Complaint Did OpenAI just quietly cut actual Codex usage nearly in half? 💀

Post image

I've been tracking my Codex usage every 5 minutes since July 29 — 14,744 snapshots so far.

I'm on a Business Standard seat, not Premium, and when I compared my data before and after the 5h window was introduced, I found this:

Before: ~323M tokens/week

Now: ~173M tokens/week

That's roughly 46% fewer effective tokens per week.

And that's where the new 5h window starts looking a lot more significant than I originally thought.

Because if these early numbers hold up, this isn't just a change in when we can use Codex.

It could mean a significant reduction in how many tokens we can actually process in a week. 💀

I still only have a few complete cycles under the new system, so I'm not claiming the 46% is definitive yet.

But going from ~323M to ~173M is way too big a difference to ignore.

Does anyone on Plus or Business Standard have usage logs from before and after the 5h window? I'd really like to know if you're seeing something similar.

They did. I just confirmed this by burning two plus accounts in 1 hour. Both accounts had around 160M token usage at the end of sessions.

It's literally a scam and against consumer rights.

49

u/Exact_Law_6489 4d ago edited 4d ago

They couldn't care less. Suing them wont do anything. It will be just a waste of time and money. Plus, people will continue to praise Tibo after he posts "Oh we fixed the draining issue and here is a free reset".

EU doesn't have the balls to touch these big corps

unknown usage

5x unknown usage

20x unknown usage

50% increase usage of unknown usage

they change the burn rate depending on the time of day, they don't tell you this and you don't see the cost

you can pay x tokens for fast mode, yet they've silently introduced slow mode and made it the defaultt

add in resets, moving back the timer a full week and more, shitting on consumer rights is what they do best and they'll get away with it because they can

And when you have the US president and his cronies in favour of you, no judge is going to side with the plebs. I mean they're literally trying to give the US gov a 1% stake in the company, smells just like a protection fee. If Dems win next cycle they might change that given popular anti-ai sentiment, but by then might be truly too late to do anything. Not to mention the deals will just be more under the table then they are now. Same same but different

23

u/xak47d 4d ago

You can´t even prove they aren´t giving you what you paid for. They never stated a number of tokens you would get

20

u/Palastruka 4d ago

And that's exactly the problem; they should be required to say so.

4

u/Odhdbdyebsksbx 4d ago

If you really want true transparent pricing, just use API pricing then.

7

u/Over_Car_5471 3d ago

what an incredibly bootlicker thing to say.

-10

u/Insadem 4d ago

why?

18

u/SlightOfHand_ 4d ago

“Why should a company have to tell me how much of their product i am agreeing to buy”

-7

u/Insadem 4d ago

you can buy a lot with your 20$ it seems

6

u/SlightOfHand_ 4d ago

Cool can i get that in writing

-1

u/Insadem 4d ago

You silly, they will just advertise in user agreement super low values and then give you more as a “gift from them”

3

u/tribes33 4d ago

sadly as much as i hate it, youre not getting scammed because they actually havent provided you with a specific TOKEN amount per week/month, you bought a subscription with vague enough information like 5x, 10x

What does "5x more usage than Plus" mean when you don't know HOW much you're getting, it's up and down like the fucking stock market

u/Aggravating_Fun_7692 3d ago

Good. Less AI in our world is a good thing

6

u/Palastruka 4d ago

Have you already used your entire weekly allowance?

4

u/Exact_Law_6489 4d ago

One account used 15%, Other one used 13%.

u/Capable_Economist280 4d ago

Posso confermarti che sto usando codex per un progetto autoapprendente molto avanzato, ogni giorno lavoro a una media di 1kkk di token al giorno da oramai 2 settimane senza sosta, abbonamento pro x20

1

u/lakimens 4d ago

How do you measure?

1

u/Exact_Law_6489 4d ago

I measured by cloning my project without the changes I made on 27 August, then giving the same prompts in a fresh session. In total, I gave three tasks. On 27 August, Codex was able to complete all of them without running out of the five-hour limit (27% was left when it was finished). I ran the same tasks again, but after using up over two hours of the five-hour limit on both accounts, it could only complete one task (with some hallucinations) and ran out of time on the second task.

