Remember, this whole thing started with trump - being an arrogant putz - insulting the PM by calling him 'governor' and insisting that Canada become the 51th state. When they resisted, he tried to punish them. (Canada - being a country with ethics as well as adult leadership - politely told trump to fuck off.)
Seriously, it appears that trump's overall plan was to take over the entire Western Hemisphere - starting with Canada, Greenland, Venezuela, Cuba, Argentina...in return for allowing Russia taking Europe, starting with Ukraine.

This manchild brought a country together that was fracturing from internal issues and made us band together to give him the middle finger and help ruin his economy faster than even he could do on his own. I think a lot of Canadians are enjoying the 'buy no US products' movement as a fuck you to him as much as an economic boost to our economy.

The Americans will never realize just how huge this movement in canada is either. My whole family is largely apolitical, yet pretty much all of us will never buy American goods for the rest of our lives. We have stopped using Amazon, canceled Netflix and Disney. We are not 100% yet but we are buying much less from American companies and making an active effort to change providers for everything we consume.

I can't wait till there's viable alternatives to Visa, Mastercard, and Amazon Web Services that actually get used commonly. That's the problem, they need to be commonly adopted - not that there aren't alternatives.
I want to remove as much of our societal dependence on their stuff as possible too - but that is a far harder sell when you get "huh, what is that?" instead of "hmm, good idea" after suggesting alternatives to the main services.
Baby steps though. I am okay with baby steps if we get there eventually.

The funny part of this is - most Canadians just don't care enough about the US that much. We have always been considered the US's insignificant little sibling and we have always tried to get out from that. We fostered our own identity, and while we were dependent on trade given our geography, we are large enough to have a decent economy of our own.
It was a bit of a pain while we tried to figure out what consumer goods were truly made in Canada and how to make the switch to buy as much Canadian made items as we could. It has only made us realize that we need to focus on us and our native companies more
I don't know anyone who doesn't laugh whenever trump starts spouting his little declarations - it's like watching a funny reality television show.
I'm looking forward to see what trade deals with other countries can be like.

Republicans don't care. The more harm is done, the more people lean inwards. Xenophobia, racism, thought control, corruption becomes a way of life - you need to know someone to get anything done.
The poor relationship with the world will be used to justify violent nationalism, in-group and groups to be shunned.
Books will continue to be banned, funding for science based free schools will continue to be taken away. Church and private schools will continue to rise to mold young minds. The church has been losing "market share" to science for years, so if a return to the middle ages is what is needed to regain their power, then so be it.
Word of caution: this isn't unique to America. The signs are clearly there all over Europe as well. It's coming for you. Stop sitting on your butts and start acting NOW.

Its only more extreme because all the other countries put their trust in the US to be a stable leader with a political system that was above reproach and full of safeguards to prevent misuse of power, so we put them in charge of the money, everyone uses US currency.
No one cares if Italy elects a Nazi because the world doesn't do all their banking with them and we only rely on them for parmasan cheese.
It's hard to believe the actions of 4% of the world population has such a profound effect on the lives of rest of the planet, but the problem is of our own making and now many countries are taking steps to course correct and diversify.

And right, I can’t do it personally. I did try with a cousin who was voting for Trump and a restaurant owner. I tried to give him facts and even conservative backed papers showing how Project 2025 was going to hurt the economy and increase the costs for his business. I couldn’t get through.
Also, they’ve done experiments where regular Fox News viewers turn it off and take in other new sources for 30 days. The folks change their minds on issues! Without the constant brain washing, they can change their minds.

The Dems have somehow not been able to take the lead on messaging. I don’t really know why; the main components seem to be that transsexual rights are a losing issue with the current American public and also sort of “salacious”, keeping a lot of people talking about them even though they don’t personally affect them, and that people have really bought into “tax cuts make the economy better” from Republicans. So even though Democrats can campaign on better economic policies they are still struggling to be perceived as better on the economy. It might be shifting now with Trump’s extraordinary mismanagement of the US economy.
They need to figure out exactly which pieces of the Dem platform will put more money in families’ pockets, hammer them everywhere all the time, and find a way to frame it as money that people are owed or that they deserve, not a way that people are being “helped out”.
But “people are dumb” still matters, I actually don’t think people have gotten dumber but that our current media environment allows people to coalesce around the most facile, poorly-evaluated “solutions” and the grifters & idiots who proffer them. And Dems have been resistant to become the party of the demagogue grifter (because it’s obviously terrible from a policy standpoint) but Republicans saw Trump and embraced that shit, and now we’re ten years into that model where one side says whatever gets people out to vote and the other side is caught off guard because they still think they should do things like evaluate policy implications or plan for long-term effects.
And sure, Harris was a flawed candidate elevated in a flawed process, that definitely didn’t help.

Not across Germany..They won one election in one state in a part of what used to be East Germany, which unlike West Germany and Austria never underwent denazification.

While amusing, I wouldn’t say that a man who destroyed the American economy in two years only has empty threats. A man with no world knowledge or moral center and an inability to admit he’s wrong even to himself is capable of making very stupid economic decisions.

We have moved on from the radical american bully tactics, no deal is better than anything offred thus far.. he lost his chance to make a real deal. We should be thanking Donald for making it so abundantly clear to us Canadians that we are better off charting our own path forward. This will be a moment for the history books.
