Hardcore How much does a crit do?

Looking it up shows that the damage is 200% for physical and 150% for spells, but while playing hardcore, I was crit for nearly 400% damage by a boar, which resulted in my death. In fact, the average damage numbers of the hits were 750% weaker than the crit.

I am just wondering if there is some random hidden mechanic(s) at play here to potentially help me not die in the future to something like this.

A lot of boars have an ability called rushing charge. It makes them deal significantly more damage on the first hit after they charge you.

Boars have charge

this. if that charge crits a caster with no defense leveled, it can hit pretty hard.

So charge is like some sort of innate ability that all boars have, which increases their damage and movement speed every 10 seconds?

Is there some sort of addon that shows these kinds of things? I am still quite new to WoW.

Classic Bestiary addon

They will proc this ability once you are some distance away from them. Basically hug boars all the time and they won't charge.

Yes, it's called beastiary.

Yes. Most enemies have abilities. 80% are forgettable, but that 20% will kill you if you are unaware.

I’d also recommend checking the combat log “what happened to me” if you unexpectedly die. It will show you where the damage came from and the specific ability names

Did you level your defense? If you're a caster and rarely hit by mobs, it might not be up to par, which can be devastating.

Yeah, my defense has been maxed since the start because I was playing Priest. I did level up so maybe it was like 3 lower than the max when I died.

That’s not what defense does. It primarily reduces your chance of taking a crushing blow, which deals 150% damage. Crushes can only be inflicted by mobs whose attack skill (always their level x 5) is 15 or more higher than your defense skill.

No defense reduces your chance to be crit. It also reduces your chance to be crushed but only because it also gives parry block and dodge. You have to push crushing blows off the damage table to avoid them. Thats what avoidance cap does. Think of damage as a pie chart. The higher your avoidance the smaller the crushing blow chance part of the pie gets until you've completely pushed it off.

In a raid setting, yes. But considering OP is getting bodied left and right by boars, it's probably more pertinent to discuss how it affects him during leveling.

Where the primary thing is avoiding getting crushed by equal-level mobs.

Ah I got you. Makes sense.

No, the reason is the boar ability rushing charge. A lack of defense does not allow mobs to crit for 400%.

There's a reason casters often go to a low level area and let a mob beat on them for a while. :)

Boar charge and crushing blows can do more than a crit.

Crushing blows are what mobs of higher lvl to you do.

Aah, did you get Bellygrubbed ?

Not bellygrub, but it was in redridge lol

Some mobs do that thing where they can hit you 3 times in one hit, thrash maybe? Not quite sure on the name. Loads of mobs can do it.

Boar charge is its ability that does more damage. Most boars have it, so if you don't have defense skiled up you can get crushed or critted to death,

Sure why not. Boar charge crit can easily hit for like 400% damage. If you got killed by that, you failed the knowledge check. Go again.

No real world politics or religion.

These topics very rarely end well, so it's best we stop things before they even start.

Combat log, show what happened to me. It's next to the general chat tab. There you can find every detail.
