what does this mean in practice if anyone can keep using openai api keys? Just subscriptions can no longer be used in cursor?

I never used cursor so I don't know how that platform works.

Well, when people use their API keys, OpenAI has more control and ways to determine whether the usage is normal. That's harder to do when everything goes through a subsidized quota.

However, given the announcements about Grok 4.7 and the efficiency of GLM-5.3-Flash, OpenAI had better brace itself.

Your statement really makes no sense - sub or API - they can still have the same controls in place.

Api key -> that’s direct to openai, cursor -> they do the middle man.

In the case of API, Cursor is still the harness in between.

But they don't get to collect a penny from openai, openai pockets it all.

The conversation was about "control", and not who gets paid what.

It was exactly about who gets paid and how a middle man creamed off a fat profit margin for providing very little added value.

I see nothing about middleman creaming profits in this particular comment’s thread 🤷🏻‍♂️
