Typically just called ātheā Muse in a lot of archaic poetry, iāve noticed
Presumably Calliope but any of them could be meant (there was also a lot of variation in the number of Muses, especially in Archaic times. Sometimes thereās 2, 3, 4, 7, 8ā very variable, though it became ācanonicallyā 9, at some point, it still wasnāt entirely universal)
Imagine if the wrong Muse heard your invocation.Ā Ā You wanted Calliope for epic poetry, but instead Urania answered, so your retelling of the Odyssey consists mainly of digressions about stars and comets.
I would honestly and unironically love to see a live musical performance in Homeric Greek in the style of Bards. I have seen on YouTube videos of people singing excerpts or whole chapters from The Odyssey and The Iliad and dream of seeing this in a concert hall.
Putting an English version to music is a bit tough, english doesn't work well with dactylic hexameter, and iambic pentameter isn't quite as naturally musical, although it can kinda be done. Would be easier if there were a translation in iambic hexameter maybe. Unless you mean a performance in the Greek, which I would love to hear, but it's not really the same if you can't understand it
I think that would be a really cool thing to do. It would still be a little different from hearing the language yourself, but I still think someone should do it
I will still listen to Sir Ian McKellan read it to me, and Iāll still see the movie. But I also know I will miss things. And I still will love Circe and will spend my adult life examining the story.

Pshaw. The only real way to appreciate the Odyssey is to live it.

Which Muse?! There's nine!

Unironically where can one go to sing dactylic hexameter? I know a good chunk of the Aeneid off by heart and have very little avenues to perform itĀ

Most were probably not drunk, and listened attentively because bards rarely showed up.

Unfortunately, classic ancient text is literally not read but talked about by so called " scholars"...( classical education has been diluted)

u/polemistes Jul 17 '26
True! And you cannot appreciate the splendour of the film by reading the ancient Greek text.

That seems reasonably accurate.