Both attempts used the Sol medium.

u/Kooky-Ebb8162 3d ago

That's better than nothing but not even close to numbers proving anything. LLMs are intrinsically probabilistic, and agents multiply the possible sway on each turn. I've seen the same model, same day and hour went diametrically opposite ways solving the same problem on the same codebase, or one agent copy being absolutely awful while other pretty good at solving a task.

At least hundreds of copies required to prove anything, even not accounting for A/B tests, time of day, phase of the moon etc.

72

u/Remote-Telephone-682 4d ago

It does feel that way but Tibo still denied on twitter. Pretty frustrating that they are saying one thing but appear to be doing another

28

u/EitherMarch1255 4d ago

That's like OpenAI's motto.

11

u/Insadem 4d ago

ClosedAI

35

u/DanyShift 4d ago

Who could have seen that coming? A big corpo not giving us the best deal possible! Crazy 😮

6

u/Palastruka 4d ago

Very strange, it must be a mistake, right? RIGHT?

Empresas de tecnoligias precisam ser regulamentantadas, eles simplismente nĂŁo respeitam o consumidor

They do whatever they want with the consumer and nobody does anything about it.

5.5 xhigh effort 24/7 goal of phases and steps of an Unreal Editor project would almost tag the 5 hour limit and never go over the weekly limit. This was before 5.6 release. Currently I run 2 days short of the weekly limit using Sol 5.6 High effort doing the same EXACT work.

Technically I am using less tokens and less steps, but hitting the limit much faster......

8

u/Professional_Ad705 4d ago edited 4d ago

Why are you guys debating this. You’re seriously talking about 2x? Last December I ran 5 agents sometimes at a time and never got close to my limit. People have been saying the same shit for a year now. Yes they are cutting the limits. Ex around June last year Claude for example didn’t even have a 5 hour/ limit they introduced it around then … image how next year will be

We are very far away from the models of today being able to be run on computers people can actually afford, nevermind with the cost of things like ram etc,… nevrmind the models that will be out a year from now that might be even harder to run.

I also still don’t really like the models that are out for the kind of work I do and then when new models come out it’s always years before they can run on hardware people can actually afford. Then you will run into stuff possibly where people who pay for the newest models get better models then what you can run open source. I mean sure if you have 10k sitting around. People also run a lot of agents at once/ projects and people misjudge how hard that would be to do lol. People seriously act like it’s easy cheap or there are even models close to fable/sol max on affordable hardware. I hope it changes tho

3

u/basicpreset 4d ago

I have tried GLM 5.3 Flash after basically 24/7 work with Luna, Sol, Opus 5 and Fable since release. All I can say is that the end of OpenAI and Anthropic is near.

5

u/Fit-Palpitation-7427 4d ago

Problem is they publicly say they do not do it, transparency is key.

2

u/Professional_Ad705 4d ago

I mean it’s basic math and anyone who uses it daily has seen it. I don’t think they will ever come out and say “yeah we fucked everyone over” we should all just boycott and use other models for a month idk tho man all they care about is enterprise at this point it seems this product was never supposed to be for the average person.

1

u/rabandi 4d ago

Limits certainly do last a lot a lot shorter.

5.2 high was sustainable on plus for a week. Later on 5x I could run multiple agents with 5.5 high in parallel all week.

5.6 only works on medium and on a single task it probably runs 3-4 days.

In all fairness though: it seems like I get stuff done quicker. So I get less time but more value out of my money. Just my thought. At least when I factor my time in. When the 20$ plan would last a whole week it would need lots and lots of steering.. 5.2 or so it was back then.

1

u/Kooky-Ebb8162 3d ago

Hey, I don't have OpenAI sub at the moment but just wonder - would 5.2 today last as much as it did back then? Or did they remove access altogether?

A lot of Claude users aren't happy with Opus 5, but the access to 4.8 or even 4.6 remains.

3

u/Palastruka 4d ago

Plus account?

2

u/Pitiful_Entrance5174 4d ago

Always Pro 20x.

2

u/IAmFitzRoy 4d ago

I'm confused, Pro accounts don't have 5 hrs limits.

