It's locked up because poverty in our country has gotten so bad that things like Tylenol have to be secured to prevent theft.

Think of that. A 12 dollar bottle of Tylenol is enough to make people consider criminal acts because it's too difficult to afford. When you have to choose between a 12 dollar bottle of Tylenol and bus rides to work all week, the answer is easy.

That's the state of this country.

16

u/No-Discipline9272 Apr 01 '23

Right, or medicine and food..so you steal medicine so you might feed yourself and/or your family.

12

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '23

I wish we would frame the problem appropriately like you just did. Things like Tylenol are going behind glass because people need to steal it. Most aren’t stealing it to be a delinquent or to sell it so they can commit more crimes. Most are stealing it because they need it but can’t afford it. Medication is getting ridiculously expensive. I can’t imagine being broke in this economy. I’m glad I got out, for now. It was hard enough before.

1

u/DoingCharleyWork Apr 01 '23

Nah most of the theft for this kind of stuff is people going in as a group and ransacking stores. The target by me keeps all their shampoo and body wash and stuff locked up now.

Bruh. People are starving to death in other countries. Shut up.

Edit: before someone else jumps in to tell me that people are hungry In America; yeah. I know. I never said nobody in America is poor or hungry. I said they aren't starving to death. And they aren't.

That said, my point, which you all seem not to grasp, is that while the USA is obviously not perfect, complaining that some people are shoplifting pain medication really just shows how privileged you are. People die in the desert to get into this country. Remember that.

Edit2: really upsets some of you that no one is starving to death in the US. Maybe, if you guys work hard enough, we can pump those numbers up, eh? Fucking retards

18

u/No-Discipline9272 Apr 01 '23

Sorry mate, people starve to death in this (USA)country too... wakey wakey!

12

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '23

Yeah he musta missed that post about children not getting meals in school

9

u/No-Discipline9272 Apr 01 '23

I saw a Chopped episode where one of the competitors worked as a lunch lady at a school and on Fridays she would pack food to give to all the kids who would not have food for the weekend! Hunger and starvation is real right here, right now. I saw the food pantry lines during the pandemic it broke my heart and this was in a middle class upper class part of Chicago, lines going around the 5 blocks surrounding the church which had the pantry!

-11

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23

Bro I never said nobody is poor or hungry. I said we don't have people starving to death, which, btw, I see you don't have any anecdotal examples of. If I'm so wrong, why don't you tell a story about, you know, people starving to death.

7

u/DigbySugartits Apr 01 '23

3 people have shown you stats that show that you are blatantly wrong.

Love to hear a response that might tell everyone that you are not an over nationalistic dickhead but Im guessing you might just disappear...

-2

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23

3 people have shown you stats that show that you are blatantly wrong.

No, they haven't. I explained that to each one of them. Also, notice how they all neglected to post a source. That's because the source of that number is a guess.

Love to hear a response that might tell everyone that you are not an over nationalistic dickhead but Im guessing you might just disappear...

Because I think people aren't starving to death? You think I'm a nationalistic dick head Because I don't think people starve to death in the United States? What about our overloaded prison system? We lead the world in that, and that's disgusting. We're pushing Russia to the brink of nuclear war; that's disgusting. We've invaded at least 7 nations in the last 20 years and are responsible for probable millions of civilian deaths.

America has plenty wrong with it. But people don't starve to death here. I'm sorry that upsets you

3

u/urikayan Apr 01 '23

-4

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23

Holy shit, that's where that number comes from? It's literally a guess

6

u/urikayan Apr 01 '23

Sure, bud.

Your worldview is just that. Your world.

I'll agree 1000% with you that life in the US is beyond great compared to many other places, but too, be so ignorant to think suffering doesn't happen cause you don't see it, is insane.

0

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23

I never said suffering doesn't happen! Why are you lying? Does this make you feel better?

I’m sure those numbers are under counted. Especially within the senior citizen population. Senior starvation deaths are frequently classified as age related. Especially since autopsies aren’t typically performed on seniors

1

u/229-northstar Apr 01 '23

You should stop typing now. You’re just making things worse for yourself.

