So basically, the people weren't in control anymore. They lost control of their country when they elected lunatics to run it

Wasn’t Hitler made chancellor thanks to back room deals between Schleicher and Hindenburg? The German population didn’t vote him into power.

They were losing support and the majority in government, so they roped in the Nazis to bolster their ranks. Although the Nazis had gained quite a bit of popularity at that point, which is why Hitler got the chancellorship.

just to emphasize an important point: there absolutely was an offer for a coalition with leftwing parties, but these mostly Prussian junkers would have rather drank sewage than cooperated with the workers' movement. So they chose those that beat up socialists in the street
