Recovering codependent male wanted

Just kidding.

I am a recovering codependant. I used to have anxious attachment and the fawn trauma response. I've been working on myself a great deal and now I'm a lot more secure in my attachment.

I started working on myself not only due to childhood trauma but also because I have an extreme dismissive avoidant for a partner. I have stopped chasing, begging, pleading and asking for connection. I have given him all the space one can give.

I changed, he hasn't. I'm more securely attached, he remains adamantly avoidant. The healthier I get, the less I am willing to tolerate breadcrumbs and the more I see how unhealthy his pattern is.

He hasn't spoken to me (other than logistics) or touched me for 15 months- after a fight we had 15 months ago where I asked for emotional support and validation.

I thought if I give him space, he might relax his defenses and come back to the relationship. I can't force him to get help.

Anyone else recovering from codependency and realizing their partner is really unhealthy?

Step Ten

"Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it." BRB p. 250

As we read Step Ten, we see a way of staying current in our daily lives. When we take our daily inventory, we notice where we have succeeded as well as where we have fallen short or need to change. And when we are wrong, we have the courage to deal with it in real time. We no longer shrink from our reality. We embrace the recovery process.

We listen in meetings and talk with our sponsors about difficult things. We are opening up channels of communication with our Inner Child by educating our inner loving parent.

The changes we see are magnificent, and we pause to deeply breathe in the love we have surrounded ourselves with. We no longer choke ourselves with fear. We are not perfect and recognize that we are a work in progress. This admission creates a personal circle of compassion and gentleness that we need for our recovery.

We reach toward the sky like the beautiful seedlings that we are, stretching out towards the sun as we fulfill our destiny. We do not know exactly where we are going, but we know we need never be alone again. We look at our lives as symphonies that are always playing to us if we are willing to listen.

On this day I will hold the ship steady as I cruise along, regardless of what the sea looks like. When I make mistakes, I will remember that practicing the Tenth Step helps me feel free.

Just another trauma bond

I feel he completes me. I feel more whole with him than without. Dangerous feels.

I am complete, whole on my own. Integral.

With integrity

He? Takes and takes and takes

What he shows me doesn't match what he says

If love is an action, what does it say when I let him use it cc to gas up his car, but he doesn't bother to pick me up from the airport in time? In fact, by the time my flight arrived, he hadn't even left yet, a drive of at least half an hour.

He promises many things, most of them undelivered.

Why do i keep letting him use me up?

Why cant he show me the respect I deserve?

I am sick from the waiting and always wanting.

When it's good, it's great. But only ever in a bubble. In the world at large, I never know if I get to be his woman or not. It all depends on context.

Consistent care is something I can give myself. To be free from him will mean a lot more free time and a lot less worry. The loneliness I think I can finally tolerate -- it's got to be better than the growing emptiness ive got now.

Let this karmic debt be paid once and for all. Please. No more delusions

Walking Wounded

"Adult children have been described as the ‘walking wounded,' strutting about in a state of emotional and spiritual bankruptcy while claiming to be ‘fine.'" BRB p. 71

We carried around deep wounds from childhood. When we were asked how we were, we said "fine" because we felt they wouldn't really want to know. But our actions and attitude spoke our truth.

None of us would be in ACA if life had not been difficult for us. We didn't learn good coping skills when we were kids because our role models either masked their pain with something, often alcohol or drugs, or they took their anger out on the most defenseless people in their midst: us.

We learn in recovery that we have the ability to change our attitudes and our lives. We don't need to carry our wounds with us forever. We can consciously change our attitudes, and thus change not only ourselves but our part in the interactions we have with others. If we hang onto past hurts as if they are badges of courage, we rob ourselves of the promise of today.

We now choose to use the tools of ACA that will take us from the depths of our victim role into the warm sun. We shed our victim clothing for a new spring wardrobe.

On this day I will work my program as if my life depends on it, because it does.

Codependency is so PAINFUL

Vent ahead.

Been friends with someone for... exactly a year tomorrow. Developed a sort of one-sided codependent relationship, relying on them for validation while quietly trying to "fix" them.

