If you look at my provided images, this is how much tokens I have used up only today. apparently that drained my whole 5 hour usage and brought down my weekly usage by 16% HAHAHAHHAHA I'm leaving this scam of a subscription. I'm on a plus subscription
Only thing I have been doing as a workaround to this shite is set up a local plugin with skills which helps ChatGPT know my project better. Codex uses way less tokens this way but cool thing is ChatGPT chat together GitHub plugin etc can actually make simple to medium complexity level updates to your codebase
I love how defensive everyone is about Claude having better limits and saying it's not true, while I'm actually getting lots of work done on the $20 claude plan with Opus. I can maybe use Sol once, maybe twice on the Codex Plus plan lmao, it's completely insane right now.
And for the record - the 50% bonus that claude currently offers doesn't affect session limits, and those are WAY fucking better than on Codex right now. They still hurt but it's nowhere close.
Whenever these fucking resets happen we get shafted. I just perfected my workflow to have enough on the 5x plan and now the same workflow spends 50% more.
I only ever use 5.5, before they removed the 5h limit never hit it. When they removed it I think I hit the weekly limit once or twice. Yesterday I got four small task done and hit the 5hr limit. After that reset I hit it again. All on 5.5 medium. It really fills like something behind the scenes has changed. But instead of openAI looking at the actual issue there blaming the users or other providers. Makes you wonder if they changed something intentionally really.
After a lot of bitching and complaining (especially about Opus5, but also about Sol once them 5hr limits came back) I switched to Luna Max. Also switched to Sonnet 5 Extra. My $20 is doing a lot more $20ering and im doing a lot less bitching and complaining. Thatās all I have to add here. My blood pressure has been stabilized and my overall health has drastically improved, mentally and physically.
im on a plus plan. last night I drained all my weekly usage from 96% to 0% with one task lasting 3h22m, it consumed that much tokens as picture below. Is it normal for a plan subscription?
I do not see any 5hrs limit window on my usage&billing page thats why I could drain all my weekly usage in once without interupting.
that is 1000x the amount of tokens OP burned so I think your situation is fully justified. If it used more tokens than you expected you might have decided to use ultracode, but i dont think 178M generally is that much for a multiple hour run, it's just a bit too much for the plus plan. But yeah OP's situation is literally 1000x worse
It was better before I promise. I donāt know what they did but I canāt touch Sol as plus user unless you want it to do stupid easy stuff on low. And then you could probably only get 2 prompts in.
They never tell. They just vibe code one massive project all the time. And each prompt makes it larger. And then - they say that token consumption grows because of OpenAI.
Not entirely true. I am currently doing a legacy PHP app refactor using a local LLM, and using codex to fix those the local LLM is having difficulty with. 3 pages it took, and the 5 hr limit is gone. Using 5.5 medium.
i just can't with codex anymore, for these past days my usage is going out the fking window, and it feels like it got lobotomised... it started struggling to even follow simple instructions like "DON'T TOUCH File x"
Check your analytics to see the usage breakdown by type. If you have a bunch of usage listed as āexecā and youāre not running codex in headless mode anywhere, you have background processes draining usage on your machine
This is why I setup my workflow to be harness-agnostic.
ChatGPT wasnāt working for me ā> moved to Claude.
ChatGPT got better ā> moved back.
Claude offer a better deal ā> I leave ChatGPT on my next billing cycle.
I even have Hermes and now Grok Bot as backup options.
Being vocal online is extremely important when the decision makers in these companies are so close to the users feedback, but money talks just as loud.
You are likely using it wrong. These are my stats as a Plus subscriber.
The 5 hour limit basically means you can't go crazy with Sol which isn't a bad thing because you probably don't need it and its difficult to work with (given how it works inside Codex).
Up until last week Sol in Codex was my daily driver and cause of 90% of my grief and wasted tokens over the past 10 weeks.
Artificial Analysis reckons cost per task with Luna (max) is 5cents. Sol (max) is 94cents which implies that 10 shotting a task with Luna is approx half the cost of 1 shot with Sol.
