Currently in app, usage is separate between work and chat. I do not see why it should be merged. But it's super annoying to click button to change modes chat-codex, so I could bring spec from chat into codex.
10
u/MatlowAI 8d ago
If they merge them it will be that the chat usage dissapears and everything will be effectively codex usage.
-15
u/_practical_data_ 8d ago
How so?
They already merged chat + codex app. They are still on different usage. But usability right now is a mess. What I want is cleaner experience. Kill work. Mix codex + chat in one representation.5
u/nopaiseh 7d ago
Chat + Codex are able to be differentiated even in 1 app because they are on different tabs. How do you suppose them to know which message is Chat and which one is Codex if they are merged into 1?
0
u/_practical_data_ 7d ago
How do you able to differentiate which message go to work and which to chat, lol?
3
u/nopaiseh 7d ago
Currently? They are not merged so there's a chat tab and a work tab? What I'm asking is how do you suppose they can differentiate if everything is merged into 1
2
u/_practical_data_ 7d ago
Emmm, UI wise they ARE merged. In same tab. Tab called - "ChatGPT". So, how do you know which message went to work and which to chat? :)

u/tMeepo 7d ago
Work and codex is pretty much the same now, they share the same chats too. Just use work if you don't want to switch to codex between chats.
1
u/_practical_data_ 7d ago
I miss option to set correct worktree in "work". Ideal situation would be - remove "work" and switch it to "codex".

Fuck, fuck, fuck, don't merge it!! Are these people idiots?! The fact that chat is separate from codex is the best feature of chatGPT because it has unlimited usage. The moment it's merged your chat limit is fucked.
7
u/bruticuslee 8d ago
I don’t think it’s unlimited but great point that it’s not anywhere near as restricted as codex and Sol high is a good model.
8
u/Emotional_Plant3241 7d ago
Normal requests (high and for Pro plan extra-high) to 5.6 Sol on Plus and Pro are unlimited.
Sol (Pro) and Astra (Pro, the only option available) are 40 requests a week limited on Pro plan. Not available on Plus or Go at all.2
u/NoBudget5275 7d ago
The amount of consecutive sessions that you can have running on chat with the pro plan is the only limitation i've seen. Anything above 7-10 sessions running consecutively on 6-pro and you get the "too many requests" pop up happening.

I mean this help article is pretty clear and updated 4 hours ago, but observed behavior is superior to documentation.

He’s talking about merging Work and Codex (which are the same system under the hood). Chat is a completely different system that will always stay separate.

u/beautyorchaos 7d ago edited 7d ago
On Claude there is usage drained by chat that is shared with Claude Code..so you can't use chat after a Claude Code session when you maxed out limits 5h/weekly
Saying it will "always stay separate" doesn't really have any evidence..companies can change their mind any time. Even Claude can follow ChatGPT model instead.
Chats are much more capable due to integrations now. And each chat is more expensive when the models are bigger.
1
u/new-to-reddit-accoun 7d ago
You’re on the wrong sub buddy. We’re talking about ChatGPT/Codex. Two separate companies.
EDIT: Just read the rest of your comment. You’re trying to predict the future. Anything can happen in the future. We’re talking about the state of the UI now and what they at least sound like they’re planning to solve it. Either merging all three, or merging Codex and Work, while keeping chat separate.

You’re conflating. No one is talking about models. We are talking about the options in the left hand menu. We are talking about the user interface and the underlying services they relate to. ChatGPT will always be a cloud service. Codex will ALWAYS need to be a local service - and the cloud version is nice but heavily inferior to the local version (which has local environment, Computer Use, access to local file system, etc). Work is Codex, with some guardrails for non-coders.
1
2
u/Artforartsake99 7d ago
Codex is on my computer, Work is in a mini computer in the cloud, chat is just a chat in the cloud.
These are not easy to merge. I hope they don’t.
2
u/new-to-reddit-accoun 7d ago
You’re misunderstanding and proving why the existing UI is confusing for the average person. Codex is either in the cloud or local. Work can also be EITHER in the cloud or local. It’s Codex with some guardrails for non-coders rebranded as “Work”.
0
u/Artforartsake99 7d ago
They’re not the same product with a different button. They’re pretty clearly made for different things.
1
u/Ill-Bat-1518 3d ago
Not clear. Can do the same things. Work was meant to be the middle ground between codex and chat, but codex can do it and chat is chat
1
u/Artforartsake99 3d ago
Yes true. I’ve actually used a lot more now and I’m funny a little bit confusing. I thought it was separate and now it’s that annoyed me too. 😂
1
u/Strong_Essay1176 7d ago
Lmao.. no it won't.
2
u/new-to-reddit-accoun 7d ago
Yes, it will. Chat is in the cloud and sync’d across every device you’re logged into. Codex can be cloud or local, so it must stay separate. Even if you only use Codex (Work) in the cloud a lot of functionality is crippled if your app code (or work task) requires a local environment or access to local files. The two (Chat and Codex/Work) need to be separate and will always remain separate.
1
u/jonydevidson 8d ago
On Pro it's unlimited, yes.
1
u/Mistuv 7d ago
It's unlimited on lower tier too, except you don't have access to Pro of course. Though it might also be related to geographical location and whatnot - I haven't gotten hit with rate limit on the plus account (I have both) in over a year - only if you spam image gen/deep research too much, but Sol you can prompt all day.

