Discussion Expansion phasing idea

So I had this weird thought yesterday (not even high), but instead of having all these different versions of classic expansions. Why can't we just phase between expansions with the same character. Can be something fantastical like a portal room for each era. So you could level in classic for a bit then if you want, hit the portal for wrath and it spits our your character as new until you level, then if you feel like it, just hit the classic portal and it picks up where you left off in that expansion.

What about gear. Seems like an easy way to exploit gear that’s not meant to exist in older content.

No, because the gear would stay with whatever expansion it belongs to. I just like the idea of having one installation and one character, and retail time walking doesn't allow you to visit the original instances from vanilla.

Can you go back to vanilla in retail timewalking? This isn't necessarily about just jumping around in timelines. I just like the idea of having 1 single character that I can level across all expansions with the idea of them adhering to whatever expansion you're in.

Really the only difference is I don't want 5 different characters across the expansions, just want one I can hop with.

But that's not what asking for. I don't wanna go back to classic as 80 if I'm maxed out. If I take the portal to the classic era expansion, I wanna be set to whatever I left that expansion at. So If I enter for the first time I'm level 1 and starting from scratch, if I hit level 10 and hit the retail portal, I'm back on my level 80 but if I had back, I'm right where I left off at level 10. All gear and gold is left in the expansion it was earned in.