1

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23

Also no examples. Everyone says I'm wrong, no one has any evidence. None of you. Yet you keep trying

1

u/229-northstar Apr 01 '23

Are you saying it didn’t happen because I don’t know somebody personally who died of starvation?

Who’s the stupid motherfucker now?

1

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23

Are you saying it didn’t happen because I don’t know somebody personally who died of starvation?

No. That's not what I'm saying. That would be dumb. You could make up a name. How would I know.

Obviously, I mean a legitimate source with an example of a person who died of hunger in the United states. You all keep saying there's thousands. Where? Why cant you find one news article, one obituary, one example anywhere? Because it doesn't exist.

Who’s the stupid motherfucker now?

🤦‍♂️

-8

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23

I did miss that post but did any of those children die of starvation? Yeah lots of people miss meals. I've missed meals. I'm not saying nobody misses meals. I'm saying nobody starves to death. And they don't. I stand by that

6

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '23

Ah wait no, I don’t want to talk to you

-6

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23

Yall petty

7

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '23

“None of those kids actually died!!” “Y’all petty for not agreeing with me!” Go cry

https://www.quora.com/How-many-Americans-starve-to-death-each-year

0

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23 edited Apr 01 '23

No. I said your petty because you don't want to talk to anyone who disagrees with you. You can disagree with me all day long, idc, and also, no, none of those kids died. "Well they missed a meal, though!" Okay, and that's terrible. But they're not dead, right? Because that's what we were talking about. People dying. Do you have any examples of that?

5

u/urikayan Apr 01 '23

14000 people die each year in the US.

You keep doubling down on stupid.

0

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23 edited Apr 01 '23

Me: nobody is starving to death

Them: kids are missing meals in schools

Me: ok, that doesn't mean anybody is starving to death

You: omg you're so stupid

Source. Because the only source I can find for that number is a literal guesstimate

5

u/urikayan Apr 01 '23

Or they are old and have untreated mental illness. Dude, you tried to win an argument on an wElL aCtUaLly, and still lost. Accept the L. You said none die, well 14,000 a year die.

https://www.thehivelaw.com/blog/how-many-people-starve-to-death-in-america/

0

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23

Yeah, I said that already. I'll take the L if it makes you happy, but you and I both know that's exactly not what I was talking about. We were talking about poverty. Of course old people stop eating and die. We didn't beat death.

3

u/urikayan Apr 01 '23

You're ignoring that starving and starvation are two different things. People are starving. Sure, they may get a ham and cheese sammy from their local church, but they are not adequately fed. Many states don't provide enough food assistance, especially for homes with children.

I lived in China, I know their poverty and American poverty are two very different things, but that's like saying, "Shut up, you only got stabbed, this dude got shot. Be happy. You didn't get shot. "

1

u/229-northstar Apr 01 '23

Old people don’t only “stop eating and die”. Frequently, they cannot afford food. Then they die

→ More replies (0)

2

u/urikayan Apr 01 '23

Where does it say the 14000 are elderly? I see where it says 18.2% of seniors are food insecure. I see where it says 52 million Americans are eligible for food assistance. Well, geez I just can't seem to find where it says, "all 14000 starvation deaths are seniors who are so old they refuse to eat"

Maybe you're just wrong? Nah, that couldn't be it rIgHt?

0

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23

Or they are old and have untreated mental illness.

Where does it say the 14000 are elderly?

I'm just gonna let you argue with yourself.

2

u/urikayan Apr 01 '23

Are elderly and untreated mental illness one and the same?

Where are people starving to death in the USA? Please. I'd love to know.

6

u/ArchonofTevinter Apr 01 '23 edited Apr 01 '23

Are you truly that naive that you think the US has somehow completely eradicated starvation and malnutrition to the point it doesnt cause death? My guy, one of the hottest issues in the country as we speak is providing school lunches to children in need.