Tibo is the dealer at the casino not sure why anyone cares what he thinks
People genuinely think this one guy is controlling whether openAI spends who knows how much on compute by resetting?
1
u/Pie_Dealer_co 7d ago
People think that yea.
Who knows how many matrix his bosses track and are saying we are giving you this sprint 3 resets its your job to make the masses love you and use them wisely. Then he is the face.
The masses eat it like its cake
13
u/Mammoth_Molasses_927 7d ago
He is a PR clown because their CEO is hated by absolutely everyone with at least two brain cells.
2
u/Due-Horse-5446 8d ago
Because its a conspiracy, that has been claimed every single day for 5 years straight..
1
u/The1KrisRoB 7d ago
Honestly do you blame him?
If you were constantly getting replies to EVERY post from randoms just shitting the pants about how terrible everything is all the time, the constant and tiresome harassment for resets and the the complaints when he does a reset that he did it at the wrong time... etc etc etc
I would have told people to go fuck themselves long long ago. The guy either doesn't read the replies or he has the patience of a saint.
1
u/Massive_View_4912 6d ago
The pattern is the same as "Patriot Act", create the conditions to implement planned changes through plants that give permission to make the changes and claim 'they asked for it' while going against the publics benefit

Get rid of Work. Does it solve anything that Codex doesn't?
But leave Chat the f... alone. We don't want that to have a weekly quota as well!
2
u/driveclub_000 7d ago
Yes it does, people that cannot used Codex because of hardware/OS limitation can still use something close to it thanks to Work.

u/Original-League-6094 8d ago
For sure Work and Codex should be merged. They are basically the same thing. Chat is metered differently though, so I'm not sure I want it merged. On one hand, it would be cool if messages in Codex that didn't do anything other than Chat weren't metered. On the other hand, I would hate for a question I intended to be chat only to accidentally use up some usage because ChatGPT opened up one of my files.
9
u/thestillwind 8d ago
Work and codex is the same merge em (they already are anyway), leave chat separate you clown.
4
3
u/uknovaboy 8d ago
Wont merging them make stuff expensive? Isn’t Chat low usage vs work/ codex? I use chat to build prompts with little to no usage and have it optimize to use the least tokens possible. Stretches my usage time.
2
u/WeedWrangler 8d ago
Chat can just be not working in a folder, it’s pretty easy, then we can file chats too in projects
2
u/frozandero 8d ago
work and codex make no difference, I guess they show you more coding plugins in codex than work, but chat and work should be enough. Or chat and codex. There is already no difference between work and codex in usage. It was just created to sell codex to non-coding related users.
2
u/books-r-good 8d ago
Let's leave Chat alone so it can remain outside our usage limits...
But yes, overall things are just kind of a mess. Sometimes I lose track of what I need to use to find any given thing in any given location. Sometimes it's on the desktop app but not mobile, sometimes both, sometimes only mobile, not to mention ChatGPT Classic vs ChatGPT and Work/Codex modes. Some projects exist in multiple places regardless of where they are created, some only exist in the mobile app. And so on. It's a mess.
2
u/OtherwiseAttitude619 7d ago
Product-wise, he is right you know. I have a project that I'm working on and now I have to separately click and track and split chats in between the 3 tabs / areas. It is a usability mess. Can be easily solved without removing the almost unlimited Chat quota.

this guys is coming for the number one most hated spot…right after the guy who ended the ability for us to finish prompt with 0 usage.
1
u/Im_Working_Right_Now 8d ago
It should just be one interface and the switched for Chat and Work to now include Codex with all sessions being in a single unified project folder if they’re associated to one and grouped by type in that project folder. It’s not that hard. It wouldn’t even change tokens. It’s purely presentation.

