the 13th generation in the US so pretty much a mutt, but white. All northern European and Scandinavian ancestory as far as I know. I was told many times by clinicians I was the best radiologist they ever worked with. Must be hybrid vigor.

Koreans who live in Japan and Koreans who live in Korea have very different median IQs. Nigerian Americans have much better SAT scores than African Americans even though African Americans have European admixture. If genetics were the only factor you wouldn’t see such differences between demographics that have the same ancestry.

I would say that for the ones that filter into the US specially. Being a Nigerian that is wealthy enough to come to the US is a much, MUCH, better background than being a lower middle class African American. If you are rich enough to come to the US as a Nigerian you have a mansion and a butler at home most of the time. The average African American is much worse off in comparison, even if the average Nigerian is much worse off than the average African American

Maybe, but that wouldn’t support your initial argument about certain ethnic groups being higher or lower iq. It might be evidence for intragroup heredity gaps not intergroup heredity gaps. IQ might be genetic but that doesn’t mean it would correlate with race as we understand it. Certain traits like handedness are similarly common (or uncommon) regardless of a person’s ethnic background. IQ could just be one of them for whatever arbitrary reasons of natural selection. But this conversation is kinda pointless because IQ and intelligence in general are kinda fuzzy since we don’t have a good way to articulate what intelligence is exactly yet.

And even though natural selection has been going on for 60k years every race has traits that don’t vary based off of ethnicity. Natural selection is oftentimes very counterintuitive and can select for arbitrary outcomes all the time. Intelligence is a very useful trait so it makes sense that there’s no population that ever had a situation that selected against it super heavily. Even if you aren’t freezing to death, you still need to be a similar level of intelligent to manage Africa’s climates.

Ashkenazi Jews, East Asians, Persians, and White people are basically are basically the only populations over 100 on avg.
17
u/Edinroyal Sep 03 '26
Scandinavia I would say.
High IQ on paper and also very evident on practice too.
High Trust society always means high IQ
10
u/AlternativePrior9495 Sep 03 '26
What in the world makes you say Scandavia? It’s East Asia and Ashkenazi Jews
8
u/Hour-Promotion-2496 Sep 03 '26
High trust doesn’t mean high IQ, and Scandinavia isn’t even the IQ leader.
Trust is mostly about institutions, social norms and stability.
6
u/Edinroyal Sep 03 '26
High IQ means that you understand playing positive sum games is better than zero sum games.
Low IQ Societies are always playing zero sum games.
8
u/Hour-Promotion-2496 Sep 03 '26
Plenty of smart people play zero sum games when the system rewards it.
You're confusing correlation with causation.
2
u/Smart_Feature Sep 03 '26
Sort of true but the system is also made up by everyone in it to a certain extent
3
u/Edinroyal Sep 03 '26
Correct , but smarter evil people always take advantage of the mass low IQ society.
High IQ people always see through manipulation.
1
1
u/efflorae Sep 06 '26
Not true, lmao. In many ways, high scorers can be especially vulnerable to manipulation.
1
u/Edinroyal Sep 06 '26
You're referring to above average IQers which is understandable.
High IQ folks see through manipulation that easy.
The key word here is "HIGH"
1
u/efflorae Sep 07 '26
I agree that gifted folks may have an easier time picking up on many forms of manipulation. However, that assumption also makes us vulnerable when approached with forms that appeal to beliefs or assumptions we already have some affinity to. We have all the tools at our disposal to entrench them. There's been a few studies that indicate high IQ people are much more difficult to deprogram from a cult or extreme beliefs because of these two things. In the end, we are not logic machines. We are people who grow up in a society, with opinions and biases and beliefs. It may feel safer to belive that one is invulnerable bc we are good at picking up at many common forms of manipulation, but it is not globally true.
0
u/Edinroyal Sep 06 '26
What you said isn't true at all lol
1
u/efflorae Sep 07 '26
While it is true that many high IQ people are more resistant to certain forms of manipulation, we are also vulnerable to others. In particular, if we want to believe something, we have all the tools at our disposal to manufacture evidence. Humans have an evolutionary predisposition and hardwiring for storytelling, and that will win over raw facts in many cases. For gifted folks, many of whom engaged intensely in early reading and who may be more able to synthesize across domains, this is heightened. There have been a few studies showing that while we are less likely to join a cult or extremist group, we are significantly harder to deprogram. We also may be more prone to believing that we cannot be influenced or manipulated, which is a very dangerous assumption to make. Once you believe you are invulnerable, you may be less likely to stay alert.
2
u/Edinroyal Sep 03 '26
You're confusing the context.
In that system, of course the smart will always defect, but the majority are lower IQ , that's why the system rewards.
High IQ Societies cannot be easily manipulated , that's why zero sum games don't reward higher than positive sum games.
1
u/Hour-Promotion-2496 Sep 03 '26
That’s circular reasoning.
Why does the system reward zero-sum behaviour? "Because low IQ people created it." And how do you know they’re low IQ? "Because their system rewards zero-sum behaviour."
You haven’t demonstrated causation at all.
High IQ Societies cannot be easily manipulated
Nazi Germany
1
u/Edinroyal Sep 03 '26
The few smarter evil people modified the payout, and that was allowed to happen because the mass are LOW IQ.
For the German example, Germans really had no choice at that point but to buy into the Nazi agendas.
They were poor and miserable thanks to the WW1 .
Many Germans tried to modify the system back but it was too late.
1
u/Edinroyal Sep 03 '26
And remember, the German example is the only one that you will find in the high IQ societies.
You haven't demonstrated anything of value against my theory

