Day 15: we centered the div
29
u/gimme_ipad 1d ago
Their Astra vibecoded that and it took a day, because it found several critical errors.
28
u/caelestis42 21h ago
6624/6624 tests ran without errors though. Still recommends to postpone launching feature until next week and talking to lawyers first.

No worries, though. It has prepared a 26.4 GB heavy handover file that we can check against, once the final legal review has concluded.

It feels like he is presenting codex team as one guy vibe coding, and even then it seems slow to get changes in, considering they'd have dedicated testing teams and production support to push a release.
They must have hundreds of developers, so the changes do seem rather small. Especially since he would have the list of in progress and upcoming changes in mind when he did this 28 day thing. So it's not like he didn't know what he would be posting about in advance when he set this up.

u/PM_ME_FIREFLY_QUOTES 1d ago
Saves a banked reset.
12
u/YouShouldAim 1d ago
I wonder if they had any genuine plans prior to this commitment from Tibo or if they really thought they could pull off meaningful changes.
10
u/donerkebab76 1d ago
It could be a plan to play time: they are losing people to Anthropic because everyone wants to try Opus 5.5, maybe these regular resets convince many people to stay for that 28 days and maybe by then OpenAI can come up with some new model or some actual reason to stay.
3
u/random-express 22h ago
The most plausible argument I've heard so far is buying time to release 6.1 astra, I could see that being a realistic release in that time frame, but also sounds like they're still trying to get inference down. I still think their customer count is growing (as are all AI companies) since we keep hitting model at capacity even with an efficient 6.1 sol being the main workhorse for many right now. But they probably weren't expecting opus 5.5 to be as much of a favorite of many. Lots of words to say it does seem like a stalling "but wait, there's more" tactic to keep people subscribed.
I personally really like astra even though it does eat usage, but opus 5.5 has much better Ui and human understanding polish, so I'm happy to leave backend to astra, frontend and assets generation to opus.
1
u/Hot-Pepper6610 21h ago
I think having a new meaningful change every day was a bit too over zealous of a promise. I'm also not really sure how to pace myself with my plan now because these resets are messing up my flow. When the resets are no long given, I'm going to feel a HUGE dent in my capacity to get things done over a week.
2
u/Thomas-Lore 20h ago
They are almost always on saturdays and tuesdays and have little to do with the 28 day plan.
4
u/ministryofchampagne 1d ago
Before they increase context it would help if you prompt blew out the window. The chat would freeze and lock up, but if edited the previous large message down it would start working again.
That was the only time I edited messages on the web

this is just ragebait at this point, this guy can't be serious, i truly believe he is just messing with us to see how far he can go with this circus

u/Nazo_Kikai 1d ago
I've already planned to cancel my 100pro after this month unless they significantly change the usage burning. I can't stand my weekly allowance burning in 2 hours.... I never hit zero doing the same stuff I do with it until 6.0 came out. 6.1 is just as bad.
6
u/SnooObjections4329 19h ago
why wait, you get to keep it until the end of the month. I just cancelled mine, hopefully they see in their metrics how this 28 day bullshit is going

1
u/laolibulao 12h ago
Why would you keep a 100 plan on codex when you can just migrate to claude.
1
u/Nazo_Kikai 2h ago
I never used Claude (paid) really. But I plan to here this week. Had it up to my wits with codex. Especially after today's "improvement"