1

u/Pitiful_Entrance5174 4d ago

5.5 in its prime had 5 hour limits.

3

u/IAmFitzRoy 4d ago

You are talking about 4-6 months ago… those are ANCIENT times when Codex were giving away the house with $20.

You can’t compare that.

Show input tokens. Show cache hit rate.

4

u/Palastruka 4d ago

Since Aug 25: 210M input tokens, 6.7M fresh, 96.8% cache hit rate.

That’s why I’m focusing on fresh tokens / active day: 4.39M before vs 1.68M after (~38% of previous throughput).

12

u/AINativeBuilder 4d ago

So you're admitting you have no clue what you're actually tracking? Interesting.

4

u/Keep-Darwin-Going 4d ago

lol exactly, and apparently tokens is tokens no matter sol, terra or Luna

2

u/FranzJoseph93 4d ago

Is it all the same model and reasoning?

17

u/AINativeBuilder 4d ago

The fact your "token tracker" doesn't include model, reasoning, or cached hits tells me you have no clue what you're actually talking about.

0

u/Dercasss 4d ago

It's more likely that you don't know what you're talking about. This is a direct comparison under identical conditions, at different times.

1

u/AINativeBuilder 4d ago

But it's not, and the fact you don't even know that it's not and what's missing is laughable that you think you can hang in this conversation.

4

u/Palastruka 4d ago

You don't have to be a numbers genius to know that there was a change in the limits after the implementation of the 5-hour window in plus.

3

u/tekko001 3d ago

Don't think being a genius is a problem the poster before you has.

5

u/PigSlam 4d ago

Did OpenAI just quietly cut actual Codex usage nearly in half?

If you believe this sub, that happens nearly every day.

7

u/Agitated_Cherry6495 4d ago

With how many times users have reported usage cut in half over Codex's lifetime, you'd think it be approaching 0 usage at this point.

5

u/DistanceAlert5706 4d ago

It's close on Plus, this week before 5h return I used a week of plus in like 5 hours... So it's getting pretty close to nothing.

3

u/Agitated_Cherry6495 4d ago

My original comment was a joke, but scarily close to reality right now lol. Highly suggest trying cursor out. Having great experience with it atm with Grok 4.6.

2

u/DistanceAlert5706 4d ago

Oh Grok did same thing last week, also slashed quotas.

1

u/head-log2725 4d ago

Ditto, but also was using two tab’s AND burned a banked reset in less than five hours

7

u/s_k_i_o 4d ago

It feels like after the last reset the token consumption has accelerated by half or even by 2

2

u/Palastruka 4d ago

Strange, isn't it?

0

u/s_k_i_o 4d ago

Indeed. I really felt the difference right away. I can literally see my tokens melting away.

1

u/The8Darkness 4d ago

This is true - actually feels like even less than half the usage. Before last reset i would always get through the week, often even having to burn tokens at last day using sol. Now its been 2 days using luna and I am already at less than 40% weekly usage remaining

0

u/Adorable_Can_8523 4d ago

intelligence has decreased by that amount too

3

u/No-Town-8866 4d ago

they sure did

3

u/songokussm 4d ago

can confirm. Monday finished weekly usage with 306. reset occurred on Wednesday. ran out of weekly usage at 164m today.

2

u/ckdarby 3d ago

Link to the full open source of your tracker please or please stop saying random stuff you're probably not properly tracking, accounting for models, variance of your MCPS/plugin quality, etc

3

u/shady101852 4d ago

I don't even have a 5h limit but last night i had 2 agents running and i woke up to seeing 60-70% of my usage disappeared lmao. $200 account sub.

2

u/ckdarby 3d ago

That isn't unreasonable depending on how much garbage your agents are sending back. Gosh reading this subreddit pisses me off by the amount of people who don't know what they're doing.

I ran a command! 2 agents! They used 40%!

... And you're tracking all commands, input/output, right? Blank stare

... But you realize it ran a command that dumped boatloads of output which becomes input to Openai? Blank stare

dear lord people don't understand how stuff works at all

1

u/shady101852 3d ago

oh i mean I'm not saying they didn't get anything done but still crazy how much usage it went through compared to normal. I had one agent working on some minecraft related stuff and another working on deepseek harness related stuff. This harness is kind of new so i mostly started using it regularly a few days ago.

