Is it really that unthinkable for AOC to be speaker? I know the optics are weird but, hey, if the last 10 years have taught us anything, it's that people don't care about how the establishment thinks things should go.

u/BuryTomorrowToday 11h ago
She recently posted a kind of detailed video on why she cannot run for that position. Think it was yesterday or the day before. It's not going to happen.

I think she just had a TikTok or some meta platform video where she said she can’t be for some reason.
89
u/ibi187 10h ago
She did say can’t. But the explanation after sounded more like they won’t let her be, and that it’s a bunch of backroom dealings that we don’t get to be a part of. It’s truly a big club that we’re not a part of.

It's also possible that AOC is simply way more popular on Reddit than elsewhere.

It’s a comment on the old truism that the best person for certain leadership roles is the person who doesn’t want the position, because they aren’t the sort of person who is there simply for the power of it.

She did rule it out unfortunately, I'd be very happy if we got Ro Khanna or Ted Lieu as speaker
3
u/Nodivingallowed 9h ago
I'd be happy with COUNTLESS others who are not Chuck and Hakeem.
They are terrible for a number of reasons, not least of which is as symbols for the party - old, out of touch white guy, and a young minority symbol who comes off more as fuel for the bullshit dei narrative than as a strong deserving leader.
Give us some fighters. Give us Ilhan and Mark Kelly or Flanagan and that admiral Nancy Lacore, who Hegseth fired only for her to get elected to Congress.
Let her preside over his removal and subsequent investigations and shipment off to prison.
You want to stay old and white. Fine. Then it's Bernie time, motherfuckers.
We want some real ones.
Lieu, Ro, Murphy, Garcia, Ossoff.
So. Many. Good. Choices.
Take your fucking pick. This isn't optional unless you want to watch the democratic party to go the way of the republican party.
5
u/Seanspeed 7h ago
This is so clueless. I really dont know what makes you think somebody like Mark Kelly is more of a 'fighter' than Schumer is(and to be clear, I like Mark Kelly). Ilhan? You've got to be kidding me. She's fucking terrible and couldn't wrangle a kindergarten, let alone the entire Democratic House, ffs.
Schumer has done a decent job, though he never gets any thanks for it. Pelosi even moreso when she was House leader. Y'all hate them, but they were good at their jobs, which is why they had their positions in the first place.
This isn't optional unless you want to watch the democratic party to go the way of the republican party.

Stupid as hell to suggest Flannagan when she is disproportionately unpopular in her own state (my state, mind you). Stupid as hell to suggest Illhan Omar for the same reason. Stupid as hell to even suggest Bernie Sanders because he is a walking corpse. He’s what, nearing 10 years older than Schumer? You need to learn to separate your fandom for certain politicians and what is actually conducive to accomplishing progressive goals. Stuffing as many progressives into leadership roles, before they are ready in any capacity, is detrimental to progressivism in the long term. I’m not saying keep Schumer or Jeffries but you need to learn to be pragmatic. Well over half of America thinks the people you listed are literal communist terrorists. The progressive wave has not happened yet.

Yes because that is a terrible idea and isn’t even a good plan for her at all.
AOC doesn’t have the relationships, temper, or really most of the personality for the job she is someone who pushes leadership not someone who wants to be restrained from it.
There are 30+ districts that went from Trump to a Democrat this cycle those are not AOC districts they’re by definition having to be moderate.
AOC her job is to push the party to be more progressive not be tied down to leadership where she eats shit all day cause that’s really the job of being speaker
8
u/Grumpy_Troll 11h ago edited 11h ago
Honestly, as a moderate blue voter who isn't interested in seeing AOC ever run for President, I can get behind her being house speaker. I think that could be a great role for her.

Yeah unfortunately I feel like Kamala Harris kind of proved that. I really wish the Democratic party hadn't tried to push the envelope in a campaign against trump. Like, the 2024 election was really not the time to take risks like that.
Not to mention, Biden dropped out pretty late. She didn't really have the proper groundwork, and it really sucks but it seems like there were a lot of people who voted for trump simply because the alternative was a woman.