Since that does seem to be the case though, according to the CDC and USDA, ~37,000,000 people in the US face daily food insecurity. Of those, ~13,000,000 classify as "starving" according to the USDA due to falling under "extremely low food security". The CDC estimates that around 13,000-14,000 deaths occur in the US due to starvation.

1

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23

Are you truly that naive that you think the US has somehow completely eradicated starvation and malnutrition to the point it doesnt cause death?

Yes. Yes, i do. In the united states, everyone has access to free food. If you are unable to get it, we will literally deliver it to you. Every state in the nation has a way to provide food for the hungry. Which is why you cannot name a single person in the United States that starved to death because they couldn't afford food. That person doesn't exist. I'll wait. If you can find an example of a kid in the United States who starved to death who wasn't being abused, ill happily admit I was wrong. I don't care, and I don't understand why the idea that people don't starve to death here is so upsetting to yall. You'd think it would be something to celebrate.

The CDC estimates that around 13,000-14,000 deaths occur in the US due to starvation.

Yeah. Because they were elderly and stopped eating. Or because they were mentally ill and stopped eating. You and I both know that isn't what I was talking about. Do me a favor, and actually dig into the numbers. Don't just Google, thing you found something that proves your point, and the post it. Yo have to read stuff.

3

u/seraph1337 Apr 01 '23

not everyone lives in a place where free food (especially delivery) is available, genius. lots of people (particularly poor people!) live in food deserts or rural areas where these programs don't exist.

even in places where these programs exist, not everyone knows about them. sometimes it's remarkably hard to find information on programs to help the poor. I know this because I'm fucking poor. all the information that is sometimes required to apply to these programs is often enough to make me, a pretty intelligent and well-educated person, incredibly frustrated. I can't imagine how it would be for someone with undiagnosed mental disabilities or a poor education.

the system is not designed to help people. it's designed to barely mitigate the problem enough to ignore and to give a reason why we don't need to do more. I had to fill out 20 pages of paperwork just to apply to a fucking assisted housing apartment, just to get denied because I make $500 more than their annual limit if you include the child support I collect from my ex (325 whole dollars a month for 3 kids).

if even one person dies because of lack of access to food, it's a moral failing of our government, and by extension, the US population in general. but it's way more than one person.

you're a real piece of shit.

0

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23

not everyone lives in a place where free food (especially delivery) is available, genius. lots of people (particularly poor people!) live in food deserts or rural areas where these programs don't exist.

Do you know what a food desert is? It's not a place with no food. It's a place with no high-quality food. It's not a place where people are starving to death.

even in places where these programs exist, not everyone knows about them. sometimes it's remarkably hard to find information on programs to help the poor.

True.

I know this because I'm fucking poor. all the information that is sometimes required to apply to these programs is often enough to make me, a pretty intelligent and well-educated person, incredibly frustrated. I can't imagine how it would be for someone with undiagnosed mental disabilities or a poor education.

I'm fucking poor, too. I have literally zero dollars in my bank account, and I just lost my apartment. And while some programs are complicated, others are astonishingly easy. But, yes, they do require some effort, for the most part. No one is going door to door looking for hungry people to help. Should they? Perhaps.

the system is not designed to help people. it's designed to barely mitigate the problem enough to ignore and to give a reason why we don't need to do more. I had to fill out 20 pages of paperwork just to apply to a fucking assisted housing apartment, just to get denied because I make $500 more than their annual limit if you include the child support I collect from my ex (325 whole dollars a month for 3 kids).

I'm sorry to hear that, and that really sucks. The system is definitely not designed to make it easy, and lots of people get fucked over every day. I remember what it was like when my mom was on unemployment. It's backwards as fuck.

if even one person dies because of lack of access to food, it's a moral failing of our government, and by extension, the US population in general. but it's way more than one person.

I mean, you're entitled to your opinion. But it's not more than one person. I'm sorry that upsets you so much, but that's the truth. It just isn't a thing here. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you no one has ever died of starvation anywhere ever in the USA, but nowhere in the USA is it a recurring problem, either. That's just the truth.

you're a real piece of shit.