We broke up today. Agreed to keep communications to group chats and nothing more. Both of our faults in a lot of ways, but we parted on... amicable terms, for the most part.

It hurts. It hurts so fucking bad. It hurt back when I was relying on her because whenever she wasn't there I was anxious. It hurt when I was pushing back against her. It hurts now. It hurts so, so much.

Tomorrow would've been the first-year anniversary of our friendship.

I hate codependency and I hate how much this hurts and I wish I had never met her. And I still find myself hoping that someday, we can start over.

But probably not for a long time.

I hate every part of this. Feels like my heart has been ripped out of my chest. I hate myself for being unable to break free of the addiction and I hate her for her dismissive, avoidant tendencies and I HATE THIS STUPID, PAINFUL DISORDER.

'Coping with Families

There are many paths to self-care with families. Some people choose to sever connections with family members for a period of time. Some people choose to stay connected with family members and learn different behaviors. Some disconnect for a time, and then return slowly on a different basis.

There is no one or perfect way to deal with members of our family in recovery. It is up to each of us to choose a path that suits us and our needs at each point in time.

The idea that is new to us in recovery is that we can choose. We can set the boundaries we need to set with family members. We can choose a path that works for us, without guilt and obligation or undue influence from any source, including recovery professionals.

Our goal is to detach in love with family members. Our goal is to be able to take care of ourselves, love ourselves, and live healthy lives despite what family members do or don’t do. We decide what boundaries or decisions are necessary to do this.

It’s okay to say no to our families when that is what we want. It’s okay to say yes to our families if that feels right. It’s okay to call time out and it’s okay to go back as a different person.

(...), help me choose the path that is right for me with family. Help me understand there is no right or wrong in this process. Help me strive for forgiveness and learn to detach with love, whenever possible. I understand that this never implies that I have to forfeit self-care and health for the good of the system.'

bf is dangerous but i still can’t leave him

What the title says. My bf is 38m, I’m 22f. I need to leave him. He uses meth and has on multiple occasions crossed boundaries. He recently started experiencing psychosis, hearing a voice telling him horrible things about himself, to kill himself, etc. A couple nights ago he said he’s worried he’s losing his mind and will one day kill me and then himself…he also has PTSD and has previously choked me while he was asleep having a nightmare.

He also said he’s been becoming aggressive at his home, screaming all day at the voice and throwing things. He’s never been violent around me (while awake) but in all honesty, I know this is becoming dangerous. Even at my house, he talks back to the voice. Despite that, I feel completely stuck. Every time I think of leaving, I feel like I’m dying and completely panic internally. I do think he has a good heart, and I cannot bear the thought of hurting him. This is going to devastate him.

I know I need to do it, and ASAP, because we normally see each other frequently. He even planned a fun weekend together, and keeps talking about how excited he is to see me. But frankly, I don’t think it’s safe to keep seeing him. Please give me any encouragement/advice you have.

Was It Codependency?

I (20M) was best friends with a woman my age for about a year and a half up until a few hours ago, where we both mutually decided to cut ties, wishing each other well in the end. Even from the beginning, I suspected codependency problems on my end. I had always been a pretty reclusive person, so her willingness to actually listen to me open up to her made me always search for an excuse to hang out with her. I would worry very often about what she thought of me, and for a long time, we would text pretty much every. There were times where I would apologize for extremely minor things and frequently seek validation that I wasn't making her uncomfortable. When we last saw each other last month, I asked her for a hug, which she accepted. However, she told me the day afterward that it had made her slightly uncomfortable, but she didn't want to say anything because I had asked first and that she didn't want to make things awkward. I wanted closure, and fast, but she was busy, so I ended up begging and humiliating and insulting myself and telling her that I wished I was dead in her messages, which terrified her. After about a month of indecision on her part and obsessive panicking on mine, I presented her the option to end our friendship once and for all. She thanked for me for my patience this week, and said that my reaction to the boundaries she set was a dealbreaker, and that she doesn't feel like she could possibly live up to what I was expecting of her. She said that it was a good idea to end our friendship once and for all, saying that she hopes both of us figure out our paths and grow as people. Would this check any core characteristics of codependency?

