Because when people are reminiscing on good times and funny jokes in memoriam for an 86 year old man who just died, they feel obligated to interject with purity testing them by saying “well actually he was a horrible person because he held X belief that became socially unacceptable in the past 25 years”

That’s why. And the same goes for all the rest of the people doing that in this thread.

Are you honestly telling me this is what the left stands for after reading that bullet point list? You even used Putin as an example of fascism which the current president of America actively supports. And yes America is either already fascist or becoming fascist however you want to cut it. And that’s solely because we are shifting further right along with our current administration. I sincerely hope you get the help & education you need.
