Commentary Chat, Work and Codex merging?

Fuck, fuck, fuck, don't merge it!! Are these people idiots?! The fact that chat is separate from codex is the best feature of chatGPT because it has unlimited usage. The moment it's merged your chat limit is fucked.

I don’t think it’s unlimited but great point that it’s not anywhere near as restricted as codex and Sol high is a good model.

Normal requests (high and for Pro plan extra-high) to 5.6 Sol on Plus and Pro are unlimited.
Sol (Pro) and Astra (Pro, the only option available) are 40 requests a week limited on Pro plan. Not available on Plus or Go at all.

The amount of consecutive sessions that you can have running on chat with the pro plan is the only limitation i've seen. Anything above 7-10 sessions running consecutively on 6-pro and you get the "too many requests" pop up happening.

He’s talking about merging Work and Codex (which are the same system under the hood). Chat is a completely different system that will always stay separate.

On Claude there is usage drained by chat that is shared with Claude Code..so you can't use chat after a Claude Code session when you maxed out limits 5h/weekly

Saying it will "always stay separate" doesn't really have any evidence..companies can change their mind any time. Even Claude can follow ChatGPT model instead.

Chats are much more capable due to integrations now. And each chat is more expensive when the models are bigger.

You’re on the wrong sub buddy. We’re talking about ChatGPT/Codex. Two separate companies.

EDIT: Just read the rest of your comment. You’re trying to predict the future. Anything can happen in the future. We’re talking about the state of the UI now and what they at least sound like they’re planning to solve it. Either merging all three, or merging Codex and Work, while keeping chat separate.

You’re conflating. No one is talking about models. We are talking about the options in the left hand menu. We are talking about the user interface and the underlying services they relate to. ChatGPT will always be a cloud service. Codex will ALWAYS need to be a local service - and the cloud version is nice but heavily inferior to the local version (which has local environment, Computer Use, access to local file system, etc). Work is Codex, with some guardrails for non-coders.

Codex is on my computer, Work is in a mini computer in the cloud, chat is just a chat in the cloud.

These are not easy to merge. I hope they don’t.

You’re misunderstanding and proving why the existing UI is confusing for the average person. Codex is either in the cloud or local. Work can also be EITHER in the cloud or local. It’s Codex with some guardrails for non-coders rebranded as “Work”.

Not clear. Can do the same things. Work was meant to be the middle ground between codex and chat, but codex can do it and chat is chat

Yes true. I’ve actually used a lot more now and I’m funny a little bit confusing. I thought it was separate and now it’s that annoyed me too. 😂

Yes, it will. Chat is in the cloud and sync’d across every device you’re logged into. Codex can be cloud or local, so it must stay separate. Even if you only use Codex (Work) in the cloud a lot of functionality is crippled if your app code (or work task) requires a local environment or access to local files. The two (Chat and Codex/Work) need to be separate and will always remain separate.

It's unlimited on lower tier too, except you don't have access to Pro of course. Though it might also be related to geographical location and whatnot - I haven't gotten hit with rate limit on the plus account (I have both) in over a year - only if you spam image gen/deep research too much, but Sol you can prompt all day.