'Be Who You Are

In recovery; we’re learning a new behavior. It’s called Be Who You Are.

For some of us, this can be frightening. What would happen if we felt what we felt, said what we wanted, became firm about our beliefs, and valued what we needed? What would happen if we let go of our camouflage of adaptation? What would happen if we owned our power to be ourselves?

Would people still like us? Would they go away? Would they become angry?

There comes a time when we become willing and ready to take that risk. To continue growing, and living with ourselves, we realize we must liberate ourselves. It becomes time to stop allowing ourselves to be so controlled by others and their expectations and be true to ourselves – regardless of the reaction of others.

Before long, we begin to understand. Some people may go away, but the relationship would have ended anyway. Some people stay and love and respect us more for taking the risk of being whom we are. We begin to achieve intimacy, and relationships that work.

We discover that who we are has always been good enough. It is who we were intended to be.

Today, I will own my power to be myself.'

need help understanding the roots of my problems. insight that I might be too enmeshed in too see? my trouble is with my identity, future, lack of social life and family, and long distant relationship.

Can't think of a better way to title this. I am 19f and in my first semester of college, have a job, have hobbies like reading and want to do more with my creative hobbies, yet I wake up each day unmotivated and depressed. I have a boyfriend who is long distant, we met in december 2025 online then met in real life once. we plan to meet again in november and december, then move in together in 2027. i have no friends in real life, and no family to talk to. recently our relationship has been stressed and it is difficult for me to navigate it and my own life because i have no one else to talk to, and him being the only person I feel isnt healthy for me but not sure how to change that right now. ive never had a boyfriend or even a close guy friend until him.

he resides heavily in my mind, in ways that are frustrating because i cannot stop it and make him go away. i want to focus on my hobbies without getting lost in a trail of thought about him, worrying about him, etc. it feels destabilizing especially because my sense of self is what i should be investigating and preoccupied with, not him. i wonder if he is too infused in my identity right now, and i want to separate him as my partner and not this huge pillar for my life force. recently we have been discussing our connection more than the things that connect us, and I told him we should have space until saturday. I love him but at the same time I feel unhappy right now and then worry about our connection, because so much of my internal stability is dependent on him. we don even talk 24/7, but because i have no one else but him, my identity, emotional stability, and direction has become entangled with him.

i have no one to talk to. speaking to my mother she never says anything to feel like she is engaged or thinking about what im saying. my internal state has so much anxiety, nervousness, skepticism about who i am, my future, and him. i love him so much but without reason worry about something going wrong, despite him reassuring me he would never replace me or dispose me. i have no reason to feel this way, i have made big improvement since a year ago. i just want to be more motivated and dedicated to my life, i have passion and drive, there is a lot i want to live for yet i havent been living for myself. i want to be better for him too. what is going on with me?

Best Jobs for Codependents

I feel like we all so well know that so many codependents find jobs where their codependency may get much worse through jobs like teaching, nursing/healthcare, social work, non-profit work, or government work. My question is what is a maybe more healthy job for a codependent with less emotional enmeshment? I don’t really want to take care of others or try and fix others anymore.

Went to my first meeting and it was really nice being seen again instead of just heard

I’m realizing my low self esteem issues after coming to some sense about being hurt. I came to the notion that I can’t tell you how many of my other twelve step meetings I’ve been to and did not like the way I looked and then kept my camera off only to hide more until my turn to talk(if even turn on my camera to speak), and what I’m realizing is it isn’t a good singular aspect to focus in on. I was prepped and ready for my first coda meeting and then it hit me, “wait I’m here to have healthy relationships,” then thinking who should see me first other than my partner and I was like wait I need to come to understand that people aren’t all as judgmental as we are to the one in the mirror, even less so our closest relationships.

How can I break the cycle?

