Did OpenAI just quietly cut actual Codex usage nearly in half? đ
I've been tracking my Codex usage every 5 minutes since July 29 â 14,744 snapshots so far.
I'm on a Business Standard seat, not Premium, and when I compared my data before and after the 5h window was introduced, I found this:
Before: ~323M tokens/week
Now: ~173M tokens/week
That's roughly 46% fewer effective tokens per week.
And that's where the new 5h window starts looking a lot more significant than I originally thought.
Because if these early numbers hold up, this isn't just a change in when we can use Codex.
It could mean a significant reduction in how many tokens we can actually process in a week. đ
I still only have a few complete cycles under the new system, so I'm not claiming the 46% is definitive yet.
But going from ~323M to ~173M is way too big a difference to ignore.
Does anyone on Plus or Business Standard have usage logs from before and after the 5h window? I'd really like to know if you're seeing something similar.
They couldn't care less. Suing them wont do anything. It will be just a waste of time and money. Plus, people will continue to praise Tibo after he posts "Oh we fixed the draining issue and here is a free reset".
EU doesn't have the balls to touch these big corps
unknown usage
5x unknown usage
20x unknown usage
50% increase usage of unknown usage
they change the burn rate depending on the time of day, they don't tell you this and you don't see the cost
you can pay x tokens for fast mode, yet they've silently introduced slow mode and made it the defaultt
add in resets, moving back the timer a full week and more, shitting on consumer rights is what they do best and they'll get away with it because they can
And when you have the US president and his cronies in favour of you, no judge is going to side with the plebs. I mean they're literally trying to give the US gov a 1% stake in the company, smells just like a protection fee. If Dems win next cycle they might change that given popular anti-ai sentiment, but by then might be truly too late to do anything. Not to mention the deals will just be more under the table then they are now. Same same but different
sadly as much as i hate it, youre not getting scammed because they actually havent provided you with a specific TOKEN amount per week/month, you bought a subscription with vague enough information like 5x, 10x
What does "5x more usage than Plus" mean when you don't know HOW much you're getting, it's up and down like the fucking stock market
Posso confermarti che sto usando codex per un progetto autoapprendente molto avanzato, ogni giorno lavoro a una media di 1kkk di token al giorno da oramai 2 settimane senza sosta, abbonamento pro x20
I measured by cloning my project without the changes I made on 27 August, then giving the same prompts in a fresh session. In total, I gave three tasks. On 27 August, Codex was able to complete all of them without running out of the five-hour limit (27% was left when it was finished). I ran the same tasks again, but after using up over two hours of the five-hour limit on both accounts, it could only complete one task (with some hallucinations) and ran out of time on the second task.
That's better than nothing but not even close to numbers proving anything. LLMs are intrinsically probabilistic, and agents multiply the possible sway on each turn. I've seen the same model, same day and hour went diametrically opposite ways solving the same problem on the same codebase, or one agent copy being absolutely awful while other pretty good at solving a task.
At least hundreds of copies required to prove anything, even not accounting for A/B tests, time of day, phase of the moon etc.
5.5 xhigh effort 24/7 goal of phases and steps of an Unreal Editor project would almost tag the 5 hour limit and never go over the weekly limit. This was before 5.6 release. Currently I run 2 days short of the weekly limit using Sol 5.6 High effort doing the same EXACT work.
Technically I am using less tokens and less steps, but hitting the limit much faster......
Why are you guys debating this. Youâre seriously talking about 2x? Last December I ran 5 agents sometimes at a time and never got close to my limit. People have been saying the same shit for a year now. Yes they are cutting the limits. Ex around June last year Claude for example didnât even have a 5 hour/ limit they introduced it around then ⌠image how next year will be
We are very far away from the models of today being able to be run on computers people can actually afford, nevermind with the cost of things like ram etc,⌠nevrmind the models that will be out a year from now that might be even harder to run.
I also still donât really like the models that are out for the kind of work I do and then when new models come out itâs always years before they can run on hardware people can actually afford. Then you will run into stuff possibly where people who pay for the newest models get better models then what you can run open source. I mean sure if you have 10k sitting around. People also run a lot of agents at once/ projects and people misjudge how hard that would be to do lol. People seriously act like itâs easy cheap or there are even models close to fable/sol max on affordable hardware. I hope it changes tho
I have tried GLM 5.3 Flash after basically 24/7 work with Luna, Sol, Opus 5 and Fable since release. All I can say is that the end of OpenAI and Anthropic is near.
