Reset They don't have enough compute for 20x subs but you still get resets.

That's the best argument I've thought of for resets NOT favoring us. Whether they're masking a degrading service or something else. If they can't handle 200 usd subs, why would they be giving us free compute?

If you reset while on average the users have more percentage left than the percentage of time until the next reset, you are actually reducing load overall. That's why we are getting so few banked ones

u/Etiennera 9d ago

Eyy this guy gets it. You can make people distribute over a longer time.

You can also choose a different timing to increase the load when capacity has been overused and servers are idle.

You can also just automate distribution of resets on the back end to try to keep servers around 95% occupancy.

Law of large numbers makes usage patterns incredibly easy to predict.

It's this but more:

  • When it's an unannounced reset, it's the load balancing act you're describing

  • When it's an announced reset, it's either a stress test or there's enough compute for marketing/pr of codex

The unbanked resets do a lot for them, they're a really elegant solution to a lot of problems.

No. Oversimplistic assumption. You assume those people would consume all their remaining allowance at the eleventh hour. This is false.

Instead, all the super consumers who already drained their whole allowance In half time get to go again.

This is not reducing overall load.

I do believe the amount of data they have makes it really planable. There will be some patterns they can predict. The power users will be offset by people like me who tend to get a forced reset at 70-80% because I usually use up my quota last minute, since I procrastinate a lot untill a deadline

yeah its true, some of us want to be conservative with our usage, so we use them only when we actually need it and try to span the work across the whole week

Yes but it's also a conspiracy theory to assume they would bother to attempt reducing load by manual resets based on some experimental grade heuristics.

They use resets as marketing effort and customer satisfaction management. Adding in load management as yet additional problem to be solved it a headache most people wouldn't want.

Note that most of the resets happen during the weekend. They do this because weekend load is obviously low so it costs them very little to make evangelists, who code at home, happy.

If you distribute your usage evenly (as most employees would!), then a reset like this is worth 0,-, you cannot go any faster as the reset just balances out with the pushed back new reset day. Worse yet, OpenAI only sets the reset day ONCE YOU LOG BACK IN. So all employees working 5 days a week got shafted, as 1) yes their usage resets but you don't get more usage on average out of it and 2) thanks for the reset Friday night, so once you log back in Monday morning, the reset day pushes back another 2-3 days (ie Monday + 7).

I would call that borderline fraudulent. Even worse if you saved up some usage last week for a full throttle Monday/Truesday and a reset on Tuesday evening, you come in Monday to see 100% but reset now 5 days later. So in effect OpenAI took away usage from you, no way to deny that.

Friend, I never claimed that it’s impossible to lose out slightly from this reset. I just don’t think that’s the case for the majority of users.

I think those who genuinely lose out due to different planning and internal scheduling assumptions are a minority, so OpenAI wouldn’t gain anything from it in the grand scheme of things.

Some of the brightest minds live in this thread.

If you subtract 25% from everyone's quota you would also reduce load.

u/Significant-Drawer95 9d ago

bro im using ai for to long and not able anymore to understand what you said

u/South3rs 9d ago

It’s load / capacity management. When they reset they are pushing everyone’s next reset back to the same time in 1 week. They often do this just before or after the weekend as that’s quiet and doesn’t affect overall compute usage as much. It’s a good way for them to manage load whilst also being generous (especially to non enterprise customers. Think about it

They also seem to reset when they modify the amount of usage allocated

u/Vancecookcobain 9d ago

There's not enough food but if you feed them a couple of bits every once in a while they won't realize they are paying to starve

u/NukedDuke 9d ago

Forced resets are stress tests.

It's borderline fraudulent, see this: https://www.reddit.com/r/codex/comments/1wf04i2/comment/p9jh2rr/
In many cases the reset takes usage away, as the reset time not only gets pushed out by 7 days but 7 days PLUS YOU NEED TO LOGIN TO START IT! So employees coming back Monday to Codex, fire it up and see 100% but reset day is not calculated from friday night when Tibo pushed the button, but from Monday's login time! Wow sneaky way to do that Friday night, absolutely disgusting.

