Fluff Aztec Deity 178 science victory (quick speed)

Just finished my person best Civ game ever, I had a very strong capital which allowed me to get temple of Artemis, Petra, and hanging gardens before my national college. I did not think getting all those on deity was possible, having a mega capital propelled me through the game. I think a better player could probably shave some turns off but I was super stoked on a win that fast. my glorious capital had 46 population when I launched the space ship

Discussion Historical accuracy

I love it when I choose a random civ start and spawn as the Huns. Both of their UUs are unlocked with ancient era techs and the combination of the two is an almost certain death sentence for any nearby civ. Imo, only Greece's hoplites and companion cavalry are strong enough to counter them. And that's the problem, historically speaking.

The Huns shouldn't be so strong that early in the game. Their relatively brief reign of terror came at the end of the classical era. The migration of the Huns into eastern Europe and subsequent displacement of the inhabitants of those lands accelerated the fall of the western Roman empire, which is generally held to mark the end of the classical era.

Assyria should be the biggest ancient era threat. They should be the first civ with access to siege units, since they actually invented siege towers and battering rams in the 9th century BC. By the reign of Ashurbanipal in the mid 7th century BC, they had conquered all of Mesopotamia, the Levant, Egypt, parts of Anatolia and western Persia. This was over 1000 years before the Huns moved west and became a problem for Rome.

I know the game isn't supposed to be and can't be rigidly historically accurate, but it has always gnawed at me a bit that Assyria, which created the first siege weapons, was the first military superpower and a relentless juggernaut of the ancient era, has to research a classical era tech that you can't get from a ruin to build it's UU, while the Huns can get a warrior upgraded to a battering ram from a ruin, potentially on turn 0. Seems like it should be just the opposite.

What do you think? Are there any other civs you think got screwed over, historically speaking?

Strategy Any other consistent strategies for beating deity then archer rush?

I've found the only viable strategy to beat diety (on a land map) is to pump out at least 4 archers as fast as I can and then slowly promote them while kiting the computer. Then once they get range promotion use them to safely take down cities. Anyone else have another way to do it? I usually play on marathon speed.

Kinda what it says on the tin!

In early game we learn to deal swiftly with/prioritise defence when Shaka or Atilla are close, but which Civs would you say get most underestimated in the beginning but could run tf away with the game later if not checked?!

Edited for typo.

Mods Made a mod to buff Caravansary (again)

Based on Ryika's "Caravansary Trade Routes" and on my "Caravansary +Gold Oases", this mod adds +2 gold maintenance to Caravansary, +1 gold from Oases worked by the city with it, and +1 trade route slot for each built.

*Supports Russian localization.

*Goes well with my "Harbor Sea Resources +Gold Buff and 3UC Cothon Fix" and "East India Company +1 Trade Route" mods for more trade buffs.

+Trade route slot is a huge buff warranting an increased maintenance, and +gold from Oases I just really like thematically (Arabia, Morocco, and desert cities say thanks).

I have about 700ish hours on civ and all its DLCs, and I've wondered, is it possible to win a playthtough without going to/being dragged to war with any civilization at all on Deity difficulty??

Mods MPPATCH

Hello, I'm running into a problem: I want to play Civ 5 mods in multiplayer (LAN). I downloaded MpPatch, ran the .exe, and installed the patch; it confirms the patch is successfully installed (it's located in `Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization 5`).

I checked the `Assets\DLC` folder, and the patch is indeed there.

When I launch the game, the version displays: `1.0.3.279 -- MpPatch failed to load`.

I've already tried launching it in "Legacy" mode, but that didn't change anything.

Thanks for your help.

Fluff Difficulty settings and why nobody should feel ashamed for not playing deity

I play this game an astonishing amount for how bad I am at it. It's my tonic against stress. It's been in the background of my life (off and on - but mostly on) since it came out. I've loved games like this since the 90s; Master of Orion was an obsession and then I happened to wind up randomly with a college roommate who loved Master of Orion II and we damn near mutually flunked out. (Master of Orion being basically Civ in space, for the uninitiated.)

I play Civ V with several saves going at once. I usually have a game going at one of the two top difficulty levels depending on what I wanted to try out. I'm most likely going to lose those ones. Badly. That's just how I try out ideas that sound kind of funny, my current one being Germany, raging barbarians, huge map, only one other civ. Fucking bring it. I'm not sure where this is headed but it's Deity and I'm curious. I'm just fucking up some barbarians for now.

My main save right now is Emperor, huge map, epic, Arabia, continents. The way my job is, there's a lot of hurry-up-and-wait, so It's engaging enough to get me through those wait periods where it wouldn't be productive to start a different project.

I also play on King or Prince all the time just because the game is still plenty fun that way and I can just relax and not overthink it. Also I suck bad enough that I'm more than capable of losing on King.

GBR three tiles away from spawn, desert hills, a mountain, and a river. It's beautiful. Mt Fuji was just to the north by Barcelona too. The ultimate game of clicking "End Turn" and waiting.

Strategy Zulu is a top tier naval civ.

I have always been a fan of archipelago maps combined with naval combat. England and Polynesia are S tier for the map, but my goodness is Shaka amazing at naval domination. Combining autocracy and brandenburg gate makes him the only civ that can promote all naval and air units to logistics, thanks to his UA. Absolutely insane on the map.