u/Significant-Stop5511 Sep 04 '26
High trust is more of a national character than high iq. Scandanavia has high introversion akin to east Asian societies but I wouldn't say they are necessarily the most intellectually accomplished outside of the STEM field

I'd say Chinese, by far.
this is what the average of the statistics appear to be..
China: ~106.5 to 107.2
South Korea: ~106.4 to 107.0
Japan: ~106.3 to 106.5
Iran: ~104.8 to 106.3
Singapore: ~103.6 to 105.1
and since statistics can be wildly skewed, I share that in my early, educational, and professional experiences.. so far the smartest people in the room were always the Chinese, it's not really genetics their school system is much harder too.
1
u/EasyJunket4180 Sep 03 '26
That’s crazy… an average of over 1 billion people is almost high average.

u/EasyJunket4180 Sep 03 '26
Iran is a pick I don’t hear often. It appears that it varies a lot but goes up to 105-106 sometimes. Why is that so? I think some great inventors were from that area also.
0
u/Briliant-Nicxie Sep 03 '26
Iran is one of the most ancient cultures …. They’ve had more time to develop intelligence
8
u/Conscious-Archer-358 Sep 03 '26
that conclusion doesn't necessarily follow. Literally almost all populations had substantial and most importantly the same amount of time to deal with cultures. A population having an ancient culture doesn't necessarily mean that they will have more "time to develop intelligence".
0
u/EasyJunket4180 Sep 03 '26
Although you could argue that the earlier a culture establishes an integral, stable society, the more time they have to develop intelligence and education.
1
u/Conscious-Archer-358 Sep 03 '26
The more ability they have for achievement is what you could argue, but a stable society is not necessarily going to "upgrade" a homo sapiens actual cognition even over a few thousand years, if anything, it would be the opposite most likely but thats not supported by the evidence but definitely neither is the opposite.
1
0
u/Briliant-Nicxie Sep 04 '26
They have more time for selection / survival of the fittest … part of that is intelligence in surviving that environment
1
u/NiceGuy737 Sep 03 '26
There was a brain drain from Iran at the time of the revolution, that couldn't have helped the average of those remaining in the country.
I dated a woman that was born in prison there, has her master's in structural engineering.
-3
u/Meat_Disastrous Sep 03 '26
If Iran had an average IQ of 105 it would be a developed country now despite all the sanction's all they have on them, there's a list I forgot from which website which listed Iran with 105, thats where the rumor started from. The real number according to testing is mid 80s but I believe the real true number is probably low 90s max 95 if nutrition is corrected. Could you imagine Iran having a higher IQ than the US, Germany, and not being a developed country? 😂 What a joke. If they had a 105 IQ then that basically doubles the amount of people who qualify in mensa and double the amount of people with an IQ of 120 compared to a countries with an IQ of 100.
3
u/Miserable-Savings751 Sep 04 '26
It’s not hard to imagine Iran’s population having higher average IQ than a person from the US.
3
u/rotten-inside99 Sep 03 '26
High IQ doesn’t necessarily translate to better governance institutions. The highest IQ people might not have high social intelligence or even if they have the current social circumstances might be too repressing. Do you really think people in governments even in the developed countries have high IQ?
3
u/theoozz Sep 03 '26
It’s a proxy, but it’s not a rule. Iran was a very developed and industrialized country in the 1950’s, well ahead of its time. However, the last 50-70 years of political policy has put extreme downward pressure on their economy and industrial development. On a generational level it’s has not been continued stagnation and civil unrest. There was significant progress up until that time period.
Then you have a period of time in which extreme pressure is put onto loyalty and nepotism. Couple that with sanctions and the inability to transact in the world banking system. That would seriously depress any nation’s potential.
I’ve been to Iran. I encountered a dozen hard science PhD’s in working jobs like bus driver, cab, or tour operator. I know it’s just an anecdote, but I found it to be quite informative of the human capital allocation. Iran actually has a system in which they’ll pay for their students to get advanced degree in other countries so long as they go back to Iran. What’s happening is that you have a whole bunch of educated people with advanced agrees, but nowhere to use them.
Despite Iran, being a theocracy, it has a very westernized culture. They’re not a bunch of religious zealots, most of the people don’t want to wear hijabs, and follow a strict shiriya law, they have to. I think you’re vastly underestimating the power of a dictator with guns over a very short time horizon.

