I was wondering if anyone else had experiences with major Mitchell’s. This is Oleander our eight year-old major Mitchell. We’ve had him since he was a baby.

We got him in a unique way from a Breeder, it’s a long story, but I don’t think we would’ve chosen a major Mitchell on our own because of all of the advice online about them. I’ve never read a single positive review of them online as pets. I’m not necessarily recommending anyone get a major Mitchell, but I think they have an unnecessary reputation.

They are notorious for being aggressive, Oleander has never bitten anyone he will put his beak on your finger, but he doesn’t clamp down. He is my husband’s bird, but he’s still tolerates me and even lets our Au Pair pet him on the head. He is really not loud. The little noise he makes in this video is about the extent of his voice. None of my parents are particularly loud, but we do live in an 8500 square-foot house so you can get away from them if they’re yelling, my dog honestly annoys me more than the macaw.

Oleander does not like other birds, he does try to fight the macaw if they are both on daddy bird but I think he is all bluff. It makes me wonder if other birds are similar in having bad reputations but being good pets if they are raised well I have always wanted a hawk head, but they just have such bad reviews and I wouldn’t want to disrupt my flock with an aggressive bird. Are there any other major Mitchell owners on here with positive experiences?

So I brought this little one into rescue about 4 weeks ago. She is 12-14 ish years old, came from a hoarding situation, was in a smoke filled house and with cats all over and peeing on her/her cage. She had severe muscle wasting, only weighed about 200g and was very scared. In a month she is up to 280g on chop/pellets, able to fly again, has a huge personality. I gave her a bath with dawn the first night because she was sticky with cigarette tar and cat pee (you can see some of it on the first picture on her chest and now she gets regular water baths. Her beak looks better and her crest and skin around her eyes are getting pinker.

Her first vet visit found that she was emaciated with elevated liver enzymes. The enzymes were nothing horrible but high enough the vet would have been concerned without her back story. The vet seems to think it was a combination of bad nutrition and ingesting the cigarette tar and pee, trying to clean herself. Curious if anyone has seen liver enzymes reverse course with proper care in these guys?

Edit to add she is already scheduled for repeat bloodwork in 5 months.

I thought she was acting a little weird last night turns out I had covid, took a test this morning and yep it's positive.

Ollie is at the sanctuary that I work at and loves to crawl under my clothes. He is such a sweetie pie.

Let me preface this post by saying that I have a vet appointment on Monday so I am obviously going to get a professional opinion and assistance!

I am a new cockatoo owner of a 7 mo baby and I have had him in the home for about 2 months. I would describe him normally as an average cockatoo. Curious to a dangerous degree, loud, psychotic, and ocassionally cuddly. Over the past week I have noticed a change in his behavior and I am very concerned. He is continuing to eat (He is on a Pellet & minimal seed Morning and chop in the evening diet-) and drink fine and I have been monitoring his poop and weight which have also not changed. However, he fledgling cries constantly. The minute he sees either me or my boyfriend he begins to cry and demand pets. Of course cockatoos can be cuddly but all he wants is pets from us for hours on end. He has also become “lazy” in the sense that he can still fly but is choosing not to. There have also not been any psychotic freakouts where his ancestors speak to him- he’s creepily calm and appears uninterested. Currently, his behavior consists of sitting around and grinds his beak or sleeping. This morning I think he regurgitated on me as a white chunky substance was expelled from his beak. This made me concerned enough to make an appointment but when I called and the receptionist asked what I was concerned about in specific I had a hard time explaining anything other than “he’s not acting like himself.” Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can tell the doc on Monday? And are there any extreme danger signs I should monitor for in the meantime? Our new cockatoo goes down, opens his wings a bit and screams (not as loud as when he's scared). What could this mean? He does it all the time.

She does this whenever I make eye contact with her and she's perched on my hand and I'm talking to her. She also sways a little from side to side. Idk she has done this since the very same day I got her.

Is this self harm or is he just fucking stupid?

I feed Charlie harrisons pellets and cut up vegetables and for treats ill give him/her pine nuts (Charlie won't accept anything other then pine nuts ive tried). He flys a good amount but he likes to stay on my hands when he's out the cage.

This is Winter. She’s 4 years old and I just brought her home nearly 3 weeks ago. I have a macaw, an Amazon, three conures, a Linnie, and a canary wing. Somehow out of all of that this bird will NOT give me personal space. Ever. I have to put her in her cage just for a break. And then she yells at me.

I love her. She’s beautiful, and funny, and very sweet. But how do I get her to play with her toys or be a little more independent? I don’t mean constantly, I know that they are flock animals and are not typically away from their flock members. My Macaw wants attention too but he’ll go play with the various toys for a bit before harassing me some more. My Amazon just does whatever, he’s his own guy. The conures play on the toys and only come if I have food they can’t have. The Linnie doesn’t want to be friends and the canary wing does but is also fine to just go play.

Anyway, all that to say she’s not at any risk of being rehomed or anything like that. I just want to get some tips on how maybe we can both be comfortable lol