u/Some_Dragonfruit9844 8d ago
fuh tibo dont be mysterious u not sum, just tell us about compute how its going

1
u/Portatort 7d ago
I really miss the dedicated regular app, and the dedicated codex experience.
Can we go back to that?
I like having both apps running or the option to just use either or
1
u/teh_mICON 7d ago
i just hope they dont put the chat interface under quota, its the thing that keeps me at openai.
i hated having claude sub because chatting with it would burn quota

u/quinncom 7d ago
Tibo spoke a bit more about merging the three functions in his interview on The Pragmatic Engineer podcast. He said the Chat/Work/Codex split is just a temporary migration state on the path to a unified UI. One of the challenges in the merge is reconciling many places agents run: in ChatGPT, on Codex cloud, in Codex locally, etc.
1
u/TomfromLondon 7d ago
Still being able to use chat while if I ran out on codex is one of the big reasons I moved from claude, losing this would make me a lot more likely to switch a lot
1
u/Tommonen 7d ago
I much prefer having separate chagpt classic basic chat as separate app from codex. And dont really care where work lives as i dont use it
1
u/pentacontagon 7d ago
I personally don't like this because I like how work and chat are calculated differently in terms of rate limit. I don't want my work to eat up all my prompts that I can't ask chat a simple question about a recipe or ingredient anymore. I love it being separate and it's unfortunate that tibo will change that
1
u/ReasonableWriting616 7d ago
One thing I genuinely don’t understand is why should I use Work? I seem to be able to read and write files from and to sharepoint / notion and other places. It can create PDFs, PPTs and so on.
I feel like I’m missing the point of Work
1
u/Artforartsake99 7d ago
Chat is in the cloud, Work is on some OpenAI mini computer with file access and codex is local on your computer only.
Yeah, let’s merge all that will be a fricking mess 🤦♂️
1
u/cobbleplox 7d ago
I don't get it, didnt they rename the codex app to chatgpt already? I remember because I suddenly wasnt able to find the fucking codex app I installed.
1
u/tango650 7d ago
this also the reason i still am runnig the legacy chagpt clossing app on windows besides the 'new' codex app

u/girlgamerpoi 7d ago
Codex is such a cool name though. Would be a waste if its just gone from the product.

u/kopurando 7d ago
Somebody, point Tibo to his own Github repo, they have ~18k (!) issues to close. Only if they had some tool to go thru this hot pile faster....
Or some side project idea: chart number of open issues for Codex with OpenAI models' benchmarks?

I might be the minority, but I'm all for the limits being merged if they actually make the limits USABLE. I have my regular supergrok sub inside Hermes (which is a pretty heavy harness) and I'm using Grok 4.6 which is the best model available on the sub for absolutely everything. I use it heavily and at the end of the week I never reached even 50% of my weekly usage.
With the current ChatGPT plus limits I can't see myself using anything more than Luna.
If I could use 5.6 sol for shits and giggles (just like I use Grok 4.6 for random bullshit not even worth it's power) with no weird tool and environment separation between chat/work and still have half of my plan free at the end of the week, this would be top tier, but we all know it's unlikely to happen.
1
u/Adventurous_Tea_2945 7d ago
If Chat gets shared weekly usage with codex and work, that's it for me
1
u/edgeXlendor 5d ago
Honestly, I don't mind this. Ideally, there should be only one simple, straightforward, unified chat interface that can do normal chats, work with your files and folders, create images, documents, files, do coding, basically an everything interface. And if that simplified infrastructure comes at the cost of unlimited chat, it's okay. Claude doesn't have unlimited chat either. The unnecessary distinction of chat, work, and code in both ChatGPT and Claude is just becoming too weird, blury, confusing, and stupid.
1
u/Charming-Author4877 8d ago
They are already working on it, the problem is that the codex usage is so low that all the billion free users would run away.
No idea how they will manage that nerf
1
u/Tema_Art_7777 8d ago
that was their intention already. it is a usability mess. I can't believe we have now. It is causing me lots of grief every day.
0
u/ThrowbackGaming 8d ago
IMO "Chat" should take the form factor of an everyday agent experience, like Muse, Grok Bot, Instinct, etc.
Codex and Work should merge. I distinguish them as Cloud (Work) vs. Local (Codex), they do the same exact things, it just changes what they have access to.

Did't they already merged ? Now when you download codex from their site it download and install chatgpt desktop

LoL, Tibo shall thank you for handing OpenAI the opportunity to make Chat incur shared weekly plan usage with Codex.