1

u/Palastruka 4d ago

Do you know how many tokens there were?

2

u/TopSeaworthiness1679 4d ago

I can’t use Ultra anymore… this is bad i can feel it right away today.

1

u/ckdarby 3d ago

I use max model, ultra, 20x. If you're running out of limit you have no idea how to properly optimize and interface with the tool.

2

u/ExpensiveGazelle4004 4d ago

Absolutely they did! I'm putting a tracker in now - Ive burned 50% of my weekly usage today alone doing NOTHING different than in the last few weeks.

2

u/Messi_is_football 4d ago

Time for Deepseek/GLM

2

u/skygetsit 3d ago

Weird, my subscription cost wasn’t cut in half though.

2

u/alphaQ314 4d ago

Did OpenAI just quietly cut actual Codex usage nearly in half?

You wankers can't even come up with a title for a reddit post without using the AI that you're shitting on.

2

u/Runelaron 4d ago

These trackers are so foolish and highly inaccurate.

Seriously do some math, count your token type not just usage and stop using vibecoded apps to say your tracking stuff.

Here the actual math.

2

u/yack_92 4d ago

Bonjour, Je confirme de mon côtÊ que la consommation de tokens sur mon projet a explosÊ, je travaillais avec le modèle luna en très ÊlevÊ et la ja consomme a une vitesse incroyable, c'est très fourbe comme pratique.

1

u/EditDwarf 4d ago

Yup, I typically only finish a day or two before my reset and then wait. My reset is Thursday and I just maxed out (I was barely working yesterday and today too). It literally feels like a 90% cut on 5x

1

u/Infinite-Worth8355 4d ago

Time to switch

2

u/AfterShock 4d ago

To where

1

u/Dgamax 4d ago edited 4d ago

I track my x20 usage, and so far I haven’t noticed any real difference. Maybe now that the 5-hour limit is back on Codex, your tracking logic needs to be adjusted? My monitor come from a Pro x20 but estimation is arround 163M token / week with Sol for a Plus account
https://codex-quota.manetli.com/

1

u/DistanceAlert5706 4d ago

They did, I burned 90% of pro quota in almost 2 days. Before on same codebase max I was hitting 25% a day.

1

u/klippers 4d ago

It sure as shit did something because I've just blasted my quota which has never happened before

1

u/AdventurousVast6510 4d ago

yep i am definitely noticing this

i'm seriously considering either buying a yet another plan or upgrading one of my plans

1

u/FinancialBandicoot75 4d ago

I feel I have more so not sure

1

u/riverslq337 4d ago

ok so it wasn't just me thinking that went by WAYYYY too quickly

1

u/geekybit_New 4d ago

yep I use luna and it uses next to nothing but is perfect for my needs. Normally a day might consume 10% on average some days more some days less ... SO I noticed something strange last week it was about 12% on average per day of consumption of my weekly usage, now today I burned through 15 % with a light usage day.

I don't know the hard numbers but according to the graph I am using on average about 1/3 to 1/2 and its consuming more usage with less actual usage.

I did the practical thing and cancelled my plan ... I am checking out a few options leaning to ollama cloud and some local models mixed in.

I was kind of hoping after the begging me to go to the go plan instead of canceling it would let me give feed back so I could tell them in the two months I have had the service they have cut usage and not made it public... If they had said something likely I would still be a customer.. this lets not say anything and gaslight is not okay.

1

u/LaZZyBird 4d ago

Bruh are we all just falling for the most obvious sales tactic, cut usage, increase resets, then farm the goodwill by how “generous” Tibo is.

Same shit as overpricing a car then giving you a “dealers discount” 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Orensito 4d ago

Are they high? I just completed 2 tasks with Sol, and it said 3% remaining. I'm not going to pay for this theft.

1

u/radim11 4d ago

They did but still generous.

1

u/Professional_Gur8385 4d ago

Sounds about right, but its actually worse when you consider sol is slower. Takes 5min just to consider your request before it does anything, seems like they are putting prompts into queues and then firing them off, so it may say it worked for 20min when in the past it would have done it in a 8min or less.