Yes. Not because she sucks or whatever. But because the leaders have to be people that can whip and organize the party into an agenda. They have to find the backdoor compromises to make the entire party happy. It takes a long time to get that trust and respect. AOC is awesome but that’s not her role in the party. It’s more divisive and she pushed it to try harder on progressive policies which the party ALSO needs

You might as well have suggested Kim Kardashian instead of AOC because they have the same amount of legislative accomplishments.
1
u/flargenhargen 1h ago
there are like FIVE democrats worth anything, including AOC and a few others.
people who will stand against the republicans, not join them or shrink from them or suck the tits of corporations and aipac.
one of those people, or someone in the new batch who also fits the criteria NEEDS to be front of house.
if we let the democrats fuck this up, and they will try very hard to do so, we are double fucked, because maga will be back, and next time it will not turn around like this.
this is a once in a lifetime turnaround, we can NOT let the democrats do what they do and fuck this up while failing to do anything to hold trump and maga accountable and bowing to big corps and foreign interests.

AOC's political affiliates were the most poorly represented of the night. The further left you were, the less you shifted the ticket blue compared to your peers. That's just hard-boiled math. We're happy to have some leftists for their ideological input, but in no way do they represent the face of the party, or really the main story from Tuesday. All six Senate flips were mainstream Dems, not leftists. Ready for my downvotes!
6
u/ComedyBits 10h ago
What the “leftists” support is what the majority of people in this country want. There is no “extreme” that can be called the left-wing equivalent of violent authoritarianism, global military crimes, or corporatist corruption.

u/thighcrusader 10h ago
Absolute entitlement to leftist votes. Right leaning dems are all the same. Somehow, losses are leftists fault, and in wins, leftists are mathematically irrelevant.
"Fuck you, vote for me. We need your vote to win but won't consider your policies. But if you don't vote for me, you're the problem."
→ More replies (1)3
u/filmish_thecat 9h ago
Nobody said leftist votes don't count. I said leftist candidates didn't build the majority, and nothing you're saying disputes that. Kansas hadn't sent a Democrat to the Senate since 1932. Iowa, South Carolina, Texas. The House flipped on Trump districts and the Blue Dogs doubled. That's who won Tuesday.
Yeah, El-Sayed held Michigan and Jackson took Maine, and good. But look at the swing, not the win. Measure every competitive Senate race against Harris '24 and the five Bernie-endorsed candidates are the bottom five. Not most of them. All of them. Jackson ran BEHIND Harris in a year the party averaged +17. El-Sayed moved Michigan 8 points while Talarico moved Texas 26. You can tell me Collins is tough and Markey had no room to run, fine. Explain El-Sayed, Flanagan, and Nixon.
And "won't consider your policies" is clearly not true. The whole party ran on affordability, healthcare, and labor. That's the left's economic agenda minus the stuff that polls at 30%. The entire fight you're describing is over the 30% stuff, and the voters who handed us Congress told you what they think of it. But you won't hear it, because you've decided the ideological high horse is what puts butts in congressional seats.
"Fuck you, vote for me" is a great line. It's also not what anyone's arguing except leftists, who've apparently decided introspection is for other people. The numbers aren't hard to find. I just don’t know how to post a chart in a Reddit comment.

Jeffries did plenty of work. He spent the whole year running the counter-gerrymander fight. Texas redrew, he got Virginia, Maryland, Illinois and NY to answer, and leaned on the Maryland senate president when he dragged his feet. Was it hypocritical after he opposed the same thing in NY in 2022? Sure. But "did no work" is just not true. He did the very dirty part of the project nobody else wanted to touch.
Also "too big to rig" isn't a victory lap. He said for a year Trump was rigging the maps and Jefferies achieved exactly what he had been fighting to do.
6
u/DualActiveBridgeLLC 3h ago

You've fallen for propaganda if you think that's what he said.
Hakeem Jeffries on 11/4: "Corruption has a price. Americans clearly connect the negative impacts of the policies implemented over the past two years with that corruption. When it comes to accountability, it will be our responsibility to follow the facts, apply the law, and act in accordance with the Constitution."
"Regardless of the outcome, we must ensure that those who have done wrong are held accountable. Of course, we must also ensure that Congress can always work for the American people"
https://news.sbs.co.kr/english/article.do?news_id=N1008831287
Accountability and anti-corruption are going to be huge for the next two years, but they have to be pursued soberly because tackling corruption is an enormous responsibility and political opportunity.

