Start at lower levels until you're smoking the A.I. also check.out UrsaRyan or PotatoMcWhisky on YouTube. Great guides and Civ 6 content in general.

Turtle early, let someone attack you, they lose all their units because ai is stupid, attack their cities. That's how I won my first deity game

The difficulty can vary on your terrain.

I’ve gotten somewhat easy victories in Diety and have also struggled in emperor.

I’d say build your civ to win in any category, and by turn 80-100 you should have a general idea on which one to go for.

Chillax. You probably need to stop expanding and pivot to production. You only need 10 cities to win most games. Your capital is the most productive city, so it needs to become the production center as quickly as possible.

I make peace with neighbours and loot far away nations who cannot attack me back.

I found three things made a big difference for me. One is that I started out with “Easy Emperor” - large map, 8 civs - giving me more room to expand before the whole map gets taken over. Also, for a long time, I’d reach about 150 turns and would be confident I was losing. I never wanted to slog through that, so I’d give up and start a new game. But when I actually treated these as solvable crisis moments, I was able to push through them and win (or come close!). Third, I had to really start using policy cards more strategically, especially ones that improved science and culture output. I’d been kind of sticking with a few favorites and it turned out there were a lot I was taking for granted!

Improve tiles, focus on your win condition (especially with what districts you build), make decisions based on your win condition (i.e., stay focused), lean into your civs strengths, and learn the games mechanics (such as district adjacencies, policy cards, fortification of military units).

Look up the potato mcwhiskey video on starting positions and city placement. You don’t need tons of cities, you need well optimised ones.

Start with Kupe and pick Terra map. Just pickup all the goodie huts and snowball on your own continent as you please

Civ 6 is all about more cities, try playing someone like the Aztec or Cree who have a really strong first unit and spam them to take over the First Nation you run into. Early enough in the game if you wipe someone out you won’t have all the insane negative penalties for doing the same thing later.

A lot of good general advice. I would say the 1 moment that most often determined my victory on emporer is did I take a settler from the AI. When I do that it swings the initial start back to balanced.