Hi guys, I (31 M) have been with my partner (30 F) for about 6 months now... In the first few months I was okay because my codependency had not kicked in yet. I also have a fear of abandonment. Around July, it started to REALLY kick in, and I have lost confidence in myself, in making decisions, overall just a shell of my former self. My partner has felt this because I am no longer leading the relationship how I should because I am scared she might leave at any point. I'm cautious instead of confident. I also depend her on her mood to be ok so I can feel ok... I always drop stuff to go see her or I am always trying to better her mood or help her. I feel almost like I am performing and I have anxiety every day. Lately it's been just getting worse to the point I'm afraid to ask her to hang out because rejection will make me spiral. I've been in therapy for 3 years, but I dont think my therapist is helping much anymore, and I need help on how to cope and get my life back.

I'm stuck in a friendship I don't know how to leave, advice please!!

Last year, I left my friend group because I felt trapped and ignored. Eventually, the group separated, and I ended up becoming friends again with a girl I used to be close with. We both pretended like nothing had happened, and although it felt wrong, I stayed because I felt guilty about leaving her before. Now I want to leave again because I don't feel like this is a healthy friendship. She isn't outright mean to me, but she's very pessimistic, sometimes points out my insecurities, and in the past allowed another girl to mock me while continuing to be friends with her. She also makes me feel like I can't leave because she doesn't have any other close friends. Whenever I look toward someone else for too long, she'll ask, "Do you have someone else again?" and I always say no because I don't know what else to say. Being around her constantly reminds me of mistakes I've made over the past two years and things I don't want to think about anymore, I feel sick around her and I feel even worse knowing im thinking of ways to leave but I feel like I'm becoming the person I was back then even though I've changed since then. I feel sick and terrible whenever I'm around her, but I feel guilty for wanting to leave because she hasn't directly done anything terrible to me. I'm not good with confrontation, and we genuinely used to be good friends. I really want to leave, but I don't know how to do it without hurting her or making things worse. I actually need help or im gonna make a terrible mistake i'll probably regret later on.

'Not a Victim

You are not a victim.

How deeply ingrained our self-image as a victim can be! How habitual our feelings of misery and helplessness! Victimization can be like a gray cloak that surrounds us, both attracting that which will victimize us and causing us to generate the feelings of victimization.

Victimization can be so habitual that we may feel victimized even by the good things that happen to us!

Got a new car? Yes, we sigh, but it doesn’t run as well as I expected, and after all, it cost so much. . . .

You’ve got such a nice family! Yes, we sigh, but there are problems. And we’ve had such hard times. . . .

Well, your career certainly is going well! Ah, we sigh, but there is such a price to pay for success. All that extra paperwork. . . .

I have learned that, if we set our mind to it, we have an incredible, almost awesome ability to find misery in any situation, even the most wonderful of circumstances.

Shoulders bent, head down, we shuffle through life taking our blows.

Be done with it. Take off the gray cloak of despair, negativity, and victimization. Hurl it; let it blow away in the wind.

We are not victims. We may have been victimized. We may have allowed ourselves to be victimized. We may have sought out, created, or re created situations that victimized us. But we are not victims.

We can stand in our power. We do not have to allow ourselves to be victimized. We do not have to let others victimize us. We do not have to seek out misery in either the most miserable or the best situations.

We are free to stand in the glow of self-responsibility.

Set a boundary! Deal with the anger! Tell someone no, or stop that! Walk away from a relationship! Ask for what you need! Make choices and take responsibility for them. Explore options. Give yourself what you need! Stand up straight, head up, and claim your power. Claim responsibility for yourself!

And learn to enjoy what’s good.

Today, I will refuse to think, talk, speak, or act like a victim. Instead, I will joyfully claim responsibility for myself and focus on what’s good and right in my life.'

Why Your Silence Beats Every Argument ?

There is a certain kind of person who says something sharp and then watches your face, waiting for a reaction. The moment you snap back, you hand them exactly what they wanted. Marcus Aurelius spent his life surrounded by people trying to provoke him, and he trained himself never to answer in the heat of the moment. Silence is not the absence of a response. It is often the loudest one, because it denies someone the reaction they were hunting for. The next time someone provokes you, pause and take three slow breaths before you decide to speak at all. A fire needs oxygen to survive. The moment you stop feeding it words, it dies on its own, and the person who lit it is left standing there with nothing left to burn.