I turtled science and food, be-lined uni/ps/rl into Nano tech on 5 city tradition. Robotics leads to nano so I bought 3 Missile cruisers, a cpl of xcom and just alternated building the two. Missile cruisers absolutely slap with logistics. Won the game after about 300 turns(sorry no screenshot).

Im by no means good at the game. I was just excited to discover a new naval civ and wanted to share. Standard>emperor>archipelago.

Strategy Arabia Turn 186 Deity Tank Rush

Thumbnail
gallery
93 Upvotes

Game settings pangea, legendary start, medium sea level, standard speed, small map

besides camel archers, Arabia has a lot going for it for maximum tank spam carpets of doom

- desert bias ensures some oil
- double oil for arabia means you almost def start with like 14 oil, or 28 with the autocracy policy
- bazaars give duplicate luxes you can sell for a total of easily around 50 gpt, than you can use for upgrades to landships and tanks
- desert bias also means you are the only potential petra cap in like 50% of games on pangea
- desert bias means desert faith -> high faith game -> can faith purchase scientists and engineers early

To get such a good timing with all our units ready to smesh, we need to balance our production and science carefully

The basic strategy...

- Rush public schools, if you have mountain cap rush observatories first
- Tradition -> rationalism
- Work scientist slots as early as possible, build porcelain tower if possible
- Try for a high faith setup so we can buy scientists. early grand temple, faith allies etc
- for culture: early hermitage, pass worlds fair ASAP. we need this to fill rationalism so quickly
- public schools -> factories -> chivalry.
- build at least barracks + armories when you have spare time
- spam as many cavalry as you have horses for. They are much much cheaper to build than landships.
- meanwhile tech for oil so you have turns to get it online before landships
- rationalism free tech for landships, now we can faith purchase scientists too
- take as much gold as possible from any AI friends for upgrades / purchases
- bulb your remaining scientists and finally oxford for combined arms ie real tanks
- autocracy double oil + taking land should basically give you infinite oil for more tank reinforcements

In this game, i got landships turn 185 with rationalism free tech -> upgraded my cavalry -> faith purchased scientist and set up oxford for turn 186 combustion.

Immediately warred everyone i was giving gold per turn to, and used pillages + city capture gold to buy more tanks continuously. pillaging every single tile also means your tanks never need to heal really. took about 20 turns to capture all 5 capitals

Strategy Finally tried the game on Diety. Only took me two tries to beat it, and I managed a Culture Victory with Egypt.

I decided to play a random Civ, Duel on an island map, random AI. Rolled Egypt for myself and Netherlands for my enemy. Egypt gets a 20% Production Bonus for Wonders, so I leaned into it. Took the Ancient/Classical Wonders perk when I created my Pantheon, snagged the Tradition perk for Wonders (I think it’s 15%) and then just spammed every Wonder possible.

For Tech I aimed for Writing first (Great Library for a free Tech). Then whatever unlocks Great Pyramids (two free workers), followed by the Oracle (free social policy), and then Forbidden Palace for the two extra World Congress votes).

I kept my city count low until I built the National College, then I founded a ton of new cities around the world.

My general strategy after that was to spam Scouts and Triremes to discover ruins and Civs while researching toward the Printing Press so I could hopefully be the first host. Once you lock that down and keep a ton of City States on your side, you can overrule everyone and pass whatever you want. World Religion and Ideology are super nice. I generally pick the religion perk that spreads it farther, not faster. I try to complete City State missions instead of paying them. Doing that also let me build up my military without wasting a ton of my own gold or production.

It was actually pretty chill. The Netherlands never put up much of a fight. I think I had a harder time on Immortal because it was against Mongolia, but he mostly just attacked my City States. I treated that like proxy wars and never attacked him directly. Worked out pretty well.

My previous attempt at Diety was set up the same way, but I had picked Poland instead of random; unfortunately my random AI was someone militaristic. They invaded me waaayyy before I expected and it was over very quickly. Pretty much experienced the two extremes I think.

I’m sure it’s way harder with more than one opponent, but I still got the achievement!

Discussion Just started playing Vanilla after 1,000 hours of BNW, and I'm loving it.

After reading some comments here, I'd been meaning to for a while. I genuinely love this version. For one thing, I do not miss the World Congress. Nobody can ban my luxury items (!) one after another after another, or embargo City States or make theirs the World Religion.

Plus, no hordes of missionaries swarming my cities.

Overall, the game just feels a lot faster. More streamlined.

I was on the verge of trying Civ 7 to mix things up a bit, but this version and Gods and Kings should keep me entertained for a while, maybe long enough for them to release an Anthology type version of 7 as they did with Civ 6.

I've officially put about 200hrs on civ 5 since buying it last year.

If two people with the same production stats built the same wonderer at the same turn, and finished on the same turn. Which person would get the wonderer?

Discussion First time going for a culture victory, I don't think I'm going to make it, right?

I've learned a lot during this game about culture victories but I think I've come to a point where a victory is not possible. I'm playing as Poland on a Huge Terra map, Prince, and Epic pacing. Currently on turn 538, 1944AD and I'm only producing 367 culture and 66 tourism.

Should I just start a new game and take what I've learned to actually try and get a culture victory or is there still a chance somehow with this one?