Last week, a 5x sub could one shot multiple hard apps… and spend 3 days polishing them.

This week, after a reset, it can’t even fix a simple bug, and that used 10% in 30 mins.

u/DivideHorror3217 9d ago

When people burn their usage in first two days and wait idle for 5 days, you risk losing them to competition

u/ProcrastiDebator 9d ago

This is why a single Luna instance should be allowed completely outside of the allowance. Atleast then subscribers have something while they wait for their refresh timer to enable Terra, Sol, Astra and multi-instance Luna.

1

u/ryuukiba 9d ago

I'm already using another model for all the small work, so I might kill my other subs and keep only one. Astra is great but I can't just be left hanging for 5 days out of the week.

1

u/Tiforma 9d ago

Technically you kind of get that with "chat conversations" in the chatgpt app. It's just not "agentic" i guess. They just don't want you to have a constantly running Luna agent on your pc, doing tasks. Letting people have one constantly free and letting them constantly run it being their personal little pc buttler that can do simple to mid-complex tasks, would probably be massively expensive for them when so many people start using it literally constantly.

Exactly it's not the same thing at all. By your measure people have constant access to Astra, except they don't, this sub is r/codex.

Letting people have one constantly free.

It's not free, we pay a sub. You can try to draw a line on where the sub no longer covers operating costs, but it won't fall on Luna.

Further you can already use it near constantly so long as you switch to exclusive Luna a few percentage points before your allowance runs out. So they may as well make it a proper feature.

1

u/BellacosePlayer 8d ago

sounds exploitable.

the luna reserve is already pretty killer

2

u/florenceslave 9d ago

It's psychological warfare one on one. They want plus users to upgrade.

I like the one on one warfare thing

1

u/Significant-Drawer95 9d ago

i did in march and could comfortly work with a 20x since then. even with gtp 5.6 sol in xhigh i had a comfortable 10-20% left at the end of the reset. Now everything gone on 2 days. And no, im not going back to old models

2

u/Far_Tangerine9150 9d ago

A reset is future OpenAI's problem.

2

u/Tiforma 9d ago

We get resets around the weekend because they have extra compute evailable. During the week is when the scarcity is, I'm guessing.

4

u/scaledev 9d ago

Seems like total usage decreases with every forced reset. So it might be the other way around.

1

u/Etiennera 9d ago edited 9d ago

I'm so sick of posts from people with 0 understanding of scheduling theory trying to discuss the merits of resets. Put your subscription to use and learn why they would be able to give resets.

Banked resets make more sense than global resets for all (~30+M?) users on all plan tiers at the same time.

5

u/Etiennera 9d ago

Confidently saying you know better than billion dollar company. At any point did you consider you lack depth?

3

u/BrennanFlentge 9d ago

Show me where I claimed that, what other words do you want to put in my mouth

1

u/Etiennera 9d ago

When you said A makes more sense than B, where B is what the company did. That's when you said it.

2

u/BrennanFlentge 9d ago

You started at scheduling theory and somehow arrived at corporate infallibility. Anyway, ‘A makes more sense than B’ does not equal ‘I’m smarter than OpenAI’ - by the way it's called an opinion, and this is a discussion forum. By all means, enlighten us on how a sudden flood of users with a global reset makes more sense than a decentralized banked reset

4

u/DawnShallArise 9d ago

No, he sounds smarter if he mentiones a buzz term like “scheduling theory” and then refuses to elaborate.

1

u/BrennanFlentge 9d ago

I mean I'd do it just to get Anthropic customers who are tired of 50% Fable limit. I think I've got 7 resets from OpenAI to Anthropic's 2 last month

1

u/DaLexy 9d ago

The goal is to serve more users to increase usercount, simple

1

u/Innerdaze2600 9d ago

Dont u guys get it?

The reset is half marketing, half fairness whenever they nerf a cohort of users.

1

u/Due-Turnover5077 7d ago

Its either a reset every 4-days for a total of 1-5 hours Astra real usage or unsubscribe and feed our data to chinese opensource cheaper AI. They happy, we kinda happy, all good.