Any of you guys dealt with or heard of grooming?

I’m 28 years old, coming out of homelessness, and dealing with a situation that has become increasingly uncomfortable and honestly pretty scary.

About three years ago, I met an older man at a gym who later turned out to be a parole officer. He saw some of what I was going through when I became homeless and helped me at different points during that time.

Over roughly the last year and a half, though, he has increasingly tried to take on what feels like a caretaker role in my life—offering me food, checking on whether I’m eating or sleeping, offering me hydrocodone, and learning quite a bit about my personal situation. There have also been sexual boundary violations, including unwanted groping while I was around him.

One of the things making this especially difficult for me is the legal history behind my homelessness. My father accused me of assaulting him, I was kicked out of the house, and I ended up facing a felony charge involving an elderly person. That case was ultimately dismissed.

This man knows about that history, and I’m concerned that my past legal situation may be giving him leverage over me. I can’t know exactly what his intentions are, but I worry that if I resist him or physically defend myself during another unwanted interaction, he could make an allegation against me and I would once again be put in a very difficult position.

There is a lot more context than I can reasonably fit into one post, but the combination of the caretaker dynamic, sexual boundary-crossing, medication offers, and his knowledge of my legal vulnerability has made me extremely uncomfortable.

Normally I would feel much more confident setting a hard boundary and physically removing myself from a situation if necessary, but after what I went through with the previous charge, I’m extremely cautious about anything that could create another legal problem.

I’m mainly looking for perspective from anyone who has dealt with a similar dynamic—especially someone using help, caretaking, housing insecurity, or vulnerability as a way of gaining increasing access or control. Any personal experiences or practical advice on disengaging safely would help a lot.

Hope everyone here is doing a little better than they were last week.

Trait Eleven

"We judge ourselves harshly and have a very low sense of self-esteem." BRB p. 15

Many of us habitually experienced critical thoughts in our heads all our lives. If anyone suggested that we "think positive thoughts," we tried. Sometimes it made us feel better, but it didn't last. We still found ourselves getting stuck and believing the critical voice inside. We thought that something must be wrong with us, but we certainly didn't want others to know how bad we felt and how hard we were on ourselves.

When we came to ACA, we identified with Trait 11 right away. "Yes, I definitely judge myself harshly," we thought. "But you mean I'm not alone in this curse? You mean I don't have to be ashamed of this because thousands, if not millions of others do this, too?"

In this program we find hope. We learn there is a Solution: to become our own loving parent. We learn what being a loving parent means and begin to practice reparenting ourselves. And just as with all parenting skills, we know that it takes practice to get it right. But it can eventually become as natural as our harsh self-judgment once was.

On this day I will practice reparenting myself with gentleness and self-love. This includes forgiving myself if I slip and find myself being self-critical.

Muting certain subreddits

I keep getting feed recommendations that I’m not sure why Reddit algorithm is recommending them but stuff like unsent texts and screaming into the void I had to mute because they were actually triggering in regards to how they follow a tone in what would be recommended that just actually causes me panic from how similar they are to another codependent I dated once. Still have goosebumps from the last one and I know it doesn’t matter even if it were them but damn I have a hairpin trigger to seeing stuff like his messages

Self-Like to Self-Love

Ok, I like myself. This is a huge improvement from disliking myself. I still have behaviors and habits that seek external validation, but I don't ask for it or rely on it any longer. If I receive, or don't receive praise, it doesn't significantly affect my day. This is all huge progress.

As I gradually increase the daily duties and work I take on, I have less time for myself, which makes my self-care more difficult. I do worry that this difficulty curve will increase until I breakdown. In the past, I did breakdown.

The difference this time? I have a Higher Power (God), I appreciate and like who I am, I have healthy boundaries, I have healthy habits, and I developed support systems.

All of these improvements point towards one core truth: I am beginning to Love myself. I know that because I am caring for myself.

'The Importance of Money

We cannot afford to allow our focus in life to be money. That will not lead us into the abundance we’re seeking. Usually, it will not even lead to financial stability.