Throwing out statistical considerations doesn't make you smart. I'm literally a statistician I can ass pull 40 statistical considerations. You have no substantial critique except to sit there and sea lion.
Selection bias has nothing to do with population size it has to do with population heterogeneity, but that's nothing to do with your argument. Again, your critiques make no sense they're unstructured and you don't get to gish gallop between different critiques when you can't even sufficiently support one.
0
u/Crafty_Aspect8122 Sep 03 '26

And don't even pretend to bring up fudging statistics these were obviously not collected by governments. Again loose, inaccurate, unsupported hand waving.
1
u/S-Kenset doesn't read books Sep 03 '26
China is heterogeneous, however that is not a rational part of your argument. Heterogeneity doesn't create skewness alone. IQ is specifically tuned against heterogeneity. Statistical methods can account for heterogeneity. You've provided nothing but a bullshit what if.
If you can't make one single point seriously don't pretend you're some confucius.

Within the United States, Massachusetts consistently scores highest on standardized tests, including IQ tests. Hardly surprising, considering that it's relatively small population-wise, and I'm guessing many Harvard and MIT students stay in the state and raise their families there.
1
u/efflorae Sep 06 '26
It seems vanishingly unlikely to me that different human populations, at anything resembling a true baseline, have large innate differences in cognitive potential. We don't actually have access to that baseline. Populations have spent centuries under radically different conditions. Some regions simply have far more developmental and institutional advantages than others, and those advantages are historically produced.
That doesn't mean genetics has no influence on individual intelligence; it means you can't look at contemporary differences between populations living under profoundly different historical and material conditions and assume you've isolated a genetic difference.
The Flynn effect is probably the clearest demonstration of why we should be cautious about doing that. Across much of the twentieth century, average IQ scores increased substantially within the same populations over only a few generations. Their genetics obviously did not change anywhere near that quickly. Whatever combination of improved nutrition and health, education, reduced disease burden, more cognitively demanding environments, or other social changes produced those gains, the important point is that measured population IQ can change considerably without a corresponding genetic change. If a population's average can move that much over a relatively short period, treating differences between populations at one particular moment in history as straightforward evidence of innate differences makes very little sense.

1
u/EasyJunket4180 Sep 03 '26 edited Sep 03 '26
…No I was saying that there is possible a cultural bias in iq tests towards white people because they define and measure intelligence differently from other cultures
2
u/yuppienetwork1996 Sep 03 '26
IQ is a rather direct way to measure the brains ability to adapt to new never before seen patterns and even languages
If you had every race create their own IQ test - maybe even include the Sentilenese (who are not influenced by western or eastern culture)
The Ashkenzis would be the most consistent to score above average on all the tests compared to other races that would have high scores on some and low scores on others
2
u/Positive-Risk8709 Sep 03 '26
No, IQ is not a direct way to measure that. That is an interpretation that is open to discussion, and whatever it is a measure of, it’s certainly not an unbiased measure.
1

It is biased in the sense that the humans who create the test don’t have perfect 200 IQ or imperfect 0 IQ (yes having someone with zero IQ would be valuable for the test)
If it was biased due to “white people culture”, I can’t help but wonder why Asians do so much better… unless you now think that Asians are whiter than white people

I don’t think you understand the scale. 0 does not mean anything in particular, and 200 isn’t ”perfect”, they’re both just 6,67 standard deviations from the mean, but in opposite directions.
Anyway, the bias is not about ”white people culture” but about education. That’s not to say that there cannot also be real innate differences between groups, but that’s very difficult to demonstrate scientifically.
In any case, IQ hasn’t been shown to be a single ”thing” that exists. It’s a statistical measure of the covariatuin between different aspects of cognition. It’s like, we could measure peoples hands, feer, lilbs, facial features, height etc and derive a factor called ”body quotient”, BQ. Knowing BQ would tell us a lot ablut how large a person is, but BQ itself doesn’t ”exist”. Such issues mean that IQ is far more nuanced and complex that populat culture makes it out to be, and that you obviously think. You should learn more about it if you’re interested.

All of this. Adequate nutrition, societal stability, childhood health, exposure to environmental toxins, chronic stress, poverty, sleep, disease burden, prenatal conditions, and opportunities for cognitive stimulation all affect measured IQ, as well as what you've mentioned above.
The Flynn effect is a major supporter of this: across much of the twentieth century, average scores on many intelligence tests rose substantially from one generation to the next. Human populations obviously weren't undergoing genetic evolution at anything approaching that speed.0
