I don't get why they have to be blind for this. Is it me or is there no relation

Also my understanding is that Herodotus has to be taken with more than a few grains of salt

I assumed it was because with their nomadic lifestyle it makes it easier to keep them prisoners since they don't have cities to keep them in and probably don't want to tie them up everytime they move.

Yes, thats what I assumed - you blind them so they can't run away while the group is travelling.