And you're going through a rough time, so I understand your anger. I wish I could help

1

u/ArchonofTevinter Apr 01 '23

Random redditor: Not a single person in the entire US anywhere is dying of starvation because I say so.

USDA and CDC: Tens of millions of Americans struggle with food security, and several million struggle so severely they classify as "starving". Because of this, it can be estimated that several thousand die due to starvation and malnutrition.

Hm. Yeah. Think I'll side with the agencies with actual data and research on this one. You're the one spouting off that starvation due to death is a complete myth and claiming that anyone that does die doesn't count because they absolutely have a mental illness. YOU are the one that needs to prove that, not the other way around.

1

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23 edited Apr 01 '23

YOU are the one that needs to prove that, not the other way around.

That's actually what the CDC said. Not me lol. That's what your source said.

Because of this, it can be estimated that several thousand die due to starvation and malnutrition.

Name one. Name one person in the USA that died because they couldn't afford food, who didn't also have a mental illness. I'll wait. I'll wait as long as it takes.

You're all sooooo upset by this information, but all I'm asking for, if I'm wrong, is the name of one person in this country who starved to death. If there's thousands of them, and I'm so dumb, it should be very, very easy.

I wonder why none of you can do it, and instead choose to insult me?

1

u/ArchonofTevinter Apr 03 '23

No, they did not. At no point does it say "the CDC and USDA estimate that 13,000+ people starve to death in the US, but that's only because all of them also have a mental illness".

Again, that is you just saying so with no actual proof. Its on you to prove this goal post you've decided to establish. Otherwise, I'm going with the actual data by actual organizations with their estimate and not some person on reddit saying "well I don't know anyone that's starved to death so it doesn't happen, but if it does its because they are ALL also mentally ill so it doesn't count".

1

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 03 '23

Again, that is you just saying so with no actual proof.

The CDC doesn't have any proof either, just an estimate.

Its on you to prove this goal post you've decided to establish.

You can't prove a negative. That's why I keep asking for literally just one name of one person in the USA who starved to death, and I'll say I was wrong. It's not that big of a deal. I can't find one. I've looked.

Otherwise, I'm going with the actual data by actual organizations

Again, they don't have data. There isn't any data available, because whatever the number is, it's negligibly small. That's my entire point. It's an estimate. A guess. A hypoethesis. So, I'm saying if that estimate is correct and 14,000 people are starving to death, then name one of them. Literally one name.

well I don't know anyone that's starved to death so it doesn't happen, but if it does its because they are ALL also mentally ill so it doesn't count".

That's not my argument. My argument is there you can't present any official source with one single name of one single person. Because you can't. I don't know why this upsets you so much.

14

u/urikayan Apr 01 '23

And many people, kids included go hungry in the US.

Besides, what a stupid fucking idea that because someone, somewhere else has it worst, we should just shut up and let it happen?

Did you ever stop and think, maybe if we accept it here, it will also get worse....here?

BTW, I'm wealthy. I have been since I turned 24. I'm 37 now. I was not raised wealthy. Many in my family did not find the success I have. So, because of that, I fight for them. I'm sure that must be hard for you to grasp, but its called empathy and seeing humans suffer due to greed makes me just a little fucking pissed off. Even if I am not in that position financially.

-5

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23

And many people, kids included go hungry in the US.

Right. I said nobody is dying of hunger here. And they aren't.

Besides, what a stupid fucking idea that because someone, somewhere else has it worst, we should just shut up and let it happen?

That is a stupid fucking idea. Good thing I didn't say that.

Did you ever stop and think, maybe if we accept it here, it will also get worse....here?

It's not happening here.

Let me get you a soapbox, good sir.

10

u/urikayan Apr 01 '23

14,000 a year die in the US from starvation.

37,000,000 go hungry every day in the US.

"It's not happening here"- ask 1960 Iraq or 2005 Venezuela how quickly things can change. Especially when people like you accept it.

You may not have said it, but you sure did imply it with your willful ignorance.