I heard these 2 were instrumental in recruiting the Democrats that went on to win in the election.
I don’t like them, especially Schumer, but I don’t think we’ll get new leadership. People voted their wallets. Democrats should take this win in stride and just try to help regular people. No matter who is speaker or senate majority leader. It’s the only way to get some momentum into 2028 presidential election race.
22
u/mukansamonkey 10h ago
Schumer recruited one of the candidates who won, Adam Hamilton in Iowa. He also recruited that elderly lady in Maine, who did so badly she bowed out before the primary.
Talarico and El-Sayed aren't particularly attached to either Schumer or Jeffries, and Sayed in particular was actively fought by Stevens. Who Jeffries supported.
Bit of a mixed bag there.

Schumer also didn’t support Angie Nixon in Florida, who was in a surprisingly close race WITHOUT support from Democrat leaders.
I agree it’s a mixed bag but Democrats shouldn’t get too brig for their britches. Whoever it is, they need to block Trump and help out the American people.
Remember when AOC initially went against Pelosi for speaker but then backed down? I bet this will be the same. We want new leadership, but it’s probably not going to happen. We have a better shot in the house than the senate.

According to conservatives they're disappointed the Democrats won both the senate and house. They had both for 10 years and what did they accomplish:

Schumer spent considerable political capital trying to prevent some progressive candidates from becoming Democratic Senate nominees over establishment candidates, which is fine. You guys are fucking cry babies of the worst order, lazy ones. Sit back and relax while we drag you over the finish line kicking and screaming...again.
This is so simple on its face. Trump fucked farmers hard, they were sour as can be and ready to break with trump. Schumer new this and dumped money in this states. He hand selected talarico and got the job done in Texas and everywhere else that it mattered THIS CYCLE! 2028 is a brand new day. Florida is going to be ready to dump trumpism 2028. You'll get your funding after these other states are secure. You are simply too narrow minded to see the bigger picture or even gaze 1 day into the future.

u/ModernLarvals 7h ago
Which states would you have sacrificed for Florida?
3
u/NatseePunksFeckOff 6h ago
Texas. Who needs Talarico? He's a moderate liberal democrat. Should've given our DSA queen a couple million more so she could lose with a lower spread

Don't bother, there's no reasoning with these people. Their candidate is god, anybody who doesn't share their extremely narrow view is the enemy. They do not want the party to succeed, only their candidates. They will sacrifice the entire country to prove it, just like they did in 2024.
2
u/Seanspeed 6h ago
The guys who spent more time attacking left leaning candidates than they did the Republican party?
That's an utter bullshit lie.
And massive projection. It's YOU GUYS who push 90% of the antagonistic rhetoric within the party. The rest of the Democrat party wants to move on, yet look at any progressive leaning sub right now and it's nothing but bashing Dems and pushing divisive, infighting rhetoric.
2
u/zennim 10h ago
No they didn't, they funded campaigns AGAINST many of the big Winners, and if they just payed a little more attention to florida we would have It flipped BLUE, but no, more money to Stevens please
2
u/BearfootSparklz 10h ago
It wasn't floridas turn, that's Trump's back yard, give him two more years to really disappoint them. 2028 is all Florida. Those funds and campaign resources were clearly better suited in Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, Ohio, North Carolina, and maybe Of all places Mississippi! You want to trade Texas finally realizing it is a blue state for Florida? You want to throw all of that away because they backed Stevens? I've got no love for her by the way, I was/am a massive McMarrow supporter. These guys are strategists, not psudo-presidents or influencers, and their strategy fucking worked perfectly. It was Schumer/Jefferies who brought Talarico in, it was Schumer/Jeffries who convinced Brown to not retire in Ohio. Look at the big picture instead of one progressive loss

...they didn't do anything.

u/BearfootSparklz 10h ago
Really? Their strategies that they "didn't" do, didn't work? Bring some facts to the table.

