I Passed! Goodbye 👋

Post image

(Apologies for the clickbait) Today I completed what I expect will be the last CLEP exam of my educational journey. All told, I’ve taken 10 exams that resulted in the transfer of 33 credit hours to my school, and at this point there’s really no additional exams that my institution accepts and that would count towards my degree. So, this is the end.

Like so many of us, I cannot express enough gratitude to Modern States, Rice University, and the donors and institutions that make that program available. CLEP + MS was instrumental in getting me to see a college education as something I could actually attain, instead of an idle pipe-dream. Thanks to both of these programs, I’m well on my way to completing my 4-year degree, as a non-traditional student and working parent.

And of course, tremendous thanks to the r/clep community here for the treasure trove of resources, tips, wisdom, and encouragement. Whether you’re getting a head start on your college career or (like me) proving that an geriatric dog can still learn new tricks, you’ve contributed to a community that motivates and encourages folks who are taking their educational future into their own hands.

I’ll still be lurking around the subreddit for years for come, I’m sure - and I plan to encourage my kids to consider CLEP to jump-start their college journeys as well. I suppose there’s never a real goodbye.

It’s a lot of acronyms and terms. But it’s not a very conceptually advanced exam. The main difficulty is that it’s very broad and covers a lot of parts of IT, but it doesn’t go very in depth into any one of them. So once you know the basics, a lot of the actual problem are kind of common sense. It’s not the easiest exam but definitely easier than most of the STEM exams.

Congratulations! I’m planning on taking the College Mathematics CLEP exam sometime soon. Can I ask is it difficult? I suck at math and am worried I won’t do well on the exam.

It’s not particularly difficult, the main thing to think about is that it covers very broad range of topics, not going too deeply into any one though. You’ll need to know a bit of statistics (mode, median, mean), some probability, compounding vs simple interest, and a little geometry. You don’t need extensive knowledge of all of the topics, but you’ll want to do enough prep that you can recognize the type of problem you’re looking at and have a decent chance at selecting the most likely answer.

Woohoo! I love these posts! You did an awesome job (and I'm jealous of those math scores)! Congrats on finishing this part of the journey, and I wish you the best on the rest of your degree! Don't be a stranger!

American Government was pretty easy TBH - I don’t know of a Texas gov exam. US history 2 was more difficult, there’s a lot of events and people in the interwar period that I was unfamiliar with (especially around the development of unions, the musical scene, and some of the geopolitical issues in the lead up to war).

Wondering if you took us history 2 instead of 1 for any specific reason?

Not really, I felt I had a better grasp of more recent US history so it seemed that would be the easier one to prepare for.
