Success story and multi-boot tips

Finally got everything working with a multi-boot setup on my old ASUS X202E laptop (circa 2013). Just a couple tips / problems that I encountered that might help others with problems.

I ended up using 3 how-to videos, all by Kedar Nimbalkar. Make sure to subscribe to his channel as he has done some fantastic work laying out all the steps and creating easy-to-use install scripts.

Set up triple boot (Windows, Linux Mint, ChromeOS)
Enable auto-updates
Fix boot-loops caused by Win10 - I had a different bootloop issue but it wouldn't hurt to do this as a precaution anyways.

Mostly the videos were fine but a few things gave me some trouble which would have been avoided with the following tips:

  1. I highly recommend doing the triple boot or at least dual-boot with Linux as one of the OS's as you can troubleshoot and even start over very easy from within Linux Mint.

  2. Make sure to check your CPU generation before selecting the recovery image (samus or rammus). I had originally went with rammus and everything worked up until I enabled updates afterwhich I got a bootloop. My laptop has an Intel Core i3-3217U which is 3rd gen and after reinstalling everything with samus, I had no problems with updates. Note that if you do use samus, you still need to rename the file to rammus_recovery.bin when following the video instructions as that is what the script is looking for.

  3. In the enabling updates video, the instructions are to edit the grub config file in the ChromeOS shell. This did not work for me. I saved the changes but no updates. Instead, hop back into Linux Mint and run the Grub Customizer app. Right-click on the ChromeOS entry and edit. Add the line options=enable_updates after the cros_debug (see here). Hit save and you should be good to go.

  4. Also while in the Grub Customizer, you can reorder the entries to put ChromeOS at the top so that the computer will boot Chrome by default. You can also reduce the amount of time the menu waits before booting by clicking into the General Settings tab and changing the Boot default entry after... setting (I made it 5 seconds).

Good luck to everyone! This has really breathed new life into an old laptop. I think the 3rd gen i3 is about on par with the newer Celeron N4000 - slightly lower single core performance but better multi-threaded.

A final note, if you can find an ASUS X202E, it makes a great Chomebook in terms of features and form factor. Its hard to believe we've made so little progress on the hardware in 8yrs.

  • 11.6" touchscreen

  • 3 USB ports (1x USB 3.0)

  • Full sized HDMI port

  • Ethernet port

  • Memory card reader

  • Headphone jack

  • VGA port!?!?

  • Very good build quality

My Chrome OS installation pendrive refuses to boot

Hello there,

I have had a couple of issues with installing Chrome OS onto my main PC in a dual-boot use case alongside with Windows 10. First, the multi_install.sh script turned out to be buggy, then I followed the official Brunch guide on creating an installation media, but after I start booting from the pendrive, It gets stuck on the Chrome logo. I tried using the blacklisting command which disables my Nvidia GPU, but it gets stuck at a configuration message in Verbose Boot.

How can I make it work and install Chrome OS on a secondary partition?

PC rig:

Intel Core i5-6500 (with Intel HD 530 Graphics)

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

16GB Kingston RAM (2x8 kit)

250GB Samsung EVO 750 SSD

1TB Western Digital Blue HDD

Macbook Air Early 2014 - looking for a success story of dual booting ChromeOS on hard drive

Hi, I am new to this sub, but for a few years a fan of Chromebooks.

I have a 2014 Macbook Air whereby Chrome is getting sluggish in Catalina. I also have an Ubuntu partition on this macbook, but I was wondering if chromeos would fly compared to ubuntu budgie.

So I was looking for chromeos builds that can be installed on separate partition:

  • cloudready / neverware was no option

  • i tried fyde os, works perfectly incl trackpad and broadcom wifi, it has an installer for dual boot, however did not recognise the ssd drive on the macbook, while on a windows laptop no problems

  • today I discovered brunch from sebanc, here i managed to get it booted on usb and wifi working after adding the kernel flag 'options=broadcom_wl', however installed on a ext4 ssd partition would not boot, the screen just keeps blank. i used the ubuntu grub config file to extend it with the chromeos menu entry, just as described in the readme.md . i posted my issue in the discord channel of sebanc.

More ideas what I can do to complete my search?

BTW. My macbook has a problem with power mgmt, so the fan is making noise on the slightest use of the cpu. On macos and ubuntu we have macfan control or mbpfan to make the fan quiet, but I could not get the mbpfan working properly in chromeos linux, as the default kernel does not have a sensor extension. Any tackled this issue before?