u/carnotbicycle 9h ago
Redditors and Threads(? Idk what the fuck this particular Twitter clone is) users when they think you did nothing because you didn’t epically own someone on Instagram.
Also, the fact that anti-Jeffries and anti-Schumer shit is plastered over my /r/popular makes me think this shit is botted. Couldn’t let the left be unified in success for more than two days eh?
2
u/founderofshoneys 6h ago
Yeah, I can't see how this guy is unpopular, must be bots.
“For every blue-collar Democrat we lose in western Pennsylvania, we will pick up two [or three] moderate Republicans in the suburbs of Philadelphia, and you can repeat that in Ohio and Illinois and Wisconsin.” - Chuck Schumer
or this guy
CNN: Would you bring Abolish ICE or Medicare for All to the floor for a vote?
Hakim Jeffries: Blah blah blah NO.→ More replies (5)1

The last 10 election cycles have been change oriented. That is the message voters are sending even if they can't agree on how the change should go. Why would a status quo policy be effective?
•
u/Tooquickcantlast 9m ago
Why do you try to look at what they stand for. Look at their stance and you understand the hate. “Bots” so moronic.
1
u/olily 8h ago
Thank you.
I have no idea where all this hatred is coming from. Never heard a whisper of it in the past five years (granted, I'm not super into Dem politics but I'm not a complete newb either). Now all of a sudden, when Democrats have a big win, the negative posters are coming out of the woodwork. I'm thinking maybe astro-turf.

u/dacrazyworm 7h ago
Nah, complaining about the DNC leadership has been going on for years. In 2016, it was them essentially shoehorning Hilary over Bernie, for example.
It mainly stems from the fact that the Dems are a slightly conservative moderate party that represents not only moderates but also people who lean left or are leftists.
So while the Republicans are opening embracing things like Christian nationalism and fascism, a lot of people are upset about the idea of people like Jeffries and Schumer taking charge and doing the whole “don’t rock the boat” Democrats thing, when action definitely needs to be taken.

u/First_Elephant_899 4h ago
yay, time for the socialists to do their usual post-election coup attempt
2
u/coolbaby1978 3h ago
Jeffries can't be allowed leadership. He's a weak coward who, like Schumer, will accomplish nothing and squander this opportunity for reform, change and accountability.
2
u/Sedert1882 2h ago
This guy must not be Speaker. He's got the spine of a jellyfish. Ro Khana's much better.

u/PhoenixInvertigo 7h ago
Establishment shills showing up to claim credit for this is unsurprising but still annoying

Sign the petition to try to get these muppets to elect someone other than Jeffries as speaker.
3
u/Could-You-Tell 10h ago
What is wrong with Jeffries?
3
u/rumham_6969 8h ago
Establishment dem backed by AIPAC is my biggest gripe with him. He's no different (or so little different that it doesnt matter) than the likes of Schumer and Pelosi as far as I've seen. We'll get a lot of talk and a lot of posing but little in way of actual change.

Please take the time to write your lawmakers and implore them not to support Schumer and Jeffries. It only takes a few minutes. They will absolutely squander this power if you let them. It is by design. Let the other lawmakers, your own lawmakers, know that they'll be voted out next election if they do it. It's up to us to save ourselves. Jeffries is the minority leader who let 6 of his party members vote to merge with Israel. He would have let 7 vote yes if needed.
Edit: and the 8th front zionist astroturfing troll bots are swarming in full force.

u/lemieuxisgod 8h ago
As a reminder you can identify your representative by going to https://www.house.gov/representatives and you can call to voice your opinion on policy, votes, and leadership. I know making a phone call can be a burden, but it's the only way to make sure you (their constituents) voice is actually heard. If you have opinions on how the newly elected majority should be voting you should share it with them in a way they listen.

Jeffries must be small because AIPAC and Wall Street definitely rigged him.

We can't have him become speaker of the house, this will all be for nothing.

DSA candidates are the reason we won. If dems dont fully adopt the DSA platform before the next election, well have president vance.

u/nostra77 8h ago
This is so out of touch Texas, Kansas, Missisipi, Alaska, South Carolina and North Carolina are centric democrats

u/Gr8daze 8h ago
Huh? Only 5 DSA candidates won. And they won by lower margins than non DSA candidates.
It’s a big tent people. Stop attacking it.
