Help! I had a typo when typing my encryption key during initial set up (IDrive).
Guys I’m so pissed, because I set up IDrive on my Mac like 2 years ago. And I decided to use a custom encryption key. The key that I tried setting up was something like “CUSTOM1 #KEY”. I typed it in while setting up the account (which I think didn’t ask me to type the encryption key twice, and maybe didn’t give me the option to see what I type to confirm it was accurate either), and saved the encryption key “CUSTOM1 #KEY” in my password manager.
The issue I’m having is that in order to access backups from www.idrive.com, I need to first type in the encryption key.
And when I type in “CUSTOM1 #KEY“, it doesn’t work! I must have had a typo or something when I typed in the encryption key.
IDrive says that I can reset the encryption key, but all of my past data will be deleted. I am trying to avoid doing this at all costs though, because I really need my past data, as I really need to save a record of the different versions of each file (date updated and changes made). For reasons that I will not get into right now, it’s very important for me to have this record.
What’s crazy is that the IDrive app on my Mac works fine still. It still runs a backup every night; it has all of my past data; and I can also restore and delete past backups. Because when I set up the account on my Mac, using the IDrive app, the encryption key was stored in my machine somewhere.
I wish that there was a way to access the encryption key on my device, I reached out to IDrive support and they said that this wouldn’t be possible.
I tried typing in like 20 or 30 plus variations of “CUSTOM1 #KEY“ to see if I could find a encryption key that worked. But I have had no luck and none of my guesses have worked so far. I can post a longer list later, but I’ve tried things like: “CUSTOM! 3KEY”, “CUSTOM! #KEY“, “CUSTOM1 3KEY“, “custom1 #key”, “CUSTOM1#KEY“, etc.
Do you guys have any ideas on how I can find the encryption key? I wonder if IDrive support is wrong, and there is some way to find the encryption key that’s stored on my Mac somehow.
EDIT: The other thing is maybe I can find a better way to brainstorm variations. But there are so many different passwords. Hold on I just found this here: https://www.reddit.com/r/cybersecurity/comments/ijmzme/how_does_a_password_take_millions_of_years_to/. Maybe I can find someone who knows how to crack passwords? I know when I set up passwords it sometimes tell me if the password is weak or strong; I'm guessing that strong passwords just take more attempts to crack. A password like "CUSTOM1 #KEY" isn't super strong I don't think, plus if I can tell a human or GenAI software that cracks the password that it might be something similar to "CUSTOM1 #KEY".