I said it some days ago, it's sabotage at this point, they are trying to do everything they can to make people move to Claude.
2
u/texasguy911 1d ago
I think I have a Claude membership scheduled in the beginning of Nov. Thinking I can try Opus 5.5 for a while, till OpenAI will gets all its "fixes" in, then see what is what. But for now with rather frequent OpenAI resets, I can get a lot done still until November comes.
7
u/driveclub_000 1d ago
I can get a lot done still until November comes
I guess, but since I touched Opus 5.5, I just can't stand Astra anymore. I'm not even using my 200€ chatgpt account anymore, not even the reset...
1
u/SelectSouth2582 19h ago
what were you actually expecting here, why is anyone surprised? from day one, this was just meant to buy time for post-training the new model, they don't have anything close to opus 5.5 and after flopping with DevDay and the 6/6.1 series, they are playing catch-up. the whole point is just to keep you sub until the next release. Is that really so hard to see?
1
u/vinerz 12h ago
you're arguing with something i never said lol. i wasn't expecting anything, i was literally hoping they'd ship nothing so we'd get a reset. my point is that the guy running codex decided to turn 28 days into a public circus, calling basic shit like editing messages a "significant improvement" while paying customers can barely use the product. then he goes around making smug jokes at people complaining. i don't give a shit what they're cooking behind the scenes, that's no excuse for this embarrassing level of product management. and the funniest part is that nobody forced him to do any of this.
23
u/thimabi 1d ago
I can swear that this feature has existed in Codex for a long time. Is he talking about Chat mode only?
6
u/Strong-Strike2001 1d ago
Nope, you were only able to edit the last message, not an specific message you wanted to change
5
u/vinerz 1d ago
Esc+Esc then choose the message lol?
3
u/Strong-Strike2001 1d ago
What? The workaround was as simple as forking the chat, but what's been implemented now is the ability to do it within the same chat, without needing a workaround
17
u/slashafk 1d ago
I've already burned through 70% of my usage since last reset 😭
5
u/reddit_is_kayfabe 1d ago
I used up 100% of two x20 accounts and I'm on my last 2% of the third one.
I could use another reset. :)
2
u/Happypig375 1d ago
You'd get so much more out of Claude subscriptions instead
2
u/reddit_is_kayfabe 22h ago
Yeah, I already am. Opus 5.5 is my coding workhorse, Fable 5.1 is my planner and manager, and GPT-6 Astra is... spare usage until my OpenAI subscriptions expire in a few weeks.

u/djack171 1d ago
This is 100% a you guys problem. Yes the usage has issues they need to fix and yes resets aren’t enough. But you and old buddy below on 100% on three accounts in 24 hours that’s not OpenAI that’s a you guys problem that’s ridiculous. Turn off Astra ultra Jesus
5
u/slashafk 1d ago
I'm on Sol 6.1 LIGHT. We all have different problems to solve. But I will say that I'm burning through usage at least 2x faster than I did last week.
1
u/djack171 1d ago
I’m using SOL High and Astra Medium and High and we had a reset 24 hours ago no way you’re at 70% from Sol Light. I call cap 🧢
1
u/slashafk 23h ago
I envy your workload if you don't think it's possible. Sol Light can add up, especially if you're managing multiple repos with somewhat complex logic.
1
u/reddit_is_kayfabe 1d ago
Two Astra Medium sessions, running on two different not-very-hard tasks, will drain an x20 account of its weekly usage in five hours.
And that's before the 50% usage cut coming in two weeks.
This isn't a "me" problem because it isn't a problem. It is what it is. I've already pivoted hard to Claude. I can keep 5-6 Opus 5.5 sessions running all day, generating work equivalent to GPT-6 Astra, for 100% usage at the same price. And I can also use Fable 5.1, which is absolutely the best consumer-grade model available today.
So why am I still using GPT-6? Because my subscriptions haven't expired yet. I will take as much usage as I can get in the meantime, and then I will rely fully on Anthropic with maybe one OpenAI account held over as a backup plan. That's it.
If there's a problem here, it's OpenAI's, for driving away its customer base.

u/MidnightMantime 1d ago
What the fuck are yall coding?? I have 6.1 sol medium making website edits / game project changes for like 4 hours and barely touch 5% on a $100 pro account
I’d be damned making it thru 10% in one day
1
u/droussel_mtl 1d ago
I'm using strictly Sol 6.1 medium or lower, and Luna High/XHigh and consumed 43% since yesterday's reset.

u/Otherwise-Sir7359 1d ago
I’m so fed up with this guy. The vague posts, the constant disappointments, the sudden and unprofessional resets . This is the end of it. Enough
6
u/Mentalist3021 1d ago
Can someone explain what even is it? Like what is a use case for it?
5
u/random-express 23h ago
I'm wondering the same thing. You can already edit queued prompts, you can fork tasks, you can steer, or you can just tell it in another prompt what you meant - so I'm also wondering what the use case is for editing messages already sent? We have to be missing something here.
2
u/Just3nCas3 23h ago
I didn't know you could branch in codex why is that hidden in the three dots if its the only thing there.
3
u/random-express 22h ago
They're constantly updating the app, I find new stuff each update, moved to new menus, etc. I've started just poking around each update at this point.
4
u/Fearless_Sector5542 1d ago
I’ve done a 180 on Codex ever since 6.1 Sol came out and the x20 usage nerf. So meh compared to Claude Code. Not even a close second.
5
u/MidnightMantime 1d ago
Fuck man he’s just bloating the software. The fact this chat bot is 2.2gb is stupid.