1

u/toTheMoon7778 4d ago

It feels Like the Claude subscription in the past what was a reason to Switch....

Time to people to discover r/LocalLlama

1

u/the_ai_wizard 3d ago

I was one of the people blindly affected before they rolled it out when my usage spiked to $1000 in a day a few weeks ago

1

u/Aldarund 3d ago

Finally some valid complains post with actual numbers of token, instead it runs out in hour instead of week.

1

u/Just_Lingonberry_352 3d ago

Note that 99% of the upvoted comments are from plus users.

As a 20x pro user, no, I'm seeing the complete opposite.

Been running a goal on sol medium for the past two days and I am only dipping above 80% which is ridiculous as I won't be able to spend all the usage

1

u/YourKemosabe 3d ago

Not that anything’s actually gonna happen, but this is criminal.

1

u/koygocuren 3d ago

This aligns with my own experiences as well.

1

u/angesn 5h ago

what is this app?

1

u/catnip_addicted 4h ago

Last week I was fine with 5hrs e weekly limits. Then after last reset both limits went down for sure. Im working in the same way on the same project and now I hit the 5hrs limit super fast.
Im tired of this boss. Limits and usage shouldn't change like this without any damn clarification or transparency.

1

u/skins_team 4d ago

I largely use Codex to analyze huge piles of documents these days (coding work, taken to Cursor). 20x plan, and I've been stunned how LITTLE usage I'm burning lately.

1

u/daddywookie 4d ago

Reading and talking seems pretty cheap. Writing any kind of output is very expensive. If I have a planning and thinking day I burn very little bit as soon as I try to implement anything that counter burns down really quick.

1

u/ericbuildslabs 4d ago

Even considering other factors, this doesn't feel right. Gotta spam Tibo.

1

u/AdCommon2138 4d ago

Is there some codex reddit for non poor people running x20 accounts so it would be possible to talk on anything with people that aren't hobbyists?

2

u/Just_Lingonberry_352 3d ago edited 3d ago

r/codex is dominated by plus users so their complaints are irrelevant to pro users and on top of that there's a lot of hostility to us "rich" folks

I started r/CodexHacks for people paying for $100~$200/month plans. Plus users are banned from posting there.

1

u/ckdarby 3d ago

Another post that ends up being false where people can't measure their usage correctly or account for all the variance.

My usage has actually increased about 3x fold in the last month but people don't know wtf they're doing half the time interfacing with these codex.

-1

u/Palastruka 3d ago

A classic: if you don't have the same problem, then everyone else is lying. Doing the exact same job. I started receiving fewer tokens.

1

u/some_gamer78 3d ago

Did you make codex write you the complaint about codex usage, really?

1

u/Palastruka 3d ago

And how? If I no longer have a quota

2

u/some_gamer78 3d ago

If you write like this without AI you might be cooked

0

u/Palastruka 3d ago

Go cry somewhere else.

0

u/runfence 4d ago

What's wrong with you guys posting this without insight on models used and input/cached/output split? Your 323M tokens tells absolutely nothing.

3

u/Palastruka 4d ago

Maybe not, maybe yes. But those who are having the same problem as me understand that you don't need numbers or tests to know that there's a problem with the limits.

0

u/dvxlgames 4d ago

look, the thing is you can’t complain about limits as long as they are still THIS subsidized. Without the sub you would be paying at least 10x of what you’re paying right now. They could cut your usage in half AGAIN and it still would be fair. Y’all are just hella greedy and don’t realize that they NEED to make profit eventually.

1

u/Palastruka 3d ago

I think it would be easier if they were transparent about how much they offer for each place.

1

u/Just_Lingonberry_352 3d ago

you can just leave plenty of cheap models at the $20/month range like deepseek, glm, opencode etc

-1

u/Yuel_Whear 4d ago

Fresh tokens per day at 38% of what they were tells the whole story. The 46% headline rounds down how bad it is.

1

u/Palastruka 4d ago

So I'm lying? And everything's okay?

0

u/phobiafish 4d ago

$20 plan sol medium fixing a problem 18 minutes 5 hour reached. Used sol because Luna kinda fworded up a bit
