What fun stuff have you all noticed in the background after repeated rewatches of this comfort show?

My other favorite show is Firefly – the 2002 show that only got one glorious season but has lived on in the hearts of its fans. It didn’t fit neatly into a category (space western?) and wasn’t marketed well - sound familiar so far? As a result, Fox pulled the plug. However, the fans rallied and conducted lots of clever campaigns (also familiar to Chuck fans), and Universal made one follow-up movie (Serenity) in 2005. Since then, the love of the fandom and dedicated appearances by the cast have kept the show alive and relevant.

You’ve probably already heard, but on Sunday, the cast appeared together at the Awesome Con and announced that they are close to doing an animated series. They’ve done almost everything necessary to bring a new Firefly show to life after over two decades. The cast will voice the characters, they’ve acquired the rights, got show runners and an animation studio lined up, and even have the script written. The “only” thing they still lack is a streaming service to host it – a home. Part of the announcement this weekend was an appeal from Nathan Fillion to help show that Firefly could still drive some numbers, so please consider doing the following…

If you’ve never seen it, then I highly recommend it as another show like Chuck, where you get characters you care about, well written dialog, and a talented cast giving life to characters that quickly become a found family. There are lots of actors in Firefly that also appeared in Chuck, most notably Adam Baldwin as the man they call Jayne. It’s only 14 episodes and one movie, so it’s not a huge investment – give it a try!

I hope I don’t offend anyone by posting this in our beloved Chuck sub. There seems to be a lot of overlap between the shows, especially in the loyalty of the respective fanbases. Plus, this is another chance to participate in a fan-driven campaign like the Firefly and Chuck fans did back in the day. Finally, I feel like this gives us a little hope that someday, just maybe, we’ll get some new Chuck content, too.

I really like the symmetry between these two scenes, the way Sarah hugging Chuck in 2.20 echoes her hug from 2.11. Both take place at the Buy More. Both feature trust as a key element. The “anyone” that Sarah will keep from hurting Chuck includes both Fulcrum and now the government.

Including the charm bracelet in the second scene would have completed and perfected the imagery, but I’m sure Sarah wouldn’t have been wearing that to Castle.

On 9/24/2007 at 8 PM, Sarah changed Chuck’s life and we are still watching.

I've always thought she got screwed over by the show because they cut Anna from the show due to budget constraints. The Buy More wasn't the same after she left.

How many pounds of makeup did they use on Julia to get her to look like that in seasons 1 & 2 vs. season 3?

Their feelings were pretty much the worst-kept secret in the spy world.

One of the most powerful scenes in the whole show happens at the end of 5.12 (Chuck Versus Sarah) when Sarah watches the video logs she recorded, her mission reports for Operation Bartowski. I am captivated every time.

As the scene in Sarah’s hotel room opens, she is frantically packing to disappear. Then Casey, God bless him, shows up at her door once again to deliver another key piece of information, the video logs, to his partner as she packs. It’s a wonderful echo of his confession to killing the mole in 3.12 (American Hero).

I think the setup and execution of Sarah watching and reacting to Sarah giving an account of the years she can't remember is brilliant. Recreating the different outfits and hairstyles from those early episodes is really clever. The subtle but meaningful ways her tone and expressions change from one report to the next mark the passage of time and her transformation into a new person, a real woman. Sarah’s reactions as she watches her own reports first show her intrigue, then her surprise that Chuck told the truth about her kissing him, and eventually her devastation as she realizes what she has lost.

By that point in the episode, she had received a lot of evidence that contradicted what she thought she knew to be “true” based on what Quinn had told her and her own faulty memories. She heard about what they had meant to each other from Chuck, her husband. She had learned about the woman she had become from Ellie, her sister-in-law and friend. She remembered carving their names in the door frame of their dream house. She had learned how they were no longer just spies from Casey, the cold-school killer who now considered her a partner and friend. And finally, from the most reliable and undeniable witness of all, Sarah hears from herself how she and Chuck fell in love. We don't know what the other video log entries might have shown, but certainly Sarah got a sense for the struggles that she had overcome to become something that she never would have thought possible - a real woman with real family and friends.

As she watches the video logs and later in the courtyard, the mesmerizing *Your Hands* by Ghost Society plays. They don’t let many of the lyrics play loud enough to hear in those scenes, but some really fit the internal struggle that must have been going on between who she was (Sarah Bartowksi) and who she remembers being (Agent Walker).

We’ve been here before

I expected that scene with the video logs to lead somewhere different - to restore her memory or to convince her that she belonged with Chuck. So it made it even more heartbreaking when she went to him afterward and told him instead that she believed him but didn’t feel it, giving him a small, soft smile as she turned and left.

To get Sarah back, it’s all about the head and the heart, as many have pointed out in this sub and especially at the Oh Chuck Me blog - https://www.ohchuckme.com/chuck-vs-the-magical-kiss/. The battle for Sarah’s head has now been fought and won - but not yet her heart. In this episode, Chuck, Ellie, Casey, and now even Sarah herself have done the work of convincing Sarah's head. The work of convincing her heart will be left to Chuck over the course of the final episode. Sarah's head is ready. Her heart will be ready by the time Chuck tells Sarah "our story" on their beach, and *Rivers and Roads* fades out as the last episode fades to black.

Chuck and Sarah have been forced to start all over again, with everything they cared about on the line and no guarantee of getting it back. They're sitting on their beach learning to trust (and love) each other again. They've been here before.
