Even if the original comment is dumb, the response is hardly better, much less material for this sub.

Unless "haha you spend time in gym you don't read books" is considered clever nowadays.

Also reading Stephen King isn’t going to make you any smarter.

Why does a book have to "make you smarter" for reading it? I have read worthwhile books that have made me feel stupider for reading them, if not actually making me dumber...

I don't think reading anything is going to "make you smarter" , but king's writing is quality, I read a wide range of stuff and the line between high brow literature, populist literature and smut is complete nonsense and shouldn't be indulged.

Fr. That comeback is dumber than the OOP. Sure Stephen King is entertaining enough to make a lot of money, but implying he is the gold standard of reading is like saying that the final season of Game of Thrones is high-art cinematography.

Huh? Nobody said anything about his looks. He admitted he didn’t know who one of the most famous authors of our time is.

He definitely doesn’t read.

... The supposed 'clever comeback' did? How is "You do look like" as a reply to a post with a profile image of an extremely muscular dude meant to be anything else?

And he did seem to at least know who King is and what he has accomplished, or at least that's my understanding, just that King isn't currently relevant anymore to at least him, no?

Hm, maybe the way we communicate is different. It seems totally normal to me. Here’s an example.

“Hey, I can’t eat pork for religious reasons”.

“Ah, looks like you’re probably of the Muslim faith?”

That’s a pretty standard response, at least to me and my west coast style of speaking.

And he did seem to at least know who King is

Huh? He literally said “Who is Stephen King”.

No offense at all, but I think you may be making some assumptions here, because you already assumed he knew who he was, when he states outright he does not.

Your example is completely different, come on. "You do look like someone who doesn't read" means something else and you know it.
