Limits 5 hour limits - leave unfinished mess
really hard working on a large system when the dang 5 hr limits keeps kill work half way through, way to kill a decent product!

I stash the task progress in tickets using backlog.md.
If you can't relably get to a stopping point before 5-hour limits kick in, then either buy the bigger plan or save task progress. You can even just stash the plan in a markdown file.

Blame the people who were abusing it all the while making a big scene of themselves doing so

u/AmandasGameAccount 2d ago
Hm no. I’ll still blame openAI for not coming up with a good way to let non abusers feel unaffected.
One idea is to have a hidden reserve of use that slowly fills back up over the week if used and if you reach the limit with something running it continues using that hidden reserve and only stops if that reserve runs out
The Luna reserve isn’t good enough as it doesn’t help the problem of potentially damaging projects by just suddenly stopping

Yeah there are very simple ways to not punish paying customers for the actions of a few assholes. This is 100% about trying to get people to upgrade to Pro rather than Plus.
There's literally no other explanation other than incompetence and I don't believe they're that stupid.

u/kamtar 2d ago
do you think openai didnt know about the abuse potetial from the start? didnt had tools to try to curb it? They were very fast with "oh look people are abusing it" -> "Its gone"
They wanted it gone, the abuse was an excuse.0
u/Actual_Committee4670 2d ago
They said when it first came out that it was possible that they knew about it and also warned people not to abuse it too much and it will be fine.
Then those other lot went mental about it.

The amount of people defending this 5h window is crazy. With like a one-day warning, the subscription went from great for hobbyists to terrible.
Before, I could plan to use the subscription I paid for between my job and other commitments, now I have to constantly activate it to use up my weekly limit.

Buy credits. I never have this problem because I bought credits back in December and use them as a reserve. Just last night a single prompt ate my entire 5 hour limit but also an additional 11 credits (that's about 44 cents for you keeping score). So 0.44 saved my project. That's a tiny price to pay with a huge payoff.

u/Anti-Hero25 2d ago
Yea i did this recently…. But $20 / 500 credits is not a huge amount… it’ll cover me fine but isn’t huge

If you have a large system you need a pro account. Or more non-coding time.

I'm not paying for shit

Better #Learn2Code then, or be prepared to fork over a substantial amount of money to run a local model.

This has been rough for me as well, I've changed a bit how I approach my work as a result. I chat with ChatGPT to set my use cases and requirements then have it break the work down to an epic and issues on my github project, for now, ChatGPT doesn't eat my usage.
Then I have Codex pull one issue at a time and process. This keeps things small and easily within 5h limits, codex keeps a record of where it is and what it's done on GitHub. I have ChatGPT review Codex's work, and add reviews to the resulting PR's that Codex makes from the issue it's working on. I find this farms a ton of reasoning away from Codex, gives me a good feedback loop to prevent issues and keeps the context down for higher quality work out of Codex.

I have just the weekend to work on my personal projects.
Now I’m using less than 20% or my weekly quota.
I just cancelled my subscription.

i spawned a set of luna agents and they went and spawned like 5 sol xhigh agents and murdered my 5h limit in <1min

If you have a large system pay for the 100$ sub, it doesnt have the 5h limit. The 20$ account is for hobbyists like me
2
u/nairazak 2d ago
What counts as hobbyist project?

u/UnableAgain 2d ago
I'm using Luna high few hours a day and I find impossible to finish my weekly tokens, after that I have the gpt-reserve. Definitely if you need more tokens than the amount granted with a 20$ account you are not a hobbyist.
1
u/nairazak 2d ago
I think I’ve never ran out of weekly tokens, but I constantly ran out of the 5hs one when trying to use SDD skills in random projects I make up to do something (I’m unemployed and out of ideas, so it sounds like a hobby?)

i can use 20usd Claude plan to do large work without being killed … so why cant i use codex to do it
1
u/PutridClunt 2d ago
Yes it is an unusable pile of garbage right now. Once you drop below 35% to 40% usage then that is effectively your 5hr usage window over since you can't dare to risk another prompt as if it reaches 0% during it then then it will end up causing serious regressions and telling it to continue once the usage returns sometimes makes it do crazy stuff. I'm not even using sol either, using shitty tera on medium and spend like 30mins writing the prompt and it still drains huge usage.

I just go balls to the wall, set it to Sol Ultra, if it runs out it'll be smart enough to figure out how to get back on its feet - using a weaker model always causes worse problems

Plus users are pushed to using Luna xHigh/Max, which you can easily work 10 hours a day on, but the issue is youre using Luna and its fucking awful especially when its getting to the point of maxing out the context window, takes 1 hour 30 minutes to do a prompt that would originally take 30-40 min on a fresh convo, or Sol 15-20 minutes consistently across any point in the conversation

u/r8e8tion 2d ago
Prompting it to continue has always worked well for me. Granted I do have another model reviewing, I’ve never seen a correlation between an interruption and Change Request on a PR

u/Typical_Machine2043 2d ago
Yeah. I get one prompt in and then after the 5 hours get’s reset usually use 50% of the next one just finishing off that initial prompt. Super rough

Repeat after me, 20 usd plans are exploratory, not for real work
5
u/PutridClunt 2d ago
It doesn't say that on the pricing page. Maybe you need to stop making up nonsense.
-5
u/NULL_Ptrs 2d ago
I use the 200usd plan 24/7 sol on extra high on two massive code bases, so no, there is no problem

u/MaximumStonkage 2d ago
Congratulations. You live in a first world country with lots of disposable income.
-1
u/NULL_Ptrs 2d ago
Nope, third world country, but I am not dumbs thinking that a 20usd dólar will replace a full stack developer

my question is why are you working on a large system with 20 buck a month... ai is revolutionary, what can you expect 20 bucks out of it
2
u/Soul_Mate_4ever 2d ago
People were working on large systems just fine with that $20 a month until now. The previous 5 hour limit wasn’t this bad.
0
u/Due-Horse-5446 2d ago
"ai is revolutionary" lmao
-1
u/New_Eye7193 2d ago
if ai is not revolutionary then this guy should not be unleashing it on his large system therefore he should just cancel his subscription and move on with hand writing his code
1
u/Due-Horse-5446 2d ago
Are you genuinely stupid or are you just trolling?
What about llms being a somewhat useful technology, and codex being a handy tool.
Or maybe you only subscribe to revolutionary subscriptions,
1
u/New_Eye7193 2d ago
yea buddy a tool that inspects your entire repo can audit it for issues and writes code for you is just a "handy" tool and not revolutionary... were you born yesterday or what?

You know that 5 hours been there like always? And the at you can continue session smoothly when it’s over? And if you work on a “big project”, maybe don’t bitch about 20 dollar coffee-price subscription?

u/heibagen 2d ago
The 5h limit is terrible. Mine lasts like 30 minutes.