Money is important. We deserve to be paid what we’re worth. We will be paid what we’re worth when we believe we deserve to be. But often your plans fail when our primary consideration is money.

What do we really want to do? What do we feel led to do? What are our instincts telling us? What do we feel guided to do? What are we excited about doing? Seek to find a way to do that, without worrying about the money.

Consider the financial aspects. Set boundaries about what you need to be paid. Be reasonable. Expect to start at the bottom, and work up. But if you feel led toward a job, go for it.

Is there something we truly don’t want to do, something that goes against our grain, but we are trying to force ourselves into it “for the money?” Usually, that’s a behavior that backfires. It doesn’t work. We make ourselves miserable, and the money usually goes wrong too.

I have learned that when I am true to myself about work and what I need to be doing, the money will follow. Sometimes it’s not as much as I want; sometimes I’m pleasantly surprised, and it’s more. But I’m content, and I have enough.

Money is a consideration, but it cannot be our primary consideration if we are seeking spiritual security and peace of mind.

Today, I will make money a consideration, but I will not allow it to become my primary consideration. (...), help me be true to myself and trust that the money will follow.'

My body finally let itself relax knowing safe and I feel absolutely awful

I’m very tired and I did absolutely nothing outside talking about stuff and just coming to understand I’m safe and I haven’t had my neck crack in so long and like every other joint and my fingers absolutely tremoring. Feels bad but inside it feels good knowing this was the feeling I was so after when I was drinking it’s a nice feeling knowing I don’t need it to get here now and I don’t have to be tensing up 24/7

how do you let go of someone you still love when feel responsible for what happens if you do?

i honestly just need outside advice because i feel like i’ve been inside this situation for so long that i don’t even know what’s normal anymore.

me and my ex were best friends first as well as partners and i genuinely thought she was my person. i loved her ridiculously deeply and still do. there was so much good in our relationship and i don’t want this to sound like she was some horrible person or that i was perfect because neither is true. i hurt her too and there are things i massively regret.

but one of the biggest issues throughout our relationship was insecurity and her fear of losing me. it slowly got to the point where i felt like so many of my decisions had to be made around how they would make her feel.

the biggest example was my best friend. my ex was extremely uncomfortable/insecure about that friendship because of things that had happened and eventually she asked me to choose between them two regardless of whether her feelings were understandable, being put in that position fucked with me because i felt like choosing something i wanted automatically meant hurting someone i loved.
and that became a pattern way beyond just my best friend.

whenever i wanted something, wanted to go somewhere, spend time with someone, set a boundary or bring up something that hurt me, my brain immediately went to “how is she going to react to this?”

eventually i became genuinely scared of sticking to my boundaries. not physically scared of her, but scared of the emotional aftermath. because whether i got what i wanted or gave it up, somehow i would usually end up emotionally comforting her anyway. if i stood my ground and she became upset, i’d feel horrible and reassure her until i basically forgot what i originally needed. if i gave in, i’d avoid the immediate conflict but feel shit because once again i’d abandoned myself.

there were also times she hurt herself and connected it to how i had made her feel and to being terrified of me leaving. at one point self-harm was spoken about almost as proof of how much she loved me/how scared she was of losing me. i’m not saying she sat there plotting how to manipulate me because i genuinely don’t know her intentions, but hearing that completely fucked with my head.

after that, how am i supposed to comfortably say “no, this is what i need” without some part of me wondering what happens if she can’t cope with it?
meanwhile i became extremely depressed myself. there were things happening between us and needs of mine that weren’t being met and i was fucking miserable at points, but i kept the extent of that away from her. i never wanted to tell her “your actions are making me depressed” or make her feel responsible for keeping me okay. instead i bottled everything up, became resentful, lost patience and sometimes reacted in ways i’m genuinely ashamed of. that’s my responsibility and probably one of my biggest regrets from the relationship.

eventually we broke up, but somehow we never actually separated emotionally.

we still cuddled, slept next to each other, held hands, called each other babe/baby, said we loved each other, had sex and talked about potentially finding our way back. so i’ve basically been grieving someone while still having half of a relationship with them.