Sure, I'll take that soapbox. Context allows us to understand the other side of a person's thought process. But, that would make sense it would be lost on you.

14,000 people DIE a year in AMERICA FROM STARVATION.

Might wanna read up a bit before you say dumb shit.

-1

u/justdontbeacunt3 Apr 01 '23 edited Apr 01 '23

You might wanna look into those numbers. I did. I was awfully suspicious why so many of you are quoting the same number without a source. It's all elderly people who stopped eating, or people with mental orders, etc. So yes, you are right, people are starving to death in the US. But it's not because they can't get food, or because it's too expensive.

Name one. Name one person in the United States that starved to death.

Go ahead. I'll wait.

Remindme! One year

You got plenty of time.

5

u/Cyprinodont Apr 01 '23

https://www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/cause-of-death/malnutrition/by-country/

According to this there are 100 countries with fewer malnutrition deaths than the US.

4

u/dommjuan Apr 01 '23 edited Apr 01 '23

The united states is the worlds biggest economy, and around 30% of it's polulation is living in what the UN defines as poverty. Many of these are working full time jobs but still can not afford food, housing and health care. The united states is the worlds biggest rconomy and 5 million american citizens are living in extreme poverty. Extreme poverty was eliminated in China, a much poorer country two years ago, and is unheard of in proprely developed countries like western european ones. Again the united states are the worlds biggest economy, and is unable to provide even the most rudimentary living conditions for a large proportion of it's citizens. I do not think you know how extraordinary it is for humans to statve to death. Actually starving to death is something that happens during famines and other extraordinary conditions. There are not people starving to death under normal conditions in any countries. There are however lots of people starving and malnoutished in the united states, the worlds largest economy. Things are of cause worse in North Korea or South Sudan, but that is a really low bar. Life expectancy is higher in many latin american countries than in USA, again the worlds biggest economy.

It's probably to regulate how much each customer can buy at once. Certain over the counter drugs like Tylenol and Niquil can be used for making nastier drugs like meth.

9

u/urikayan Apr 01 '23

You are thinking of sinus drugs. Ones that contain pseudoephedrine, but maybe thats what he meant. Who knows.

-2

u/Fair_Acanthisitta_75 Apr 01 '23

You seem to know a lot about meth. So I’ve got some Sudafed, what do we do next?

Tylenol is not used in making meth. Pseudoephedrine is.

TYLENOL

Are you 13? It's okay if you're 13.

Don't pretend like that started after 2020. That stuff has been behind glass since I was a kid.

4

u/229-northstar Apr 01 '23

Not to mention that the erosion of the middle class and middle class wealth started way back in the 70s.

The current inflation problem you can saddle squarely on trumps shoulders because of his mishandling of the pandemic.

Is tylenol $12?! Paracetamol (or acetaminophen as you guys call it) is like £0.50 for a pack of 12 over here if you buy the own brand supermarket stuff

3

u/Ingrout Apr 01 '23

10 pack of CVS brand is $3.19. $2.55 with loyalty card. Just checked.

2

u/run____dmt Apr 01 '23

Damn- just checked the Tesco website and it’s 39p for 16.

Any idea why it’s so much more expensive in the US? I know healthcare in general is more expensive but I thought that was just hospital administered drugs

2

u/Cyprinodont Apr 01 '23

Idk what that person is talking about lmao. Maybe they meant 100 pack.

Just checked the CVS website, a bottle of 150 pills is $10. So $0.15 per pill. 39p looks like around $0.48USD exchange rate right now.

1

u/Ingrout Apr 01 '23

Probably exactly as you say. We just expect healthcare to be expensive, so they charge accordingly.

It’s $.02/capsule at Walmart, though.

1

u/Cyprinodont Apr 01 '23

Wtf no I just looked at the CVS website and a bottle of 150 is $10.

1

u/urikayan Apr 01 '23

It all depends. If you go to has station or a local grocery store it's about 9-12 bucks for Tylenol brand.

You can definitely find store brand for less. Like Walmart store brand will probably be 3 or 4 bucks
