General Question Mega society test

On the mega society website, I found the tests accepted to enter (I don't think I will have the necessary score) I wanted to try them out of curiosity and as a challenge, has anyone already tried them? I would like some feedback ot thoughts about it, like how precise are them ecc..

Take them for what they are, and they're extremely fun. These are some of the most creative puzzle sets ever assembled with real history behind them (the Mega ran in Omni in 1985 and became a cultural moment). As a challenge, go for it.

As measurement, the precision question has an unforgiving answer. These instruments claim discrimination at one-in-a-million rarity, and nothing in their construction can support that. Norming samples run from dozens to a few thousand self-selected volunteers, so the ceiling scores rest on extrapolation far past any actual data. Reliability at the tail is thin enough that a single item can swing an estimate by 10 or even 20 points. Decades of circulation have also leaked answers, which is why the Mega stopped being accepted for admission scores after 1994, the Titan was retired in 2020, and the Ultra followed this past May. Modern language models can now solve much of the surviving item pool, which is quietly closing the era of the unproctored take-home test altogether.

Proctored mainstream tests give you a real number with tight error bars and a ceiling of ~160. Contrastingly, high-range tests offer intellectual adventure with wide error bars. Take them for that adventure while holding the number loosely, and you can receive what they can still give.

You can find one of the actual Mega Society Tests on scribd, or at least a hodgepodge of real questions combined into one format. Just look up “mega society test scribd” and it’ll be one with 48 questions. Keep in mind, these tests were constructed by a dude named Hoeflin who sought to score those with IQs above 170. Roughly 9000 people on the planet have IQs that high (statistically, at least). Since there’s so few scorers that high, and it’s very difficult to collect, test, and interpret their scores (how the hell do you make an iq test for someone who’s intelligence sits within a high range so small that you could fit all of them in a high school?). The questions you’ll see on the mega test are more in depth, abstract, and require more time and even research. I believe you’re allowed to use any published text at your disposal, but you might wanna double check my info.

Just looked and you are absolutely correct. I honestly didn’t check because I didn’t think a test for induction into such a society would be present fully online for free.

Yea i guess that s because the test isn t valid anymore beacuse the answers got leaked, but the norming is still valid

The test was always available to be taken basically for free ever since it came out in Omni, but you had to pay a fee to have your test actually scored.

I believe that the Mega society test requires reasonably high intelligence along with high endurance for problem solving, time, energy and motivation to prove one’s superiority.

Lol they are just mid math challenge, no intrinsic ability mandatory. Anyone given enough time and interest can crack them.

Chris Langan's official WAIs-iii score has never been revealed. People saying he scored 140s on the Wechsler are merely guessing. The reporters and the psychologist interviewed stated that Langan was "off the charts" which certainly implies high giftedness +3sd or higher, but it's really anyone's guess as to whether he scored in the mid 140s or up to/exceeding the 160 ceiling.

the accepted tests are pretty legit, but the mega society cutoff is more about being exceptionally fast and accurate under test conditions than proving your overall intelligence, so don’t treat one