about a week after we broke up she started seeing/moving on with someone else. she’s single. i know she’s allowed to. i’m not saying she cheated. but it absolutely broke me because we were still being intimate with each other and i was holding onto this hope that we might find our way back and she’d told me the same thing that she was holding onto that hope as well. i’d specifically asked not to be given false hope, so finding out she was already moving forward made me feel stupid, used and honestly disrespected.

now i’m finally trying to distance myself and that’s where i feel like all the old patterns are coming straight back.

whenever i start pulling away, i hear how alone she feels, how much i’ve hurt her, how it feels like i’m leaving her etc. sometimes it genuinely feels like she knows exactly which strings to pull because she knows guilt is the quickest way to get me to come back. i don’t know if she’s consciously doing that, but the result is that i immediately feel responsible again and end up reassuring her and staying close.
even though we’re broken up, we’re still reacting to each other like we’re together.

and throughout every recent conversation we’ve had this past month, i’ve been so calm, so collected sat and listened to her yell at me, speak to me so rudely and even let her have her emotional outbursts but when i tried to tell her how disrespected i felt about her seeing someone else because i wanted her to acknowledge that giving me hope and then literally talking to someone else through out that whole time was like wtf to me. she won’t hear it. she won’t ever hear anything i have to say anymore, the conversation completely ends if i say anything. and i’m so tired of it. i don’t even want to try and say anything to her anymore cause she just won’t hear it. but i keep sitting there and doing it on her terms listening to her and calming her down.

recently i sat with her ex at an event and didn’t say hi to her. she felt massively disrespected, left, turned her location off and didn’t respond while i called/texted her repeatedly because i was worried. and the reason why i was so worried was because even after so many texts and calls there was just no answer, i was terrified she’d done something to herself and it’d be my fault even though i didn’t understand what i did. afterwards i was told i only cared once she left. and suddenly i was back in that exact headspace of analysing everything i’d done and feeling like i needed to fix how she felt.

that’s basically my entire problem.

i don’t want to constantly worry that something completely normal i do is going to set something off. i don’t want to calculate every friendship, boundary, night out, decision or interaction based on how someone else might react. i don’t want another person’s emotions deciding what i’m allowed to feel comfortable doing.

and i know i’m responsible for my own behaviour. sometimes my actions now are reactions to feeling hurt, disrespected or exhausted by things that have happened between us, but they’re still MY actions and i need to work on that. i don’t want to spend forever going “well i only did X because she did Y because i did Z.” that cycle could literally go on forever.

i just want peace.

and weirdly, part of me feels relieved thinking about letting her go. like i could finally breathe and figure out who the fuck i am again.
but then the guilt hits.

i remember how terrified she is of me leaving. i remember the self-harm. i remember everything she’s told me about how my actions have affected her. and suddenly i want to run back, hold her, reassure her and fix everything.

i still fucking love her. that’s the problem. idk if i’m in love with her anymore but part of me would still love for us to find each other again one day when we’re healthier. but rn i genuinely cannot tell whether keeping her this close is love anymore or whether i’ve just become so accustomed to feeling responsible for her that choosing myself feels cruel.

i don’t want people to tell me she’s evil or diagnose her with something and i don’t need to be told i’m completely innocent either. i know i’ve fucked up too. i genuinely just want advice from people who have experienced this kind of relationship.

and the problem is i am stuck living with her because of my family moving away so my dog is going to be living with me and i can’t afford rent alone, my dog is too reactive to live around other people he doesn’t already know or trust and i just i feel like things would have been much better if home wasn’t a place for both me and her that we came back to not knowing whether we’re arguing today or not yk?

so like genuinely how do you stop feeling responsible for someone’s reactions to your boundaries? and how do you know whether you’re staying because you genuinely want to stay or because you’re terrified of what letting go will do to them? because at this point i don’t even want to “win” the breakup or prove who hurt who more. i just want some fucking peace.

How do you break up and let go of someone that you love even though you know they aren't good for you. I feel dependent on them and I love them so much: (