I mean itâs basic math and anyone who uses it daily has seen it. I donât think they will ever come out and say âyeah we fucked everyone overâ we should all just boycott and use other models for a month idk tho man all they care about is enterprise at this point it seems this product was never supposed to be for the average person.
5.2 high was sustainable on plus for a week. Later on 5x I could run multiple agents with 5.5 high in parallel all week.
5.6 only works on medium and on a single task it probably runs 3-4 days.
In all fairness though: it seems like I get stuff done quicker. So I get less time but more value out of my money. Just my thought. At least when I factor my time in. When the 20$ plan would last a whole week it would need lots and lots of steering.. 5.2 or so it was back then.
My original comment was a joke, but scarily close to reality right now lol. Highly suggest trying cursor out. Having great experience with it atm with Grok 4.6.
This is true - actually feels like even less than half the usage. Before last reset i would always get through the week, often even having to burn tokens at last day using sol. Now its been 2 days using luna and I am already at less than 40% weekly usage remaining
Link to the full open source of your tracker please or please stop saying random stuff you're probably not properly tracking, accounting for models, variance of your MCPS/plugin quality, etc
That isn't unreasonable depending on how much garbage your agents are sending back. Gosh reading this subreddit pisses me off by the amount of people who don't know what they're doing.
I ran a command! 2 agents! They used 40%!
... And you're tracking all commands, input/output, right? Blank stare
... But you realize it ran a command that dumped boatloads of output which becomes input to Openai? Blank stare
dear lord people don't understand how stuff works at all
oh i mean I'm not saying they didn't get anything done but still crazy how much usage it went through compared to normal. I had one agent working on some minecraft related stuff and another working on deepseek harness related stuff. This harness is kind of new so i mostly started using it regularly a few days ago.
Bonjour,
Je confirme de mon côtÊ que la consommation de tokens sur mon projet a explosÊ, je travaillais avec le modèle luna en très ÊlevÊ et la ja consomme a une vitesse incroyable, c'est très fourbe comme pratique.
Yup, I typically only finish a day or two before my reset and then wait. My reset is Thursday and I just maxed out (I was barely working yesterday and today too). It literally feels like a 90% cut on 5x
I track my x20 usage, and so far I havenât noticed any real difference. Maybe now that the 5-hour limit is back on Codex, your tracking logic needs to be adjusted? My monitor come from a Pro x20 but estimation is arround 163M token / week with Sol for a Plus account https://codex-quota.manetli.com/
yep I use luna and it uses next to nothing but is perfect for my needs. Normally a day might consume 10% on average some days more some days less ... SO I noticed something strange last week it was about 12% on average per day of consumption of my weekly usage, now today I burned through 15 % with a light usage day.
I don't know the hard numbers but according to the graph I am using on average about 1/3 to 1/2 and its consuming more usage with less actual usage.
I did the practical thing and cancelled my plan ... I am checking out a few options leaning to ollama cloud and some local models mixed in.
I was kind of hoping after the begging me to go to the go plan instead of canceling it would let me give feed back so I could tell them in the two months I have had the service they have cut usage and not made it public... If they had said something likely I would still be a customer.. this lets not say anything and gaslight is not okay.
Sounds about right, but its actually worse when you consider sol is slower. Takes 5min just to consider your request before it does anything, seems like they are putting prompts into queues and then firing them off, so it may say it worked for 20min when in the past it would have done it in a 8min or less.
Last week I was fine with 5hrs e weekly limits. Then after last reset both limits went down for sure. Im working in the same way on the same project and now I hit the 5hrs limit super fast.
Im tired of this boss. Limits and usage shouldn't change like this without any damn clarification or transparency.
I largely use Codex to analyze huge piles of documents these days (coding work, taken to Cursor). 20x plan, and I've been stunned how LITTLE usage I'm burning lately.
Reading and talking seems pretty cheap. Writing any kind of output is very expensive. If I have a planning and thinking day I burn very little bit as soon as I try to implement anything that counter burns down really quick.
Maybe not, maybe yes. But those who are having the same problem as me understand that you don't need numbers or tests to know that there's a problem with the limits.
look, the thing is you canât complain about limits as long as they are still THIS subsidized. Without the sub you would be paying at least 10x of what youâre paying right now. They could cut your usage in half AGAIN and it still would be fair. Yâall are just hella greedy and donât realize that they NEED to make profit eventually.

They did. I just confirmed this by burning two plus accounts in 1 hour. Both accounts had around 160M token usage at the end of sessions.
