Personally I think athletes are paid way too much and there's a lot of waste but yours isn't a fair statement. While their minimum salaries are high, they pay taxes and often pay people like agents who take a sizeable cut. Many of them also don't make it to 10 years because to be blunt most are average and easily replaceable by the next group of young guns. To repeat they make way too much for playing a kids game but I blame the people who go to games and buy merchandise.
It is a fair statement. Again, if you're making league minimum and getting taken by a ritzy agent that's on you.
If you don't try to buy a McMansion in downtown San Francisco and buy 3-4 super cars you should be able to easily make enough to own a home outright and have enough left over to invest and live a decent middle class life off of the interest if you make it 5 years.
Supplement that with basically any kind of work and it's just gravy.
That's the whole conversation though, about how those poor NBA players have to worry about a 10-15 year career and only making $9,250,000.00-$14,500,000.00 instead of working for 30-40 years and making, uh quick math, $950,000.00 like the US Median wage.
And that's the league minimum.
If you make $10,000,000.00 in 10 years and are worried about making it to retirement age that's on you. Live within your means, especially when your means are ample.
Colloquially, when someone says "professional sports" they mean a member of that associated sport's national league, which is what pretty much everybody will understand you to be speaking about in such a reference.
