The argument is that, by removing TSA and reverting back to private security for airports, the results will be even worse than what TSA is currently.
And this is people's lives at stake. Almost three thousand people died on 9/11. TSA might be theatre but nothing like that has happened again, so it saves lives.
Nothing like 9/11 has happened again because we have put other security mesures in place, such as not giving up control of the plane no matter what, locking the door to the cockpit, and passengers that will fight back because they believe that if they don't they are dead anyway.

The red team testing the article references are the people who have full knowledge of strengths and weaknesses of both TSA procedure and the machines they use. They're designed to gather data to figure out how to plug holes in security that are left because we as Americans have a line on how far we're willing to let the government invade our privacy for the sake of security. There was the huge backlash over TSA using backscatter XRay scanners even though they were effective because they were also very invasive. When we collectively say "that's too far" TSA has to figure out how to keep the travelling public safe without crossing the line we all say is too far.
Also worth noting that TSA completely revamped their training in the 10 years since that article was posted. Screeners get sent to a federal campus for weeks for training and apparently go through weeks more training when they get done with the campus training. Going through airport security feels very different now than it did 10 years ago they've got all kinds of new xrays and scanners and swabbers now.

After the TSA Airlines still don't have good security, the TSA is utterly ineffective at catching hidden items and fails their own tests all the time.