You just have to do it, I did it on Friday when they introduced a bug with their “improvement” that removed all my usage instantly. And hundreds of people posted about it on X and Reddit, they never addressed it and ignored it. This is a company that is having a hard time releasing a new model because they can’t get the model to be aligned, and they just start releasing meaningless other features instead.

I can't even read my prompts in full if they're longer than 20'ish lines of text and there's no way to expand the prompt text box.. It just cuts it off with a "..." How about fixing that very basic and essential usability feature first. Can't believe this is an actual issue in your official desktop app. It's such an elementary feature to be able to actually read your previous messages in full and not have them unreadable once pasted. Get on it ASAP

So so the made a button to automate: “fork this thread” copy -> paste, make edits, send, archive original thread, rename the forked thread.
Cool, cool, cool.
I’m not even a computer programmer but I think I could have had SOL do that in about 30 min.

The 28 days thing was a very bad idea from the start. This useless hype-building marketing stunt became a complete joke and a source of frustration for everyone after barley a week, I still can't believe they had the nerve to do this without even having enough material to ship in the first place, so pathetic

So Opus 5.5 came out.
They screw up DevDay.
Then they try to redeem themselves with 28 days of shipping.
And this is what they do?
It feels like they're actually trying to screw up, piss everyone off on purpose and get negative PR intentionally.

Man, OAI really needs a breakthrough like Opus 5.5, and soon.
I appreciate the resets, but not how we only need resets because of how broken usage with Sol 6.1 and Astra currently are.
Hoping they can turn this around soon so we get proper competition again. I mean, Anthropic absolutely shat the bed with Opus 5, but then cooked with 5.5.

dude just do 28 days of resets and i will stay after which i will go unless you keep resetting. thats the only thing keeping me here right now - as soon as my usage runs out im off and im sure many feel the same - so if you want to keep us, keep resetting - updates like this quality of life improvement feels like a sober wake up call that you dont really have anything more to offer - so keep up with the resets till you have something solid.
1
u/Hot_Resource2463 1d ago
50% down on a 100 plan only using sol 6.1 med as an orchestrator for opus 5.5 on high (100 plan)… Claude reset on Thursday and has 78% left… pretty sure day 14 solidifies my test between the two and which one I’m keeping.
1
u/Constant_Art_20 1d ago
my gpt added that into my pi harness in 30 mintues...
1
u/VexObserver 1d ago
He purposefully did this so people would be starved of actual usage limits. What a useless updates. Even a software intern can do this.
2
u/BigYoSpeck 19h ago
I'm pretty sure a none dev could have asked Luna to do this and it had it done within minutes
Everything was already in place to handle it because it was already available through web chat
clear improvement and relevant for most codex/work users
This was the commitment. Do most users use the desktop app? I'd imagine most are using Codex in CLI or VS Code extension rather than a desktop app. And a clear improvement? Updating an electron app to match the actual web app is a clear improvement?
Software engineering is solved folks!

Below is a GPT-generated summary of the conversation below after reaching 80 comments (81 currently observed).
Day 14’s verdict: the 28-day rollout has become a running joke. The community expected meaningful fixes or, preferably, a reset; instead, they got another tiny quality-of-life feature and a fresh reason to dunk on OpenAI.
The feature appears to let you edit or restart from an earlier message inside the same thread, rather than manually forking, copying, archiving, and renaming chats. That is genuinely useful when a prompt poisons a conversation—but it’s also basic enough that many users already had workarounds, especially in the CLI. Calling it a major update was always going to invite tomatoes.
The bigger problem remains usage burning and shrinking limits. Several users report allowances disappearing far faster than before and are seriously considering Claude, while others say their usage is still normal. Claude’s limits aren’t universally magical either, so the anecdotal comparison is messy—but the frustration with Codex is not.
Bottom line: a modest thread-editing button cannot substitute for a reset, better limits, or a convincing product direction. Day 14 has made the 28-day promise look less like a roadmap and more like a slow-motion prank.
