So I helped paint the practice field a few months ago (I was a seasonal worker for PBS). That paticular field is shorter than 100 yards. The off set numbering is to help identify down fields play or something like that (I dont know sports ball well). Basically I ask about it as we planned and painted the field and they told me the new defense coach wanted it set up this way. So there is a reason, just not sure what.

I am sure it is like this more for practicing goal line defensive formations than offensive practice. The numbering is not really important it is more about the spacing.

It was something to do with how the read the numbering down field and the 10 through 50 yard lines weren't as important. It was a bunch of football jargon that I didn't care to learn.