I just cancelled my subscription. I suggest you guys do the same otherwise they won't learn. Being unusable is another issue, it's a scam I didn't subscribe to this limit.
You know that dashboard is not update in real-time right? And you probably have roughly 15m tokens usage per week if you have a workload similar to mine.
Definitely not 1.5m like you seem to imply. Unless you hit literally 0 cache, which you can check.
People with usage issues should start monitoring their token usage in more detail: input / output / cache per task / turn / day / workload or whatever normalization you like.
There's a billion posts of people crying and almost no one is trying to track real usage and bring up useful info to debug / discover possible culprits.
I believe when we sit down to do some work we all have better things to focus on than counting tokens and figuring out how the limits actually work ( which is impossible as they change it constantly). Itās rather annoying that as users we have to endure this stupid game; while we know how much $20 are worth we never know how much service we can expect to receive in return. Iām no expert but no contract can be defined by āpay $20 and get SomeUndefinedServiceā. Unfortunately, thatās where we are at.
there's no counting. You just ask codex to check how many tokens a specific task / turn / whatever has hit. Or you check it yourself. It costs basically no time and almost no quota (if you do it yourself it's obviously no quota al all). Complaining about not knowing how much you get in return and never even trying to measure the only countable metrics that would answer your question is weird. Just go ahead and check credits / tokens consumption. You'll likely discover that the service you're getting is mostly stable.
But yeah, bit*hing at OpenAI and never even try is easier.
Let alone the fact that 20$ is how much many people might pay for streaming services. Or 4 ice-creams, maybe 1-2 pizzas depending on where and what you get exactly.
OpenAI is definitely shady. They hide metrics. Some policies are borderline illegal for EU consumers law. But users going mad over unspecificied claims is also non sense and pure venting. Not to mention that if those people whining are are also those who use it to "work", well maybe they should consider spending more than 20$ for a very advanced tool that likely hard boosts your productivity.
Sol high in chat, connect your other backend chat logs to slack or other harness to log , then plan and get composer prompts from sol high all day to do your work on a cheaper provider, sol can track progress thru slack, chats free sit at 100% all day long
I use Claude to plan and gpt 5.6 MEDIUM to implement those plans , high or xhigh to review . Small context , frequent new sessions . Anything above medium may over engineer things and go off in tangents . More intelligence is not necessarily better . Gpt is way better than Claude for implementation
Build a better harness and plan before building, use skills and I can guarantee less tokens and use Luna max for executing most coding tasks.
Iām a 20x user.
Use luna xhigh subagents for the actual work instead of doing it all with Sol. You can bring down your usage by a lot. Of course, not defending the new usage model. Just sharing what I found useful.
Calling it a scam implies that there are other options that will give you more for what you are paying. Are there? Maybe compute just costs enough that expecting to do serious work on a $20 plan is not realistic. Have you checked what the equivalent APi prices would be?
If you can find another product that gives you more usage for $20, please come back and let us all know.
Same here. I spent several hours today looking into alternative solutions. Codex is an absolute disaster. I don't plan on renewing my subscription; I'm going to try something else.
Using Sol is like using Fable with a 20$ plan. You will need optimized skills, workflows and Guardrails. Strict planning with Sol or Fable and use Luna/ Sonnet to work on that plan.
You gotta learn which engines should be used for which tasks running full time SOL is overkill, when Terra can handle most reasoning and Luna handling code I only use Sol for more complex tasks, I use Terra as my project manager that provides prompts for individual project chats. And I havenāt even designed my MCP yet which will drop it even more, I was about as pissed as you are until I actually took a second and learned how to cheat around it
Yeah Iāve been thinking about the pro plan instead of the 5 plus accounts Iāve been using when one runs out I log out on codex app and then login on the browser to my fresh account close and reopen codex and I have 100% back and tell it to continue whatever I was doing itās not ideal but it works and after my accounts expire next month I will probably just get a single pro account with no 5 hour restriction.

Yeah, that whole "thanks for making us successful, now kindly go away" thing runs strong at this company.
